Jim Saraceno Posted February 25, 2007 Report Share Posted February 25, 2007 I'm getting ready to install the oil pan on my rebuild engine and I noticed several things. First are 4 spots that look like they had a piece welded to the inside of the pan. Two on each side, one (of each side) being close to the pair of dimples near the front of the pan. The other thing I noticed is that the insert looks like it has been beat down. It's been a while since I looked at the oil pan of the old engine, but I thought I remembered it being straight. I looked at Don's pictures and see his insert is bent down, but his is the big block. Are the pans basically the same? As usual, I should have taken more pictures. Anyone have any pictures or ideas? jd52cranbrook Posted February 27, 2007 Report Share Posted February 27, 2007 I have had several differnt pans on my 218. All were differnt inside. Some had plates inside, some had the tube for the dip stick go all the way down inside. These motors were for industrial use also, and had much larger pans. But all had the weld spots on the sides. blueskies Posted February 27, 2007 Report Share Posted February 27, 2007 Here's the only pic I have of my oil plan, '50 218, taken just after removing it from the tired old engine. It's sorta hard to tell from the pic, but mine has two pans spot welded to the inside, one at the end with a turned down lip, and one in the middle. JIPJOBXX Posted February 27, 2007 Report Share Posted February 27, 2007 In my repair manual it shows that bent peice of sheet metal straight up on from the bottom of the pan. My manual ranges from D-19 to D-24's. Looks like someone moves hammered it down to make more room for the oil pickup screen. Jon Do you have a repair manual? PatS.... Posted February 28, 2007 Report Share Posted February 28, 2007 This is the inside of the industrial engine oil pan. It is front sump if it looks odd. Oh, and it's a big block, too. I see that the dimples that I see probably held a shelf that is no longer there. I guess I just need to take the pan off the old engine and pick the best of the two to put on the rebuild engine.
