jboymechanic
What is the target secondary winding resistance for a stock coil on vehicle mentioned in the title? The service manual does not list this specification.
Plymouthy Adams
depends on the primary of the coil as this relates to the output of the secondary...however a guideline that should help you is this.. on the modern 12 volt coils which is the same used with the 6 volt less a resistor you have the following: Prestolite coil 1.6 to 1.79 Primary and 9,400 to 11700 secondary (measurements in ohms) Essex coil is 1.41 to 1.62 Primary and 8000 to 10,200 secondary make measurement in ambient temps range 70 - 80 degrees Edited July 30, 2013 by Plymouthy Adams
jboymechanic
Thanks for the info PA. I have no spark and the coil appears to be original or at least very old and the hold down clamp is actually spot welded to the coil. Any way, I measured 1.4 ohm primary and 6,400 ohm secondary and I thought that the secondary seemed pretty low. I have a new coil and it measures 1.4 ohm primary and 9,800 secondary, but I thought I'd be sure that the old one was shot before I destroy it to harvest its hold down clamp.
