  1. Hi Andy im new to the site and a fellow ausy from Perth im looking for info on my 1955 dodge Kingsway coronet which i recently bought from Victoria it has a 251 cubic engine and not the 230 or 237 as it should, engine number is V610300P SERIAL NUMBER 7892995  VIN D49S4931 I'm not sure if its a kew engine from a truck or a Chrysler engine as the engine number does not seem to match anything I can find the crankshaft has been machined 020 thou on the mains and bigends crank shaft journals are 2 1/2 inch mains and 2 1/8 on the bigends and so different from the 237 ci I would like to identify this engine so I can buy parts bearings and rings etc any info would be very gratefully received thank you cheers Dan.

From what I've picked up in info over the years the mid 50's here in Oz were a real mixture as to what engines we got......as follows

...........the D49 1/2 with the 3 speed had the 23" 230 cube engine

.....the  D49 1/2  with the Overdrive had the 25" 228.1 engine

......the D49 3/4 with the powerflite had the 25" 250.6 engine

1955 had no side trim on the doors  and 1956 had chromed hooded headlight surrounds..............lol...........so from pics your car maybe a 1956..........but I'm no expert on these models..........lol.........here in Oz as far as I am aware all 25" engines were basically what were known as "Kew" engines, being obtained from Canada via the UK Chrysler Plant in KEW, London, England as being part of the Commonwealth the supply from Canada offered tax concessions....never use the "KEW" term when dealing with US guys as they have no idea what you are talking about......lol........

.........these 25" engines, depending on the bore & stroke could have been 218.06, 228.1 or 250.6 capacity whereas the 23" ex USA sourced Plymouth/Dodge based engines were 201/217.8 and 230 cubic inch capacity with NO internally interchangable parts with the 25" DeSoto/Chrysler based engines.......

............my understanding is that the 218/228/250 or 251 if you wish, all use the same mains at 2 & 1/2"  and big ends at 2 &1/8th, at least thats what my workshop manuals covering the 1946-56 Dodge/DeSoto & Plymouth and 1957-62 Chrysler Royals indicate..........

...........I've not heard of a 237 size engine used here in Oz, I thought that size was actually a USA DeSoto size...........but could be wrong.........I would go on what the big end and main sizes are.........who have you contacted for bearings?...........I dunno if any of this helps..........lol...........btw my email address is scaleautomobilia@yahoo.com and phone number anytime is 02-66-425963, I'm in South Grafton, NSW, 2 hrs ahead of West Oz.........nice looking car, BTW........regards,.Andy Douglas
