Drain the oil and put your finger in the drain hole and feel for a layer of sludge.  If there is a layer remove the pan and clean it out.  I would also remove the side valve covers and clean that area of sludge too.

when cleaning the pan, do not forget to clean the screen of the floating oil pickup.......don't forget you may also have to clean the sludge from the filter receptacle also...usually when folks start on a detergent based diet one should up their filter change to be a bit frequent as it is going to start moving the contaminants about with the oil as it circulates...

When you buy the detergent oil,buy at least  3 new oil filters.

Take a drive and get the engine warmed up all the way with the oil nice and hot and circulating good and the drain it,drain the filter housing, clean the filter housing, and install a new filter.

Add the detergent oil and then start it up and sit in it and watch your oil pressure gauge. If there was a lot of sludge in your engine the oil pressure will start to drop as it breaks loose and clogs the filter. When the oil pressure drops down tto 10 psi or so at idle, drain the oil repeat the process above,

IF the oil pressure doesn't drop after 15-20 minutes of idling at normal temps, chances are you don't have much sludge. Go ahead and drive it normally, but keep a eye on the oil pressure gauge. It will tell you when you need to do another flush and filter change. If the oil pressure doesn't drop, don't worry about it. Keep driving the car until it does,or until it is time for your next scheduled oil change.

Everybody has their own ideas on what oil to use,but IMHO you just can't beat Mobile 15-40W Turbo Diesel oil in old vehicles
