  1. I have a 38 coupe for 25 years, my favorite car! I'm running a LA motor, 727 and 8 3/4 rear. Just added a gear vendors overdrive. I used the stock front end with a disc conversion for years until I got tired of the "strong arm" steering. Converted to Scott's IFS with power rack & pinion. What a difference! That made the car a real pleasure to drive anywhere, anytime! My wife will even drive it now. Since your building a hot rod, I'd strongly recommend changing out the front end. Yes, it's more money but not that bad when you consider money spent rebuilding and upgrading the stock stuff. I installed mine myself even though I had never done any kind of frame work before. It was challenging but doable. I did have a professional welder come in and finish the welding after I tacked it together.
  2. Yes I have welting. I think it's mounted right, just wanted to make sure. Who knows what caused the crack. It's getting time for a repaint anyway!
  3. I put together my 38 coupe years ago using aftermarket smooth running boards. I didn't have the originals or the mounts so I made my own, bolting the mounts directly to the frame and the boards. I've developed a crack in a front fender from a mounting hole inward and am wondering if this is because of my mounts. Were they supposed to be rubber mounted so they could flex with the body mounts? Thanks
  4. I'm a fan of Posies springs too. They will make them std height or lowered. fair price, great product!
  5. 58 Prostreet was right! 2- 5/8 AND 4 5/16 per side. I'd still like the seat to go back another inch or two, so I'll modify the brackets some day.
  6. Thanks! That's a good place to start!
  7. Thanks for the help so far. Mine were missing when I bought the car, so the seat would only stay in the forward position. I'm hopping someone knows the size to save some experimentation!
  8. 47 Plymouth special deluxe. I have discovered the bearings are missing in the seat adjuster track on the drivers side. Does anyone out there know what size goes in there and how to get them in? Thanks!
  9. Ah, thank you! I should have asked before I took the panel off!
  10. Hi There! I just picked up a 47 Ply 4dr to haul the grandkids around and keep my 38 coupe company. The lock cylinder on the drivers side moves in & out about 1/4 ". It still operates, and the pass. side is tight. I have the panel off but can't see what might be loose or missing. Any ideas? thanks!
  11. Andy, no doubt you can run radials on the orig suspention with good results. I ran them on my drop axle too but it steered like a bus no mater what I tried! I'm only saying if your going to modify the car anyway, you may be ahead in the long run to put new stuff on it, especialy if your going to drive it a lot. I learned this leason on my 56 Chevy. By the time I put tubular A arms , drop spindles, disc brakes, sway bar and power steering on it I spent the same money as a new IFS with rack & pinion. James, the Scotts front end comes already welded to new frame sections. All you do is cut out 20" of the old frame and weld in the new pieces with the crossmember already attached.
  12. I'll bet if you add up the cost to add disc brakes, springs, shocks, rebuild parts ect. you won't be far off the price of a new IFS. With the new IFS you get correct geometry for radial tires, power steering if you want it and coilovers. I'm putting a Scott's Hot Rods IFS on my 38 right now. The Scotts front end is far superior to Fat Man, and less $$ then the big names. It's a big job, but if you can measure & weld it's doable. My car has a 67 318, and the next step is motor mounts. If you do go with Scott's, be aware that their written directions leave alot to be desired, but they usully respond to emails or phone calls within a day. I can give you alot of hard earned tips if you need them!
  13. Hello everybody,I'm new to the forum I have a 38 Ply. bus coupe I've had for 15 years. It had been hot rodded back in the 60's, and has a 318/727/8 3/4 combo in it. I'm in the prosess of changing over to a Scotts IFS. I'm wondering if there is supposed to be rubber body mounts between the Radiator support and the frame. Mine was just bolted up solid with spacers. Thanks Brad
