  1. I think I really need a GAZ M-72 now. Hmmm, I already have a 1950 Dodge Meadowbrook and a couple of old Chevy 4x4s for parts... Excellent post man! Don't worry, your English seems better than most Americans I talk to on a daily basis.

  3. Carr show at my favorite little brewery, about an hour away. Car running great except for lots of oil smoke on decel from highway speeds. This is my first long drive after the piston fix, so hopefully the smoke will start to clear up soon. Still better check the oil before I head back, haha. Besides, all the dudes at the show are just dying to see that 230" plant I bet. Was gonna post some pics from my phone but either Photobucket/my phone/this website (or all three) are being absolutely infuriating right now. Maybe a pic or two when I get home tonight.
  4. Years back I commuted in about a 1982 VW Rabbit diesel non turbo. I remember heading home one day into a stiff North wind, probably 30mph, gusting up to like 45. I had my foot to the floor for the whole 20 minute trip. Slowing to about 45mph up the hills and letting it run to a majestic top speed of maybe 64 down the really big hills. Of course that's when I encountered a shiny state patrol crown Vic. Oops. I couldn't help but laugh as he walked up to the window and looked over my 30 year old crap-can of a car. He said he caught me doing 63mph! I started laughing again. He asked me what was so funny, so I told him my ordeal. He kind of stepped back and looked at the car again and must have decided that I was probably telling the truth. Got a warning and he let me go on my way. Of course he got me on the last big hill. I don't think I reached 55mph the whole rest of the way home.

  6. Here in SW Iowa you can still walk into a hardware store and find a bowl. Napa can order them if you find a parts guy that still read a paper catalog.

  8. Lots of stuff going on with the fitty the last couple weeks! New shoes! Noice! Much Wow Cool! Now that it looks kinda badass what should we take care of first? The sketchy stock rear brakes I've still never even checked, like ever, and the car sat for something like 40 years? Nah, it's fine. Just fine. Oh, maybe a heater would be nice! Nah, it'll be warm soon. Maybe next winter. Windshield wipers that don't leak so much vacuum that the idle jumps 500 rpm when they are switched on. Nah, scientists have invented Rain-X! Nope, lets work on the disgusting interior! I don't have to look at all that other stuff every day. Out with the old This is what we started with. Blanket covered front seat and no rear seat at all. Remember this is only temporary, unless it works. What! Yeah they still fold (kinda) flatI Hahaha This amuses me, and I'm thinking of removing the rear bulkhead and using it to haul longer stuff. Is it structural? Like overly? Next time I'll tackle the front seats.

  10. I should also add that it only smells when it is burning. When it's not on fire it has no odor whatsoever. Strangely enough, not on fire seems to be my cars default setting so I usually don't even notice it.
  11. Despite my best efforts, I just couldn't get the peel n seal in my car to go up in a raging inferno. Had to do some welding on my floor to install some seat mounts and all the peel n seal stuff did was melt and puddle, which I will admit made welding difficult. It did catch on fire a bit, but seemed content on self-extinguishing after a second or two. It smelled and smoked something awful though. I probably took ten years off my life with the fumes, but if I were keeping track of all the things I've done to shorten my lifespan throughout the years I probably should have died about twelve years ago. Here's to living on borrowed time.
  12. Will have discs all around as soon as I install my Grand Cherokee rear axle. Every single wheel cylinder on my car leaked and the master cylinder was bad. There's no doubt drum brakes work fine for the most part, but I'm not gonna spend any money repairing them. To me that's just throwing good money after bad. Discs are easier to service, work better and I can go to any parts store for parts when the time arrives. And I hate working on drum brakes.
  13. Most battery warranties are pro-rated once you get out of the free replacement period. The parts stores usually consider a group 1 battery a commercial or ag battery so they don't offer much warranty. Think mine was 12 months pro-rated. So if it had went bad in six months I would be on the hook for half the price of a new one as a warranty exchange. Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances.
  14. Haha first time my wife rode in the car it was pretty hot out. I saw her out of the corner of my eye getting ready to roll her window down. Like really steeling herself for the arduous task ahead. I could tell she was expecting a battle. (She has ridden with me in a great number of old piles over the years.) She grabbed ahold of the window crank with all her might and was amazed that it rolled right down with hardly any effort. It was pretty amusing.
  15. I notch where the gaskets come together and then cut them off flush. Then apply a skim coat of silicone on the thing. No leaks at all yet. Actually, my 230 leaks way less oil than a couple of my more modern heaps.
  16. I agree with young ed up there. Possibly just had some air in there that needed to be burped out.
  17. Not too much. Got the front tire rub issue mostly sorted by running some skinnier tires and adding a couple shims behind the wheels. Gonna try and grab a set of even skinnier ones off a caravan or something next junkyard trip and lose the shims. Also skinny tires might help the armstrong power steering unit out. The real story however was the back end... Turns out way way bigger tires than 235/75r15s can fit back there. Like 275/60r15s! We had a couple at the shop that came with an auction lot a couple years ago. Figured I might as well put them to use! I'll try and get some pics up later, it's starting to look like a real joe dirt machine. Oh and I hacked the exhaust off and installed a 2" glasspack just for lulz. Sounds okay for now. Which brings me to the next part. The bummer part. Most of the things I have planned for the car will require it be not driveable for longish periods of time, like for the disc brake rear swap, the split manifold and dual exhaust install, hell, even getting the cracked right windshield replaced will take a day of running around. And I don't want it to be down right now, haha. I've been daily driving it. Now that it doesn't sound like it's gonna fly apart anymore, I've been using it everyday and I'm having fun with it, so that other stuff can wait. Also, now that it doesn't sound like a rod might soon ventilate the block, I'm beginning to really like the flathead. I've been toying pretty hard with buying a wrecked dodge ram and swapping in the complete fuel injected V8/automatic setup, but living with this flathead for a year has maybe bought the little six another chance. I sort of feel like it would ruin the car if it didn't have the flathead.

  19. Oops, guess I spoke too soon when I said the grand Cherokee wheels fit just right. Turns out the fronts rub on the upper control arm and tie rod ends at certain angles. Ordered some cheapie wheel shims today. I think I only need an eighth inch or so. The rears fit perfectly on the stock axle with no trouble at all. I'm digging it, much meaner looking especially from the rear. Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm just messing around trying out things that I think are cool. Glad some of you also get a kick out of it.
  20. Hey there! Thanks for the offer, took me this long to check my email. Yeah she's up and running again temporarily, before the next round of repairs/improvements start. Engine is running about as well as can be expected for an old jalopy, meaning that with the knock gone I can really her the valves rattling, hahah. I ended up ordering all the parts off rockauto for $69.99 plus shipping. (Piston, Oil pan gasket, cylinder head gasket.) Seriously! These things are cheaper to run than small block chebbies! One of my customers old Grand Cherokees had a transmission go bad, so they sold the thing to me for scrap. Next up is a rear axle swap with disc brakes. Hopefully the fluid drive can cope with a 3.55:1 rear gear ratio. Already nabbed the wheels and tires. Really really surprised the jeep wheels and 235/75R15's fit in there with only the slightest amount of butchery. I think I like it. And it sure drives better with modern tires than the skinny bias plies it had before. The kids have been drawing on it again thanks to nice weather.
  21. Aaarggh i saw that exact same hubcap at the Goodwill last weekend for next to nothing and passed it up! (i'm in a downsizing phase) Had I known it would make such a gorgeous air cleaner I would have nabbed it up.
  22. Had a couple hours free to finally tackle the mystery engine knock. It sounded kind of like a rod knock, but less consistent, and only under load. I checked the bottom end earlier and everything looked pretty good, but I installed new rod and main bearings anyway since I was in there. No change. Drove the car all over with that knock this summer. Probably a thousand miles or so and noticed it getting progressively worse. Pulling spark plug wires one at a time revealed the noise went away when #5 cylinder wasn't firing! Finally! I tried this last year but couldn't get the knock to show itself in the shop, had to be driving with a significant load (pulling a hill, etc). Pulling spark plug wires one at a time also revealed that my ignition system seems to be working pretty well, as it had no problems shooting a 1/2" gap right through a heavy leather welding glove. That stuff will wake you up better than coffee, haha. Well, now I know where to look. Let's do this! He's smiling because he got to run the impact wrench. Slight scoring on #5 cylinder wall... hmm, so far so good... Whoa, that's not good! Are pistons supposed to have speed holes? Well, that explains the noise at least. Cylinder wall looks a bit scored, but I cant feel it with a fingernail or anything and there's no ring ridge to speak of so I'm just going to replace the piston and run it. And maybe mill the head since it's off, and then get a twin carb intake, and then a split exhaust manifold, and then, and then, and then...

  24. Not to thread hijack, but since all the speedometer peeps are here... Any idea why the speedo on a 1950 would read 10-12 mph slow? Does it just need a good lube and cleaning up ya think?
  25. Thanks! It was pretty fun at the couple shows I went to. That cruise night had some amazing high dollar machines. Like a gorgeous Yenko Camaro, hot rods of all types, etc, and there were crowds of people checking out and drawing all over my $1500 pile. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into a nice classic car, but it's all so boring after awhile. After seeing so many "please don't touch" signs at car shows over the years I thought it would be fun to have a car where people were encouraged to touch it and draw all over it. Hell, even little kids sitting on the hood and trunk for pictures. I thought it was hilarious. No need for an eraser. Unfortunately the old girl sits outside most of the time, so any rain at all takes it right back to hot rod black.
