REPHRASE THE ? 12 volt conversion

John, can you set up a bench test or the motor without the linkage arms??? If so try the motor with the polarity reversed and see if the direction of rotation changes. If like it has been suggested that the motor is polarity dumb, then all you would have to do is to wire it up with a voltage reducer, regardless of ground.

I converted my 52 1/2 ton to 12 volt neg. gnd. almost 10 years ago. My 6 volt electric wipers would not work with a voltage reducer for some reason so I removed it and have been running them on the slow setting on the 2 speed switch ever since.

I thought maybe this was happening with mine because all the wiring is original and may have lost some of it's conductivity. Corrosion is maybe acting like a resistor and not delivering the full voltage down the line. Just a guess.

This is just a guess, but I'll bet that the in the two speed switch, the low speed is accomplished with a resistor that effectively cuts the voltage enough to keep from cooking the motor on 12 volts.
