Raceandoval
Is it possible to tell if you're in the #1 firing position with the distributor removed? I'm working on a flathead 6 out of a 1949 Chrysler Windsor 250 cu. with head removed. Trying to pull the oil pump.
Jim Yergin
With head removed I would think it would be when the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley lines up with the timing pointer and the inlet and exhaust valves in the #1 cylinder are closed. Dave72dt
According to the pic, you're not. Cyl # 1 and # 6 need to be up the way 3 and 4 are in the pic. As you rotate the engine to bring them up, you want the exhaust valve on # 6 to be closing as the piston comes up close to the top. bthat will put # 1 on compression as it comes to the top. Don Coatney
To remove the oil pump simply un-bolt it and remove it. Engine can be in any position.
