Don Coatney
Follow the link for a "as it looks today" photo. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl When I worked in Cleveland I stayed just one block away from where your photo was taken. Merle Coggins
That's definitely a Dodge Route Van right up front. And it looks like a Chrysler to the left of the light post. Other than that I'm not as good as others picking out the car models. Merle
Young Ed
In front of the Chrysler looks like a 42 plymouth with a 46-48 behind it. And to its left a Buick? convertible.
old-idaho-iron
you have the 42 Plymouth by the light post, behind it you have the Chrysler coupe, and behind it you have what looks like a 40 or 41 Chrysler 3 window, and behind the Chevy cabover towards the center, looks like the front of a 41 dodge, and the Dodge delivery truck towards the bottom. could be a Dodge coupe next to the bus, not sure. the sedan following the trolley towards the bus also kinda looks mopar too. that's about all my eyes can pick out for the mopar cars. really neat pic thanks for sharing
TodFitch
I believe I would not have liked sharing the streets with the trolleys. Anybody had any experience sharing the right of way with them?? I would imagine they have the right of way in any situation. If you are in San Francisco you can find out for yourself. There is a surface trolley line along the Embarcadero and up Market Street. I generally avoid driving on Market, not because of the trolleys but because you can't turn left and no matter which way I am traveling it seems I'll need to make a left turn to get where I want to go. Now that I think about it, once you are out into "the Sunset" district I think some of those other SF trolley lines, like the "N" Judah line, are in the middle of the street. So maybe there are other areas of SF where you can share the right of way with them. The trolley lines run by VTA in the "South Bay" and a lot the other SF trolley lines generally have separate right of way so you only deal with them at intersections. greg g
I enlarged and marked all the ones that looked mopar to me and came up with the 12 marked by the yellow splotch. Looks like 49 is the newest ford and cadillac vert. Anybody notie the neat COE Coke truck in the foreground?
BobT-47P15
I think there is another P15 coupe on that street going off to the left..... sitting at the curb behind a Packard. A light color. There are also two woody wagons......not Mopars.......one at the curb down the left street, one a ways back in the line of traffic on the right street. Looks like a 40 Ford. The Plymouth on the lower left, behind the 50 Chevy, may have one of those bug screens on the grille as the bars are not distinct. Or, maybe, a winterfront as I see people wearing top coats......probably cold weather. Edited March 28, 2012 by BobT-47P15
fatFreddie
Looks like early post war Euclid Ave. Euclid does not have an intersection like that. The building are too small for downtown Cleveland in the 1940's. The bus colors are NOT what CTS used in the 40's, and the trolley cars are also the wrong style for Cleveland...I think this may be in Cincinnati. Don Coatney
Thank god this aint the history channel. I believe it is the intersection of Euclid and East 9th Street. Just a few blocks from the Superior Avenue fire department.
fatFreddie
I believe it is the intersection of Euclid and East 9th Street. Just a few blocks from the Superior Avenue fire department. The key element in the PIC is the pie shaped intersection and building with the CAMELS billboard on it. Now Euclid Ave has only one pie shaped intersection that is at Huron and Euclid, but the building is wrong. That is the Halle building and has been there since the early 20's ( remember the Drew Carrey Show..that is the building he worked at). Now there is a similar intersection at 9th and Prospect, but once again those buildings have been there since the 20's and are still there (Winking Lizard, 811 Huron Road East Cleveland, OH 44115.... Great place to eat and has a real lizard to greet you... Google map it to see the building) Now the pie building has CROSLEY on it which was based in Cincinnati. Don, I will be in Cleveland on April 5 at the Lizard starting at noon. Come on up and I will buy you lunch and a beer and educate you on Cleveland landmarks along with auto mechanics. See you there...just ask for the NEW Inc. party...they will escort you to the room. Edited March 30, 2012 by fatFreddie add
greg g
Right click on the original picture. Its properties line identifies it thusly (csudigitalhumanities.org/exhibits/archive/fullsize/euclid_ave1) where csu is Cleveland State University. If you have definative information that it is otherwise, perhaps your information, argument, energy would be better spent directed toward the archivist there, lest their efforts be deemed inacurate. I myself do not have an advanced degree in Ohio geography or a intimate knowledge urban landmarkology. So rather than argue with the source, I merely passed along the information and the image as a bit of mopar based entertainment. But most folks know you can't believe everything you read on the internets. So if you are going to be in the nieghborhood, perhaps you should treck on over to CSU after lunch and submit your correction. The location while interesting in a historical sense was merely the background for the mix of MoPaR vehicles in the traffic shot. If you know better, good for you, and many thanks for the correction. You may be correct. But it appears on google maps that there is a pie shaped intersection at East 9th st and Euclid. Looks like East 9th is on the right in Gregs posted picture and Euclid is on the left. Sorry but I will not be able to be in Cleveland on the 5th. What is NEW INC? greg g
Down in the lower left I believe the intersecting street is marked as w 14th st. There is a w 14th st in Cincinnati, but it has no acute angle intersections. The W 14th in Cleveland does meet with Euclid but today the instersection bears little resemblence to the one in the picture. Can't comment on urban change in either city over the last 60 years. Don Coatney
Looks way too flat to be a Cincinnati street. Cincy is full of hills in the downtown area.
*SIR_ELY*
Maybe a pic of NYC street, almost seems like this intersection... http://www.bing.com/maps/?FORM=Z9LH4#JnE9LlclMmIxNCUyYnN0cmVldCUyYmFuZCUyYmh1ZHNvbiUyYnN0cmVldCUyYm55JTdlc3N0LjAlN2VwZy4xJmJiPTQwLjc0MzEwMTk3NDI1ODUlN2UtNzMuOTk4Njk3MTUyNTIxNCU3ZTQwLjczNjM3MTEyNTA4MzQlN2UtNzQuMDA5Mjg2NTEzNzEyMg== Considered the meatpacking district in downtown manhattan, new yorkdurst finitely a lot of movement during that time period and that picture would be very fitting to the area..... (second row, center) http://cowellhubbard.com/the-story/ That looks like a match to me! If you study the second building towards the rear in the pie it has the same pointed white things on the roof. Too much of a coincidence I think. Cool pictures by the way. Darren
greg g
Seems to be irrefutable evidence, as the next intersection is 14th street. http://flickeflu.com/set/72157626274511806 http://binged.it/H531If Looks like the architecture has changed a bit.... Now where was that bar in Cincinatti???
