Clutch pedal adjusting collar question

I have a 1936 1/2 ton pickup with three speed on floor. Attempting to understand clutch pedal freeplay adjustment. One question I have -does the adjusting collar have a keyway that positions it in one spot or does clamping pressure secure it to the shaft ? My master maintenance manual does not indicate a keyway. I wont be able to get underneath it and look until the weekend. Does screwing in the front adjusting bolt and screwing out the rear bolt decrease pedal freeplay? Right now I have about 3 inches of freeplay, shifting fine, starts off fine. Previous owner replaced clutch about 10000 miles ago.
