Wiper Questions Electric

Stuff I can't find. For the 2 speed electric, is it the switch that should have different resistance readings for the high/lo positions to control the speed? If so do you know about what this should be. It's the '49 Chrysler.

The wiper motor is the Autolite EWJ 4001. Was this motor used in other Mopar models/years? Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth are 'suggested' but not always correct regarding the electric. And I have seen that an Autolite EWJ 4007 as being a replacement. Is there a cross reference to part numbers available. I can find nothing about the 4007, not even a picture to compare mounting brackets or control arms. It would be nice if it were possible to look for more than one version of a motor. Autolite rebuild is available, for a nice fee. I did open up, clean out the hard 1949 grease and regrease, but it's still not working to my satisfaction. Opening further to check internal electrics doesn't seem useful as there are no parts available. Looks like Chrysler didn't offer vacuum. Nor do 12V replacements include Chrysler. Any other options from your wise conversions appreciated. Thanks.

I believe Newport engineering offers a "new" electric wiper for mopar. They had two options for my 40 depending on whether it originally came with electric or vacuum wipers. It was also a little spendy though, but a "bolt in" with a new 12 volt motor.

As mentioned, 12V conversions are listed for Dodge/Plymouth, but not Chrysler. (yet the standard motor indicates Dodge. Plymouth, Chrysler, DeSoto fit.) I am waiting for a reply. Also needed is the 6-12 convertor, but no price listed. Anybody buy that?

edit: there is no picture of the 12V or the mounts/arms.

Upper line 1949 -52 Dodge DeSoto and Chrysler use the same wiper 2 speed motor.

They are a very reliable wiper system.

Dodge, is there an Autolite P/N for those years mentioned? Still trying to determine if the switch itself is what controls the speed, or does the switch just direct voltage to different resistances located on the motor. For those who may have the 2 speed electric, do the wipers run "slow". Chrysler reigns different, there is no 12V replacement for the 49. For models that may have had vacuum, the mounting must be different,

Gosh, a mess as to which motor may have been used in specific models. Pictures of the EWH4001 clearly indicate it will not fit my 49 Chrysler.  (It's a horizontal mount motor) Piecing together 60 year old data is tough.

EWJ-4001 is the correct wiper motor for your 1949 Chrysler.

It fits all 1949-52 Dodge DeSoto and Chrysler Cars except the cheap line Dodge cars with vacuum wipers.

Converts take a different part # wiper motor, and a schematic of it....

Great clues, now up to 2 out of 3. Confident my 4001 motor is the original. Would have to see a 4007 to compare. And speed is controlled at the motor. I love you guys and your secret stash of data. Guess it's coming out for another complete bench test.  Fast should be faster than slow. A little luck wouldn't hurt.

EWJ 4007A is for 1952 Chrysler and Desoto .... DeSoto "8" cars only.

I don't know what's different.

Fix what you have or replace with same part#.

Thanks, 4007 "looks" identical. Wonder if the bracket fits. Always consider what the options may be when looking for parts. Gosh, fiddling the best I can with limited wisdom and skill to achieve proper operation. A snail could outrun blade speed. Maybe 49 you needed to grease the blades! Ha. Test will try to see if I'm losing voltage from the switch to the motor. Used working replacements are elusive, it's a Chrysler. Rebuild $$$ are not in the budget, yet. The jalopy always has a new challenging project.

I suspect the 2 speed motors were not a lot different more than the mounting and the arms or motion that they produced.  As far as the switches some may have been different because the stem that sticks through the dash for the knob to mount to may have been a different length.  I've got my Mopar Parts book which goes up to 1954  in front of me so I will try and add part numbers for reference.  I also have 2 Autolite books that I will try and relate.

Switches

1940 - 48 Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler  all used Mopar Switch #898571. (these should be electric 2 speed)  The circuit breaker is part #898572

1949 Dodge used switch #1253105.  1949 DeSoto and Chrysler used Switch # 1244604  I don't have any information on the circuit breakers for these.

1950 Dodge used Switch #1339722.  The 1950 DeSoto and Chrysler used switch # 1339721

1951 Plymouth used switch #1370099

1951 and 1952 Dodge (except D42C) used switch # 1370229 where D42C used #1370139

1951 and 1952 DeSoto and Chrysler used Switch #1369985.

Motors

1941-48 electric wiper motors were #974467 for Dodge DeSoto and Chrysler.

1949 - 52 Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler (with 22" cable) took motor #1239453

1951 - 52 Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler (with 32" cable) took motor #1436660

I tried to leave out the vacuum motors 


Autolite

Now in my 1947 Autolite book, Autolite did sell some switches but none listed for Mopars.

Motors were as follows 1939 Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler Motor EW-4001 and Motor EW-4101

1940 Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler Motor EWB-4001.

1941 Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler Motor EWD-4001

1942, 1946-47 (keep in mind this is a 1947 book)  Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler Motor EWH-4001

 

My 1955 Autolite Book Adds the following (again no mopar switches)

1946-49 (Early 49) Dodge DeSoto and Chrysler used Motor EWH-4001.  

1949 - 50 Chrysler (C45, C46 C47), DeSoto (S13, S14) and Dodge (D28, D30) used motor EWJ-4001 except (EWJ-4003 was used on Convertible Coupes and Special Club Coupe)

1951 Chrysler (C51, C52, C53, C54 C55) DeSoto (S15) and Dodge (D42C Coronet))used motor EWJ-4001 or EWJ-4003 but no real distinction as to which was used when.  1951 Dodge D41, D42S Meadowlark) used motor EWR-4001  

I might try and scan these pages as it gets kind of complicates to describe.

 

I suspect the 4001 is the motor and the letter designation id the configuration of the mount or gears on the motor.

Guys: Found this discussion to be enlightening, as I have ne of those EWJ 4001 motors that came in a box of mopar parts that I bought mainly to get some window cranks and other stuff. The motor looks good, and has the mount and arms with it, and about 2 feet of the cable, and then it is snipped with no switch. If anyone is in any way interested in this motor, I'd sell it cheap. Let me know and I can give measurements abut mount, arm lengths, and I can possibly test it too, but am just about to leave for 3 month vacation in Florida, so wouldn't be able to consummate anything till I return about mid April. Ron, thanks for the motor #'s. I have in storage a box of old 46-50? Mopar parts shared with me to sell from a local hotrodder.

There is one complete wiper motor with mount but he forgot which car it came from as he parted several old Mopars.

When I get back to my storage I'll grab it, test it and post here if working if I can now know what it fits!
