  1. I use the Nada site to ballpark the car's value. The one you're looking at looks nice on the outside but needs an interior. I think the Nada low retail value applies.
  2. I thought of another thing-no chrome trim on the windshield and divider.
  3. I've been looking for a P 15 2 door sedan. I bumped into a Deluxe and I guess I haven't seen one before. The interior is completely different from the special deluxe-different dashboard, upholstery, door panels,no horn ring. I knew about the optional second wiper and sun visor and the 9' hubcaps. What else is different? Surprisingly the deluxe has a higher NADA value probably because 50,000 were produced vs the 125,000 special deluxes.
  4. I'm dealing with the same issue. I'm also thinking of buying a 1948 P 15 Special Deluxe. So far I have found the Nada site to be useful and also I looked up average auction prices which run lower when commissions are considered. I place to use these numbers as a guide with adjustments for known needed repairs, missing parts, lack of a radio etc. I do see many cars listed for more than the high retail. I wonder if they sell for anything close to that.
  5. It was definitely the screw threads that were stripped. I think I'll be ok with a new screw. I visited the local hardware stores and no one has one. I'm going to borrow the one from my spare motor. I'll just have to go little longer with the old pigtail wire. I haven't started the car since the fall before last and the tuneup parts were toast.
  6. I have changed lots of point sets and this is the first time I have ever found the threads stripped on the screw that holds the set down. it's a wonder the car ran as well as it did for as long as it did.
  7. Does anybody know where I can get the captioned parts?
  8. Rusty, you are having the same reaction I often have when I have to buy a part. I still haven't figured out if the parts are worth what is being asked or if there is profiteering going on. If you wait and ask around you may come up with a better deal, but if you want it now it will probably cost you.
  9. When I was in high school I worked at an oil mixing plant. I used to mix motor oils in batches of several hundred gallons to maybe a thousand. I clearly remember that Pennsylvania grade oil was green in color and that Mideast oil was blue in color. That tells me that the oil in question is probably from the Mideast.
  10. My P15 sports a set of whitewall Firestone Deluxe Champions. The only other marking other than the 600:16 size and made in USA is that they are gum dipped. The have almost no tread wear but I suspect that they are 15 or twenty years old. They do not have any sidewall cracking but the whitewalls show age. I have done trips at 60 mph for and hour or more several times with no problems. I know tire manufacturers recommend replacing any tire that is six years old or older. Do they still make these? Would they have a dot date code on the opposite side of the tire? What do you folks recommend doing in this situation ?
  11. When I used to drive my P15 in wet slushy snow, the recesses for the spark plugs on the top of the engine would gradually fill with water and one by one the plugs would short out. I kept a paint brush in the trunk that I would use to wisk out the water and the engine would restart and I'd be on my way again. I know there are spark plug wire boots that will fill the recess and prevent this condition from developing. My question is: Were there originally splash guards under the engine that I am missing or how was the car originally set up so that this didn't happen?
  12. Randy, The way your plate is attached is the way I'd like to attach mine. There is a bolt hole in the bumper behind your plate. What did you use for a bracket? I have an original bracket, but it will have the plate sitting higher up over the bumper.
  13. Maybe I'm just a clumsy shifter, but I could never get a fluid drive car to shift as nicely as a standard clutch car. I just couldn't get the splines going at the same speed. I have always wondered about welding the fluid clutch together to make it work like a standard clutch. I have heard about this being done but I have never met anyone that did it. I would think that this modification would make for smoother shifting. Has anyone done this? How did it work out? I would think that this would be an easier way to get better shifting.
  14. My 1947 P15 has three front bumperettes. One of them is dead center. It came to me that way and it appears that it has always had them. I don't know if this was an old time custom touch or an option. The problem is that it leaves no bolt hole to use in mounting a license plate bracket. Have you folks seen cars set up like this? How is your front license plate mounted? I have the bracket and plan to paint it Rustoleum gloss black enamel. Is this correct?
  15. You already now more than you did and the answer to your letter will probably add to your knowlege about the car and your appreciation of it. I hope you find that it belonged to someone who valued it, loved it, and took care of it. The fellow you wrote to will probably be happy to learn that you have the car and that it is in good hands. Please post what you find out.
