Vacuum gauge question

Recommended Posts

Last night, I took Shel's advice and went out and checked my timing after it got dark outside. I was able to see my timing marks using the 12 volt timing light. Right now, the TDC mark is about 3/4 of an inch to the left of the pointer (as you're looking at the front of the engine). I assume this is advanced? With the timing set there, the vacuum gauge reads about 19 inches, well inside the normal range. However, the engine does stumble on acceleration. Vacuum drops to 15 inches once I get to 1500 RPMs.

I replaced the wire inside the distributor with one that matched the diameter of the original. I also discovered that my points were gapped considerably wider than .020. I regapped the points, installed the new wire and started the engine. Problem persists. Next, I am going to attach a vacuum to the advance mechanism and see if it's moving. If that's not the problem then I think I should move to the carburetor. What do you guys think?

Book finally arrived. 411 pages long. I have not started reading it yet. Of interest this is the third book published by members of this forum.
