I'd never give up the oil bath air cleaner as it gives the car some of its personality and makes it different from modern era cars. I'd also never change over to a 12 volt negative ground system for the same reason. You can't really see the horse hair very well . After 60 or 70 years a guy could wonder how well it is holding up and if there is any dirt build up around the edges that hasn't been washed clean . My cycle came with a foam filter, lasted 9 years, and then I replaced the foam filter with a foam filter I cut from a couch cushion, that was still good for 8 more year when I sold the bike.... The main reason I have a paper element filter on the D24 is that it did not have an air filter at all when we got it, and I already had a period aftermarket paper element filter on hand. Haven't even bothered to look for an oil bath filter for the car. The shows we take it to don't care if the car has an original air filter or not. As Don notes, there has already been quite a bit of discussion regarding which is more efficient, but I don't remember the arguments for or against, and will defer to an appropriate search before I stick my foot in my mouth..... JohnTeee Posted January 7, 2015 Report Share Posted January 7, 2015 I've still got my original Oil Bath Filter, in pretty good shape. Cleaned up and modified a spare filter that was in kind of sad shape. Here's my results and the air filter cartridge that I used. Be sure your filter is tall enough. Otherwise the bottom edge of the top will suck down to the base and block airflow. Of course, you could always go up higher removing the sides of the top.
