28 Chrysler 25" Engine tear down and rebuild

After 6 month at the machinist we have some progress....:unsure:

Cleaned up well,  bored 0.060" over.

Next is the bearings, all 13 of them, mains and rods, at $180 per bearing, there goes my budget rebuild....:(

So off to a bloke 3 hours away to pour all the bearings.

If it can be done to Furd model a's and t's, sure do not see why not.

Finding the bearings with the correct dimensions may be the issue??

Yes, I mentioned this to the machinist and his concern was finding ones that will work. The two end main caps are very wide.

 

Has any one done this to an early Chrysler engine before?

Maok...........I've probably suggested this before but have you checked with the Chrysler Restorers Club whether any members have experience with using slipper bearings?..............I'm a member of the NSW based club and can give you some phone numbers if thats any help...........$2340 is a LOT just for bearings...........lol.................andyd

Please keep up with progress on your build.  I recently purchased a 29 Chrysler 65 roadster project.  With it I got 2 engines.  1-65 series and one 75 series engine. the 75 series has the head off and has been bored .030.  The rods with new pistons and rings attached are all bagged and ready to install.  I plan on pulling the pan to  confirm the mains are done.  I will probably finish the rebuild and sell the engine as I plan on using a later 265 engine.   In any case I'm very interested in you progress.

Yeah mate it is a lot. You should have seen my face when I did the grade 4 math.

The problem is finding some on who can do it and has done it to an early Chrysler engine bearings. I have sent out a few messages to various vintage car clubs but no responses so far.

Its a very slow process unfortunately. The bearings will take another 3 months or so and then I probably wont have an opportunity to do the engine swap until later this year. But yes, I will update this thread.

The later 265 engine does not mount at the front like the early 65 or the 75 engines. If the 75 engine is all done then that would be a very good swap into your 65 series.

Maok.............I've forgotten where you are.........have you spoken to any of the Chrysler Restorers Club?.........their Pre 1930 Technical Officer is David Vassallo, 02 9632 1414, I'd also suggest Les Sonter on 02 9728 1168 who whilst is a 1931-40 Tech officer has been playing with mopars for at least 40yrs...........send me a pm as I'd like to phone you...............Andy Douglas

Maok.........good to speak yesterday..........I posted on the Ozrodders forum if anyone knew of babbit to slipper specialists and a guy has mentioned Orger Engines in Melbourne, www.orgerengines.com.au specifically that they do new conrods for vintage engines and sure enough under their "Classic Rods" page they show pics of some conrods about 7-8" or more long with slipper bearings, might be worth giving them a call tho' it doesn't help with the mains.............andyd

Hello from new subscriber!  I am in Utah, USA and have the enjoyable task of working on the family classic Chrysler.  I believe it is US model 60, a four door sedan with a 6 cylinder engine, that has been in my wife's family for more than 50 years..  The car was driven perhaps 5 or 6 years ago, before leaving the family farm barn, and coming to its new home in our garage.  Since then we have replaced the carburetor and rebuilt the radiator.  

 

Sometime before it became ours, someone attempted to repair or replace the water pump, and somehow the radiator fan was lost.

We have a four bolt water pump that seems to fit, now we just need to find the appropriate fan!  Does anyone have a suggestion as to where we could find an original or replacement fan?

 

Would it be helpful if I posted additional photos, of the motor and fan?

WoW! Love the colour. Is it a series 60 or 62? If its a 60 then it would be a 1926/27 model.

We would love to see more pics.

 

Regarding the fan, this bloke maybe able to help - Jay Astheimer   astheimer@ptd.net   610-863-6955

He apparently has lots of pre'30 Chrysler parts.

Maok, has Don Coatney been helping to paint the engine block?.............lol..........looks like the same colour Don used for his DeSoto 25" block instal in his P15 a few yrs ago.........andyd

it was the closest off the shelf rattle can I found. The engine that came out had red (which was probably applied insitu, there is over spray on the rear engine mount) under this colour. I have no idea what the original '28 engine was.
