While very unusual in it's severity we do daily site backups to provide a method of recovery when it does happen. Unfortunately the recovery from backup usually results in loss of data that was processed during the day after the backup was run. (The database used is typically rock solid, in use by thousands of sites worldwide) Specifically we had a large number of users and search engine bots hitting the server at the same time causing it to run out of both physical and swap memory. Bad news it caused a crash, good news it is it means the site is continuing to grow! We have a plan ready if it becomes a more common issue.
