Normspeed
Well, I knew there was a little lubrication fitting on the back of the Mopar speedometer heads, but I just did not get a round tuit. Couple months ago the unit stopped working. Yesterday I installed a new cable. The old one was broken right at the transmission. Got it all routed and connected to the head, went underneath and the cable would not spin. Checked further and the speedo head is frozen solid. So, until the day that I get up the ambition to pull my dashboard for a rewire, no speedometer for me, except my little GPS. It's more accurate anyhow I guess. Anyone know any tips for freeing up a stuck speedometer without removing it from the car first? I went ahead and oiled the little wick, and followed up with a shot of lubricating spray where the cable fits in.
james curl
Clamp a short piece of the cable in your battery powered drill and insert it into the speedometer and try to turn it both ways at the slowest speed. It should free up after a short time. Mine on my 55 chevy pick up did after it froze up and broke the cable.
Normspeed
Thanks James, glad I kept the old cable.
40phil41
That's exactly what I did with my '41 and it now works beautifully. Although I did remove the speedometer head assembly and worked on it on the bench. Phil
