My Favorite Old Truck.....

I thought I'd share a simple build that has been one of my favorites for awhile.

I took a parts truck in 2009 and decided to make it into a BBQ.

The truck is its 3 year and is a proven cooker, but has never really been shown here.

Its not a show stopper but a work horse in keeping the party going and the laughs plenty. :)

Here its as a new arrival in 2001......note the 53 bed and fenders. Its a 48 cab and chasis.

Just the cab and doghouse were left in 2009.

Next, I cut a 12g piece of sheet metal that formed the body of the "pit". It lines up with the fender holes already present. Then tacked in some angle iron to hold the grille.

So now it needed a stand, since I sold the frame (modified it and sold it...lol). I welded up a tube support frame, put prop tires up and threw the picnic table behind it and called it done for 2010. And oh yes.....the door logo.

So in 2011.....we got a frame together and repaint it with actual black paint. The process of moving the cab and doghouse to the frame was tricky cuz we didnt plan on breaking it down all the way....cost us the door logo in the way of big divot.

This year we scuffed it down...fixed the divot....repainted...and built a serving area. I tried to make it look like somewhat like a truck bed....even bolted some old 48 fenders on it. The "new version still needs some wood trim on the bed and paint, but is real close to being "finished" for the 2013 event.

So that's where we're at now.....I like the drink bucket in the back, made a hole in the table top and a pedistal below to hold the weight. Welded in new hood props, and found a set of tires at the yard. We're waiting on the new logo...I have the final design sans color.

Of course Plymouth didn'have 48-53 PH type trucks, we do however have a few friends with Plymouth trucks.....so the name stays. :)

Look like a nice project but my guess is you will eat up the profits. Also a bit unclear on what transmission you used and the rear end looks a bit boxy. I also suggest you replace the cracked windshield to pass inspection. The use of tube steak is chinsy. I can think of a prime replacement that would work much better. You could add a spit and polish off a whole hog. I do assume you installed a bun warmer in the cab. With these few refinments this may pass the muster. I am sure others will add there condiments.

good to see more pics of the B1BQ!  I've seen random partials, but now I've got the whole deal.

So do you tow/trsailer it to places or is it just at your place?

Your duaghter looks SO happy to be modeling in some of the pics..I can hear it now...."daaaAAAaaad, do I HAVE to?"

@Don

Nice.....I'm sure you couldn't type that out fast enough. lol

@1952B3b23

Actually its pretty light considering. I push it around by myself no problem.

@ggdad1951

We talked about taking it a further this next year and maybe renting it out if there is interest. I'd have to find the

grille chrome, fix the glass and do some interior work to make it a bit more impressive. But for right now, its happy as stay at home family BBQ.....lol.

  • 1 year later...

Thought I'd put the update picture for 2014 of the B1BQ......

I might change the fender color....but really, its a BBQ....its suspose to stand out as a little different right? lol.

Its missing the steering colum, which makes it very difficult to turn corners cuz you have to grab the front wheels to make it turn. So we'll be adding that in very soon. The fact it does have the front seat and eventually the steering wheel makes me think it will get a motor of somekind (electric). Also I saved and old window gasket from one of the parts trucks that can be recycled to the BBQ. I also now have enough parts to make a bed for it from a 1948 truck. Not sure I should just yet, unless I can make it as cool as the wood bed....lol.

Its all for fun.... ^_^

Dang, every time I open my i-pad I start to itch. Can't wait now to get back to my home computer which doesn't have a screen saver and I can kill those darn ticks.
