  2. Young Ed, Sorry you don't get it. If you have the bottom of your filter going to the oil gally YES THE OIL AND DIRT WILL DRAIN FROM THE FILTER back into the oil gally but you will have oil presure on start up because the oil gally is the presure side. Never thought about it b4 but when you think about it your not getting the presure to your bearings you should be becauce it has to refill the filter. If it is hooked up right the filter will still be full because the relief valve will not open to let it drain unless under pressure. Look at the pic and see where the oil flows. Your filter has more surface on the outside to catch dirt and it can't return to the engine from the top. If you don't believe the flow chart you aren't going to believe me so do it your way. Bill

  5. Dave, Everything you say is correct. The only thing I am trying to point out is when you turn your engine off all the dirt from the filter will run back in to your bearings. Therefore you would be better off with no filter. When you run the bottom line to the relife valve it will keep the oil in the filter. There is nothing in the oil gally to stop this flow so if you have the bottom line from filter going to the top hole in your engine by all means leave the cartage or sock out. I like you don't think these filters do much anyway so why not just take them off. I installed a full flow per your drawings on my 56 230.

  7. Look at the spacer I found today, it is 1" thick which will be great for low end tork. It fits the flat 6 intake perfectly. What a great place to hook a pvc valve from your engine to the hole in the side.   8. I also have one with no vac adv that came from a 54 flathead 6 power wagon if any one needs it.
  9. Merle, The dirt should be caught on the outside of the filter where you have more surface. As I said before some filters will say in on the bottom and some will say out on the bottom but you can only put the filter in one way. I say the lines should be top to top and bottom to bottom. I tryed to send a pic from my 55 56 plymouth service manual (page 215 if anyone has one) that shows the bottom line goes to the pressure relief valve which is the bottom hole in the block. On page 167 of my 36 48 plymouth master parts list it also shows the oil flowing from top hole in the block to the top hole in the filter and the oil guage. The oil flows from the oil galleries to the top of filter and when you shut the engine off it can't run back from the top. Why would you hook your filter up backwards? I don't know. Do it your way.   10. John-T-53 There were a lot of aftermarket filters put on the flathead. No mater what it says on the filter the right way is to run top to top and bottom to bottom. There are two lines going to the block. The top line should go to the top of the filter. If you run the top line from the block to the bottom of the filter when you shut the engine off the dirty oil runs into your main oil gally which feeds the cam and main bearings. You would be much better off with no filter if you have it plumbed backwards.

  13. What is a wheel centering pin? If you mean the pin on the drum to line the wheel up with lug bolts it ant necessary.

  16. I would write all measurements down so you can find new ones. If you can't find new ones any good machine shop should be able to rerivit them for you and turn them down. I think you were sold the wrong drums. They be for a truck.

  18. Rebecca, You do not have to take anything apart to ck bearing end play. Just grab end of axle push and pull to see how far it moves in and out. Should be very slight movement. The key only needs to go in to where there is nothing sticking out but you do not want to push or drive it in any more. I think the first thing I would do is measure the hole in the old hub and the new one to see if they are the same. Also measure the depth. Never asume any thing. You will not hurt anything by putting the car in first gear while tighten. also pull your hand brake. I would retork to 175lbs after the car is back on the ground. If you have taken it out of gear and the hand brake is off the wheel should turn free.
  19. If you don't have the drum on the cone tight you are going to wind up with a bad axle and bad drum. The key is only there to stop the drum from turning on the axle. As the young one says you have some issues that you need to address NOW. Bill
