Iowaboy
Well the drum came off easily but the entire area inside is soaked with brake fluid. So I'm going to remove the shoes and try a kit on the wheel cylinders. Do I have to remove the wheel cylinder to hone it out? Can I do it in place? To remove the shoes do I remove the adjustment bolts at the bottom of each shoe ( the ones that have opposing arrows on them)? It looks like these bolts go through to behind the backing plate and serve to hold the steering arm. The drum is in very nice shape, there are no scratches and no lip to indicate wear. The front shoe has about 1/4 inch of pad and the rear shoe has about 1/8 inch of material. Can I just clean the brake fluid from the surface of the drum with Brake Kleen or something similar? Los_Control
You might consider putting a stainless steel sleeve in them. But to answer your question, when I was a kid working in the shop, we left them in and honed them that way. Only time we removed them was when we were replacing with new because were to pitted to hone.
Merle Coggins
There are clips that retain the shoes onto the eccentric Major Adjustment pins. If the brake fluid got into the brake lining material you will need to replace the shoes.
