clay diggs Posted February 10, 2011 Report Share Posted February 10, 2011 Are these nuts really lock nuts? If they are, mine don't have any lock left in them. I can't find any new ones locally. VPW doesn't have any and they don't know if they are lock nuts or not. They sell rod bolts, but no nuts with them. Any idea where I can find new ones if they are really lock nuts? Some use a rod cap with a relief under the nut that requires a special lock washer to fill the void in order to torque the nut. Others just use a special nut that is torqued to secure it. If you require the special lock washers they are not available. I made mine by putting the correct ID washers on a bolt with a nut and tightened them down flat then putting the bolt in a drill and using a file while rotating the whole assembly to get the correct diameter it fit the relief. Frank Elder Posted February 10, 2011 Report Share Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) A castellated nut is to be used in conjunction with a cotter pin and threaded bolt that has a hole in it. They are not "lock nuts" as far as I can tell if a cotter pin is used to keep the proper torque. clay diggs Posted February 10, 2011 Author Report Share Posted February 10, 2011 I forgot to mention the motor I was working on, sorry. It has the castellated nuts without lock washers.
