Ignition Timing

When adjusting ignition timing on a 218 using a timing light, is the vacuum line going to the vacuum advance left connected or is the line removed and plugged? Does the specification in the shop manual for timing at 0 degrees or 2 degrees BTDC include the advance from the vacuum advance at idle?

On some later model engines, the vacuum is disconnected and plugged when adjusting timing.

Thanks.

These cars use ported vacuum developed within the carburetor for the vacuum signal. It should not be sending a signal at idle speeds, leaving it connected is not a problem.

You can also use a vacuum gauge hooked to the intake manifold (the vacuum wiper line is a handy spot on earlier Plymouths) The timing is adjusted to obtain the greatest vacuum reading at idle speed.
