Hi Keith, enjoyed your video. The first thing I would do with this car is pull both side covers off the engine and do a thorough clean out. Make sure the oil drain holes to the pan are open. A rattle can of carb cleaner helps with final cleanup. Leave the pan on until this is done and the mess is better contained. Then pull the pan and give it and the oil pump pick up screen a good cleaning. It is best to disassemble the screen assembly. After doing this, you can use detergent oil. On reassembly, do not cut off the end seals that stick up a little above the pan sealing surface. These will crush and give a better seal. Love your Plymouth, it’s much like my ‘39 Dodge more door.

Nice looking original Keith. The sedans are nice because you can take friends or family with you on a cruise.

I did not see him mention installing the valve guides in an alternating up- down position.

Hi Keith, I understand and agree with your decision on the engine. Why buy what you don’t need and can’t use? Regarding your tough crowd comment, you experienced why I seldom post on here anymore. Case in point; in the very recent past two separate individuals inquired about info on installing a V8 in their old Plymouth. Mr Plymouthy Adams referred them to the Hamb site where more of this info is available. Not a disparaging comment was made that I saw. However, several months back I made exactly the same recommendation (with different wording) and was jumped on hard and repeatedly. I have never been afraid of a fight but this is not the place for that. There are a few on here that are very knowledgeable and helpful. I both respect and enjoy the advice of Plymouthy and Dodge B4ya. But there are others on here who seem to more concerned with impressing us with how much they know rather than using this great site to lend a helping hand.

Navy Chief, I have a 51 1 ton with fluid drive. It has the chrome Fluid Drive letters on both sides of the hood. Don’t have it running yet, so can’t answer your drivability questions. The old Kansas farmer I bought the truck from said he loved the Fluid Drive. Hope that helps.

Love that Oldsmobile. I drove a 52 to high school. Paid $60 for it. Took 60 hours in a hot hay field to pay for it. The good old days.

James, 49 Plymouth’s did not have overdrive. Your trans is either from a newer Plymouth, or a Chrysler, Desoto, or Dodge. Doesn’t matter which as they are interchangeable. What you need to know is what model overdrive it is. They are made by Borg- Warner. The number you need is cast in the transmission case. It is a number preceded by the letter r. Mine is from a 37 Chrysler and is a r6. It is a mechanical kick down model. If yours has a solenoid sticking out of it you may have a r10. Finding this number will pinpoint what unit you have and need parts for.

I can understand that, probably all of us has been there. Hang in there. A year ago I found 2 different guys on Craigslist that had purchased Dodge trucks and pulled the flathead with trans to install a V8. I bought both complete engines with trans still bolted on for $100 each. 6 months ago on Craig’s list I found a free 201 engine complete. All 3 of these guys just wanted them out of their shop.

Tyler, it may take a little time but a crank can be found at a reasonable cost. If you can’t afford the VPW price, what do you think it will cost to buy a V8, get it ready, and install it? Don’t give up on your flathead.

Do yourself a favor, leave the Autolites in it. I would NOT use Champion plugs if they were free.
