MoPar's Syracuse Nationals

This weekend I was able to coordinate a visit to my wife's family in New York's Finger Lakes region with a trip to the Syracuse Nationals.  So.....many....cars....thousands of cars cover the New York State Fairgrounds on each of three days - restorations, hot rods, customs.  I took as many photos as a fully charged iPhone would allow, and I will share those most likely of interest to the Forum members, starting with stock MoPars.  (the Plymouth drop top was stunning!)

There were several nice MoPar Hot rods - The Suede Suburban and Hemi Plymouth 'coupe escaped the dreaded belly-button motor swap, and I believe the Plymouth Sedan and chopped P15 did as well.

Lots of modified trucks, which while very well done, often seemed to get "Brand X' power.  These are all MoPar - if the owner is with his vehicle, I usually thank him for keeping it "all in the family".  The white D100 has a slant six, the Town Panel later B/RB power, the brown Dodge features a Durango frame swap (and can be your for $40K) and the green Dodge a 5.7 Hemi.

They have a "Show within a Show" for what some call 'Old Skool 'rods, others (often derisively) 'Rat Rods'. While workmanship is often not a priority, creativity usually is, and I for one enjoy viewing this subset of our hobby as "rolling folk art".  Rat's are often look barely operable, but the well patina'ed Fargo is a real driver - modern aftermarket chassis with 5.7 Hemi power.  The unpainted Dodge truck with '60 Plymouth fins and a slant six was last year's winner of the Backyard Build-Off:  the rules, simply put, are that the car must be documented home made for less than $5000, with no professional help.  Four or five cars enter each year, with  the winner chosen by spectator vote over the three days of the Nats.  The guy put the leftover roof from the '60 Fury on his entry for this year, but he had to widen the '52  Chevy 8 inches to accept it!

Well, I managed to coordinate another trip to see my wife's family in CNY with the Syracuse Nationals - I'm going as a spectator (the '41 isn't up to the task yet); will any forum members be there?

We will be spectating at the various hotel parking lots around town in the evening.  What part of Syracuse are you staying in?  Maybe l can do a drive by.  When are you arriving? (pm me with details if you refer them not on the open forum)  There are a couple of local cruise in where many of the cars show up.  Thursday evening have one on Taft Rod near the airport, and one in Sylvan beach at the east end of Onieda lake, both will have 350+ vehicles.

Glad to see them staying MoPar powered.  Those frame swaps always seem to end up looking like, well... frame swaps.

I have been to the Syracuse Nationals about a dozen times as it is only about 10 miles from our house. Normally I show my '51 Cambridge but not this year. My sister picked Nationals weekend to get married so I guess I will be doing the hotel parking lot tour :(  If you plan on going, Friday is the best day. The cars will all be there and the spectator crowd is smaller. Saturday will be a zoo as there will be about 50,000 spectators on top of the 8,000+ cars. Sunday is really not worth going. Most folks leave for home on Sunday morning.

there are so many different classification and interpretations of said classes it gets very confusing.  There  is also a very distinct difference in a hard luck example compared to the survivor, but ratters will always be ratters...for myself, when I hit the car corral at the bi-annual swap meet, I head straight to the back row alongside the perimeter fence as this is where the project cars get displayed...I will flay by 400 finished cars just to get a glimpse of these babies...they stir the imagination and get creative juices in my mind flowing..

I finally got some time (and enough bandwidth on my dicey home internet connection) to upload some MoPar  photos from the 2018 Syracuse Nationals. The weather at the NTS Fairgrounds cooperated during my Saturday visit, and there were many interesting examples of our favorite vehicles that this years event.  The first group is of stock restored flathead powered Mope's, and I want to give a special shout out to the gentleman who owns the beautiful Job Rated truck.  As I was speaking to him he saw a young boy take a picture of his truck and start to walk away - the proud owner got up and went after the boy, asking him if he'd like a picture of himself in the truck.  Well, the answer was Yes! and he boy was all smiles and his dad was very appreciative.   That's one way to get the young-ins interested!!!

Okay, saved the controversial subject matter for last - some are "traditional", some are "rats", but all are drivers with good metal work if not good (or any) paint (even the Pilot House roadster), and some showing a great deal of creativity.
