  1. I've got one of those for my truck that I haven't put on yet. You can get a paper filter to go in there in place of the stone thing. Shel did you buy it from the yard?
  2. If you can find a decent one you should be able to epoxy and repaint. I just did mine.
  3. Mine certainly has complete ownership of the driveway then!
  4. Certainly am having problems all the time. It gets really annoying when you are traveling long distances. Which I will be tomorrow!
  5. I think a surge is a better description of the issue. At steady high speeds the engine doesn't run smoothly. It makes it feel almost like the is lurching ahead but its a little more subtle then that. If I had a vacuum leak wouldn't I have issues at low speeds too?
  6. It does it at freeway speed. Sometimes even as low as 45. I don't know for sure its the carb. I tried that other one to see if I could determine that one way or the other and that carb was so bad the car wouldn't even run. We've got lots of these things around so I may raid one from a car that I already know runs well. Thats a PITA but it should tell me lots. Oh Also my heat riser doesn't have the weight or spring but it does move freely.
  7. Norm where do you get that nevr-dull stuff? Been looking for some to try on my door handles and dash chrome.
  8. Vacuum advance was bad and already switched to a checked out ok used one. I know it could still be the carb. I was trying to eliminate or determine if thats what it was by switching. You can see how well that worked out! I did have some trouble with that brass needle piece you are talking about sticking. I sanded it and got it to move pretty freely but its not 100%.
  9. Ok the car runs again here's what I did. Looks like a few of you had it nailed while I was out working on it. I pulled the air cleaner and looked for gas spray. nada. Pulled the top off the carb and nothing looked out of the ordinary so I swapped back to my old one. Something bad wrong with that supposedly rebuilt carb. Before I put my old carb back on I did take all the guts out and sprayed it down with carb spray. There was some fine sediment in the bottom but nothing too horrible. Now my car runs but it still has a little surging at 55-60ish. So I have cleaned out the carb, swapped that flex line for the fuel pump, changed fuel filter, pulled the bottom off the fuel pump and checked for gunk. I did find 2 little round bb's of rubber in the bottom of the fuel pump but I still have the issue after removing those. Oh checked dwell and timing and they were ok too. Starting to run out of things to check. Gas tank was professionally cleaned and sealed. It does have a homemade ferrul in the line and old steel line between the tank and the pump rubber hose. After the trip this weekend I may replace the ferrul with my real one and redo that steel line.
  10. Bob you were in MN and didn't stop in ???
  11. Jon glad to see you remembered how to post I do have your number still. Might be next week before I have time to come over there. We'll see how the after work repairs go.
  12. I think you guys are getting inline fuses confused with fuseable links.
  13. Frank I think we might have the same one. Also with similar issues on the air. Works much better when it isn't humid out. Sorry can't help you too much we have pretty much the same issues!
  14. I'm certainly not upset about it. Its your car and you are right at least its not tuna cans now. I do get a little bothered by people who start chopping and then don't finish. I also would not get upset if James put a SBC in his car. It really is a shame he had such bad luck with the flatheads. Heck after all that maybe I'd be considering a v8 too! The only part of all of this I don't agree with is that after doubling the horse power and more then likely switching to an automatic tranny that it would still drive the same.
  15. No fuel line goes right into the carb. There is an inline filter in that line which I changed about a week ago. I also changed the rubber fuel line from the original to a modern piece of hose. So far no change in the freeway driving until last night when I didn't even make it to the freeway!
  16. I guess then it would be time to go green and start carpooling. Thankfully we don't live in some third world country where something like that may be necessary. Look at cuba. Norms scenario happens all the time there. I guess if we truely were that stuck we would put whatever in whatever to get around. That will not be happening anytime soon.
  17. I believe most of us in here are not relying on our old mopars for everyday transportation. So if something happened to the motor in there it wouldn't matter if it was broken down for a few days. Heck my 48 just spent like 3 days with no steering wheel and is in fact broken down in my driveway right now! Now if my 94 dakota suddenly lost its engine and I had to get to work what would I do? The yugo motor would not be even considered because of all the work involved with getting a custom motor put in. I'd head to the junkyards and look for either another 3.9v6 or a 318 or 360 from a ram or dakota. Any of those would bolt right in to my truck. Otherwise I suppose I'd have to get my existing v6 repaired or rebuilt. The shop that did my flathead had it completely rebuilt in 12 days. I would think he could turn out a modern engine in that time or less.
  18. We who love old MOPARS do this because we love them or else we would drive Fords or Chevrolets if it was money only. Just curious how a mopar with a chevy engine isn't like driving a chevy?
  19. I'll be trying these things after work. I may pull the top off this carb and have a look before removing it completely. So strange that I couldn't even get a sputter out of it.
  20. Been chasing a stumble at freeway speed in the 48. Swapped on a rebuilt carb that I got. It was rebuilt who knows how long ago and I dont know how well. Now here is the issue. Car was running ok with just that stumble. Put new carb on dumped a little gas down it to give it a head start on getting filled. Car started right up. I let it run for maybe a minute. Then I put the aircleaner back on and worked on getting the horn wire ran back down the steering column. After that maybe 45min later I decided to go for a test drive. Car started right up. I pulled into the alley and got to the far end. Slowed to look for traffic and it died. No restart. After a few minutes I called a neighbor and we towed it back to my driveway. Now it was pretty late so I haven't really checked much. I did check to make sure I didnt knock the coil wire off or something when I was working on the horn wire. Could this "rebuilt" carb possibly be so bad it wouldn't run at all? I've personally never seen a carb so bad a car wouldn't run but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. The carb is a little bit later style that has auto choke linkage on it but I didnt think that would really matter just for the purpose of testing the carb. The whole idea was to determine if hte carb was the cause of the stumble or not and go from there. I will be checking this thing out more tomorrow after work-any ideas what to check appreciated.
  21. Norm is quite right. Lighter colors hide better. Part of the reason I'm thinking of switching colors on my coupe. It was black and I did already paint a little of it cruiser maroon but I'm thinking of switching to yellow. Also there is nothing wrong with a little bondo. You are using it for its intended purpose. I think the can says no more then 1/4 inch thick. That gives you lots of room to smooth out some low spots. Sanding marks can be filled with glazing putty. Another type of filler.
  22. Ya I will already be on a leaf tour with our plymouth club. I believe we are headed to SW mn. I will more then likely be in WI the following weekend. Possibly storing my car for the winter at my parents cabin. Anything going on in the hayward area? I could probably head south a ways from there too. I think Spooner is the next big town to the south.
  23. I would think older hammers would be well made and less likely to shatter. You need some cheap ones made with low grade steel. Seems to me those would be more likely to shatter.
  24. My plymouth keeps getting more road worthy. It was a pleasure driving it home with the repainted steering wheel! Dennis not sure where you are talking about as a destination. Already going on a 3day leaf your this weekend. 10-5 to 10-7
