bambamshere
Hello just wondering if it is possible to put a bigger carburetor on a 251 engine. I would probably have to put a bigger exhaust manifold on it. Just wondering thats all. It has a flathead 6 in it. If that matters.
knuckleharley
Sure thing. You could put a 1,000 CFM Predator race carb on it if you want. That is almost certainly not what you want, though. You need to ask yourself what else,if anything you plan to do to the engine. If all you will be doing is running dual exhausts, the original carb will be fine. If you are putting on a high compression head and a hot cam,a stock single barrel carb won't do the job. You gain nothing from increasing the fuel and air delivery to your engine if your engine can't use the additional fuel and air.
Andydodge
A good alternative would be something like Carter BBD or Stromberg WW, these are both 2 barrel carbys and 2:1 adaptors used to be a common piece at parts shops, both these type of carbys were factory installed on engines from 250-350 cubes of various brands up to the mid 60's at least and are fairly simple carbys without all the extra smog gear that arrived in the late 60's...........that's what I'd try.........also if you have the stock exhaust manifold and don't want to change it then even with a full 2" pipe and a low restriction or "turbo" style muffler you should notice an improvement in varoom..........regards, andyd
40plyrod
Holley 94's are pretty easy to find and work well also, but like Andydodge say you'll need an adapter.
