Doh! Fueling around leaves thief hosed

Submitted by Morris Malakoff on Tuesday, December 29th, 03:43pm

Talk about a “doh!” moment (or two or three).

A 19-year-old Tacoma man was stalled out along Hwy 167 just north of 180th Street in Renton around lunchtime Monday. He thought he might be out of gas. But that was the least of his problems.

While he was sitting at the side of the road, an employee of City Transfer was driving by and recognized the truck as one stolen earlier that morning from the yard at his place of work. He called police.

As he hung up, the possible gasless thief, Jesse Rodriguez, called 911 for assistance. He told police he was an employee of City Transfer and carried the ruse a step farther, putting on a company vest he found in the truck.

But the city employee who witnessed the theft about 5:30 a.m. was able to identify Rodriguez.

Further investigation revealed the truck had plenty of fuel. Seems Rodriguez tanked up with unleaded. It was a diesel engine.

One heck of a feat given that the place a diesel nozzle goes to fuel the truck is larger than a standard gasoline nozzle.

Troopers released the truck back to its rightful owner---complete with a tankful of unleaded gas.

As for Rodriguez, he will have plenty of time to contemplate proper fueling techniques while he sits in the King County Jail, booked for investigation of auto theft.

Remember the old days when a kid (like me) would run out, ask you what you wanted, then wash the windows and check the oil? Seems like a long time ago.

We gave out free road maps, put on windshield wipers.

Then few stations had diesel. How far we've come.

Happy New Year all - can you believe 2010?
