I might have an OEM filter from a tear down.  Let me know.

My 54 Belvedere is positive ground.  The pos bolts to the engine head back to the battery.

  I think a 10W30 is a detergent oil.  A straight weight oil such SAE30 is non detergent.  Also are you using a filter on your car if you are using 10W30?

An oil will say whether it has detergents or not.

If all we ever did was a search...then there would be no more forum.

I run whatever is on sale.  I stay away from synthetics, but gobble up any older, higher in zinc oil.

Or you could have the floats boil over and mix gas with the oil....cleans the motor FAST!

Either is fine.  Monitoring the oil pressure is a great idea.

The Plymouth manual says "any" oil pressure is okay....

Tiptoe would require a different carb too, right?

I scored some Valvoline VR1 racing oil from AutoZone when it was $1.00 a quart.  10w-30 was the viscosity. 

I added one quart to an oil change to increase the zinc for the 230. 

The other oil was SAE 30 PennZoil which was also a $1.00 a quart.

Why was the Valvoline blue???

I use SAE 30 or a 5w-30.  brand not important.  I did score some Valvoline 10w-30 VR racing oil when AZ had it reduced for a buck.  Tons of zinc in that oil! 

I always thought about doing the paper filter as well.

Then I got to thinking.....(not very hard mind you).  One of the novelties of having these classic cars is the way they function.  An oil bath filter draws some curiosity.  So I decided to leave as is.

I love talking about oil....in my experience I have ran just about every weight of oil in my 230, along with different brands. 

Not once have I heard a strange noise, loss of pressure, higher pressure, pinging, slap, etc.

Do what makes you feel good, and follow advice from trusted car friends. 

Whenever you can, buy it cheap and stack it deep!

My dad had his 63 t bird motor rebuilt...several mechanics told him the same thing about the zinc. 

Won't the numbers be somewhat jumbled if it goes over 100k?  Under 100k they should be nice and even.

Hmmm. verrry interesting. So, I guess any name brand 10w=30w oil is fine for the old flatheads. Summer or winter. Ed

I would agree.  I have been running 10w-30 SAE 30 5w-30 whatever is on sale. 

I went back and bought the 5w-50.  $1 a quart is too hard to pass up. 

$1 a quart I even passed on it.  I did see Quaker State 20w-50  for $1 a quart.

Auto Zone had a big blowout of oil the last couple days.  Was able to score some SAE 30 and some Valvoline racing 10w-40 VR1 oil for the Plymouth. 

They had a ton of this Castrol...says Classic car formula??

Looks nice and gray...Be sure to screw the top on REAL hard, or it may leak.

My engine came from the Plymouth that turned into the Sniper build.

I saw the ad on Craigslist for a 230 P25 and a PowerFlite transmission...$200 for both.  The ad said the motor came from the original car used from the Sniper build, and it still turns by hand.  So my father and I drove down to Manteno and picked up the motor and trans. 

Of course you always buy the product, not the story.  But i had to ask how this guy happened to have the engine for so many years, and how he acquired it.  Well, he said, I work there.  Then we went to the shop for a tour!

I had my OEM pump rebuilt by NAPA.  Not even a 1000 miles and it squeels a lot, and spits fluid under the hood and onto the battery, which I mistook for acid.

Sounds just like my 54.

Should be a 230.  oil pressure sounds good!
