  1. Hi, your car is very nice! I have a true 1949 P18 2 door. I have been told that the true 1949 were shipped with the triple ripple bumper front and back. Mine does have the triples. I believe that there were a host of changes but many were not very important. welcome to the P15-D24 site and enjoy your car. James Fuller
  2. Hi all, I’m looking for a replacement carb for my 218 IL 6 Plymouth engine. What’s there is a Carter Ball and Ball that is worn out to the point that a new rebuild kit still won’t stop the leaks. I’d be open to a good rebuilt or even a new one if I must. any ideas? thanks in advance James Fuller
  3. During the continuing rebuild on my 49 P18 it became apparent that the radiator was going to need to be replaced. I looked around and finally settled on a radiator from an eBay seller that advertised a drop in fit. Well it was close but the mounting flanges on the side were all wrong. This after sitting in my shop for 3 months and too late for return. Radiators 2 & 3 came and were returned a couple of days after receiving them. I finally took the original aluminum radiator to our local aluminum welding shop along with the 70 year old one that we removed from the car. He cut off the aluminum Flanges and welded them back on in there proper places. He charged me $300.00. That along with the $175.00 I paid for the aluminum rad. makes your $400 - $800 figure sound about right ? After some cutting and filing it is mounted and it should be fine. We should be good to go with the exception of getting a couple of exhaust pipes bent up and mounted. i guess that my point is that there is no “Drop in replacement” anything out there that I have found. james Fuller
  4. Thanks Frank, I'll try to confirm that they are the same. They probably are. James Fuller
  5. Hi, I have been replacing my 49 Plymouth piece by part since starting out to replace a motor with a rebuilt one. I'm now in need of an oil seal for the front of the rear axle. it goes between the yoke and the front pinion bearing. I don't have a part number for it and have not had any luck searching by description. does anybody have a suggestion where I might find one? Or a proper description? Thanks in advance, James Fuller
  6. Hi, thanks for the input. I’ll see what I can find as well. I have a vintage air for my 69 Torino fastback. They really work well. james
  7. I notice that there are lots of electric compressors from Toyota Prius on eBay. I wonder if someone who knows more than I do could cobble up an ac that wouldn’t depend on our 6’s for power. Perhaps couple it to the underdash units that are available. james
  8. Apart from tie rod ends which are available from everybody I need to find a source for the many rubber parts in the steering between the steering wheel and the tie rod ends which attach to the front wheels. Actually, I think that there may be some leather along with rubber on some of the bushings. I’ve had no luck in finding them. Anybody know someone who might have them? I’ve looked at Birnbaum, Rock Auto, eBay to name a few that have been helpful in the past. No luck. thanks, james Fuller
  9. JerseyHarold, thanks for the information. I really thought they all were alike mechanically (49 thru 51). I suppose that there must be other differences as well. James Fuller
  10. I’m looking for a source for a radiator for my 49 Plymouth sedan. There are multiple sellers offering radiators that are supposed to fit but they will not. The problem is the welded or brazed on mounting flanges. The Plymouth flange is unusual in that the flange is mounted about an 1-1/4” back from the front at the bottom then sloped forward to the top at the front. All of the radiators that I can find have the mounting flanges straight up and down. They are unusable because they move the radiator so far forward that there is not enough room to put a fan belt between the fan and the radiator. any ideas?
  11. Nice Find. My first car was a 1949 Black 2 door P18 that looked just like yours. A really nice car and fun to drive. That was back in 1959. I gave a hundred bucks for it. Wish I had kept it. ? I bought another one five years ago. It is a nice driving car and equally fun to drive. Right now it is in my shop getting a rebuilt flat head six engine, front disk brakes, an overdrive, HVI distributor, plug wires and plugs, conversion to drive shaft with modern U joints, new radiator, and heater coil. Yours looks very nice. Good luck with it. I'll try to attach a picture of mine. Hope it goes through. James Fuller
  12. Dennis, Does the mount that Scarebird makes for the wilwood master cylinder work on the 49 Ply? I have the Scarebird disk brakes on order and can see that I’m going to need to use a dual master cylinder
  13. Several years ago I bought a 49 ply sedan that had been been painted and had a new interior installed. I knew when I bought it that it would need some engine / drive train work. I picked up an engine a couple of years ago here on P15-D24 that had been re built. Then life got in the way. I finally started chasing parts pulled the old engine out and so on. I’m installing front disk brakes, new clutch, water pump, overdrive, radiator, etc. the drive shaft along with the universal joints look pretty bad. Oldmoparts sells a complete kit for the universal joints for $200.00. Takes one for each end or $400.00. Or i can get a new drive shaft made up that uses regular U-joints for about the same price. That is about the last big decision I’ll have to make. I hope. Anyone have any suggestions? I do love that old flathead six. Oh. I bought some split Exhaust manifolds from Langton stove bolt 6. ought to sound great too. Several of the guys here have given me a hard time abought not putting in a V-8 in it but the car was designed around the 4 and then the 6. And as I said, I love it. I should be able to drive at 65 on the road with the OD. I’m thinking. well, guide me guys. Let me know what you think. james
  14. Thanks for all the suggestions for sources. I found one from an eBay seller who showed that he had 10 NIB parking brake bands for $135.00 shipped. He also had the “make offer” button on. I thought what the heck and made a $75.00 offer. He took it! thanks again for the help. james
  15. Hi Ed, i need the entire band. It was missing when I got the car. Fortunately I live on the New Mexico high plains. Nothing that leaving it in second gear won’t take care of. :-) James
