Old Engine, New Transmission

Hello Guys

I have been a member for a while, but not posted before (that I remember!)

I have a 1950 Pilothouse.  The engine ran nicely when I bought the truck a few years ago, but I want to get it to a better driving truck so I can use it daily if I choose to.  I am thinking of keeping the flathead, but would like to put a NP2500 transmission behind it and possibly change the rear end, but 1 step at a time.  Do you think this will work?  Will it be possible to find a bellhousing for this combination or will I need special adaptor plates etc.

I am not a mechanic by any means and after searching on this site, I have not been able to find any information that will help me determine how best to proceed.  Any advice that anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks

Grizjohn

Hi Dan

I think it is also now known as an NV2500. It is a 5 speed pulled from an 87 Dakota.  I understand they are a good transmission and would like to try it.  Do you know of a good source that I can into for adaptor kits?  I have the engine and bellhousing still from the Dakota as well as the complete drive train from the 50, so if I can use as much of that a possible, it would be great, but don't know where to start to get it mated together.

Thanks

Grizjohn

Would it be possible to find another belhousing to the era of your truck and drill holes to make the bolt pattern correct? Just a thought.

Once you remove the stock bell housing, you lose your clutch/brake pedal mounts, so that creates another fabrication headache. I would look at the T5 swap, there is already a kit and many members with great success including myself.

Thanks guys.  I will look at your suggestions and see what I can come up with.

Appreciate the help.

The AX15 and NV3550 are both good 5-speeds that were available in a variety of vehicles. It would be really interesting to see if this swap is feasible. The Jeep/Dodge AX15 5-speed, the Jeep NV3550 5-speed and the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154 5-speed all share the same case to bellhousing bolt pattern.

Here is a link to some more info on the AX15 NV3550:

Advance adapters has some good information on these transmissions. See page 50 of the NV manual. It's a large PDF file.

And this guy at Quality engineered components claims he can fit one of these to a flat six, but I'm not very clear on the details.

Some questions,

For the 1 ton truck?

Do you plan to haul loads?

Did not notice anyone asking.

Scott.

Scott, adapting the bell to the block is straight forward as the photos on my website show. The block adapter mounts any LA type bell housing, or one-piece trans, and there are several options for the flywheel. The same block adapter also mounts the A-904/A-500 TF.

I would be happy to answer any questions that you are unclear about.

As mentioned, this is NOT a simple weekend swap since you generally lose attachment points for other stuff like the brake petal and rear mounts. Plan ahead!!
