Advice on replacing cleveland style u-joints in my 49 1/2 ton?

Recommended Posts

I have searched the tech archives but can't find anything on u-joint replacement involving the older style "clevelend" tab style u-joints. Is it pretty straight forward or is there a specific procedure that insures proper removal and installation? I have a couple nos joints ready to go in but I'm waiting to hear from someone who has done it and knows of any possible glitches I may encounter. Also any advice on being able to grease that hard to reach little zerk fitting again after installation? And how hard is it to remove the rear yoke off the differential if I need to update to the u-bolt style of u-joint? thanks everybody.

The " Cleveland Style " U joints are straight forward, bend down locking tabs then use 7/16 box wrench to remove. Mark  the relationship of driveshaft to rear end  and  transmission, otherwise you might get vibrations @. High Speeds. On my truck there was enough play / movement to slide the shaft clear enough to remove . A VERY easy job that can be done in one afternoon with all the parts there I ordered mine from Roberts Motors last year $ 150.00 + Shipping ordered on Monday , delivered by  Wednesday afternoon,Back on the road Wednesday night
