Difference Bwtween the "in-block" and "on-block" rear main seal

Hi all,

I have a question.  I have a block that has both the machined groove behind the rear main bearing for the rear main seal AND the threading into the side of the block for the type that uses the steel plate which the seals sit in and bolt to the block.

In the past, I have only seen on the Chrysler-Desoto blocks the machined into the block type.

Can anyone tell me anything about the differences or why there are differences?

Thanks, JD.
