  1. Go to your local lumber yard and get a roll of thick weather stripping. That will do the job for a trip or two. I put on my new seals from Steel Rubber. Nice pliable rubber. The noise has lessened significantly
  2. Did not buy new spindles, they should never wear out. The wear is in the bushings. If they are NOT double true: (1) true to themselves and true to the spindle then they may be problematic. Got to be someone in your area who knows how to press and true the bushings. It's not that big a deal, EXCEPT for the accuracy part. When I put my king pins in I oiled them clean the with a very small hammer tapped them down. I would encourage you to take the axle out and put the spindles back on at your work bench. Much, much easier. Good lucki
  3. Like you, I looked my spindles over also, and saw some slight diviations. So I just decided to go professional on the entire spindle / king pin assembly. My pro said mine were not all that bad, but I didn't care, new had to be an improvement if nothing else just the peace of mind that accompanies such.
  4. I like Jeff's suggestion. Put it on the rack and have a safety inspection training session. I was thinking of putting a tow rope in the bed, but thought that might be tempting the "gods". That water pump is not a fun job. I put the pump on first so that I could be certain I did not mess up the seal and so I could get good wrenching on those bolts. BUT to then get those four bolts that holds the fan on is very tricky. I did put a piece of plastic against the coils, those are SHARP!. ' Don, you still have time to fly out. If you do I will give you the honor of taking the truck for a shake down run.
  5. To me, the king pins are the foundation of a good steering vehical. If they are off, then. . . So I had my old bushing pressed out, new ones pressed in and reamed. My truck drives straight and steers very easy. I have a 52 B3B. What I paid I do not recall, whatever it was, for me, it iwas money well spent. But I'm a novice mechanic so I took no chances on this. I LOVE my truck!
  6. Mark, I had to replace the water pump. The first time it LEAKED. So off it went, cleaned it all up again, back on by noon today and it's holding. Nasty job. Loading tomorrow. Oh, I found my header pipe only had one bolt in, it was too long and not tight, so two new bolts and the aroma in the cab has changed. WHEW! The miagration continues. So TIm, it's time to call out the BAND!
  7. Yes I did. I removed the pump, sharpened up the edge of agood putty knife and found I had be a bit careless. My permatex is all rubber I'm using a 3M seal a gasket for the sealer, the same sealer I used on the head gasket. Is that OK, I can still change. This is hard on knuckles, those core fins are sharp, will use glove tomorrow.
  8. I got mine from State Farm for 25/month. They asked if it was an antique, i repiied,"no, it's old". They asked if it was a collectable, I replied, "Not til someone wants to buy it." We put comp on it and nothing more. I fixed it one, I can do it again.
  9. Installed a new water pump yesterday, test drove it, and it LEAKS. Check all bolts, still leaks. SO > > > I must not have cleaned off the old gasket properly and left a small piece of old gasket. So, off it goes. . . Got to make that BBQ
  10. I kept my original paint also. First i cleaned it with lacquer thiinner, then I wet sanded it. I was too aggressive at first, then went to 800 and 1000 grit wet and took the rust off slowly. I have not waxed nor clear coated it. Steering, check youi king pins first. I replaced mine, had a machine shop press in the bushings and true the pins. Welcome, you just found a great fraternity.
  11. Pulled into a friends yard, he rebuilds cars. New sound fron somewhere. On a hunch I loosened the fan belt, sound disappeared! Water pump! It's not leaking, yet, so called napa will have a new one at daybreak, will replace immediately. GOT TO MAKE IT TO THE BBQ. Can't take any chances. I'm beginning to get a mechanics ear and I'm hearing impaired.
  12. I am NOT going to change anything before the BBQ run. I'm confident I have a well prepared / reliable truck now and to change would be foolish. Yet the input is invaluable. See you at the "Q".
  13. I know the feeling, congradulations. Got Pics? I have a nice chrome S-15 bumper that might look real nice on that red truck. I'll have it at the BBQ.
  14. Visiting with a car friend, he said one could connect two six volt batteries together in this fashion. (1) Battery A has the positive to ground and the negative to the starter post -- (2) Battery B Connect the two negative poles together and the two positive poles likewise. From Battery A run the standard six volt harness. Connect the positive post of Battery B to a fusebank. From that fusebank run 12 volt appliances: radio, radiator fan, etc. Anyone have experience with such? Edit: Tinkering like this does not appeal to me yet it is interesting to learn about the many ways things can be accomplished in the mechanical arena. Dad had a 1945 Model D John Deere tractor, it had two batteries for the starter and the lights. I always thought that was a 12 volt system, apparently it was (is) not.
  15. They do at a price of $135+/-. They were popular on the old T-rods in the 40's and 50's. I can get all kinds of 12 volt fans for $25 but no used 6 volt fans yet.
  16. What is your experience with 6 volt radiator fans? Recommendatons are welcomed.
  17. How high is the ceiling? Did you have to put thicker concrete under the corner posts?
  18. "One to die for?". Did you include a musseleum or did you score out an 8 x 5 rectangle in the middle?
  19. Headliner goes on first as per OE. I have a 5" oval aftermarket light which I like. I am putting a couple of floor lights in as well and a toggle switch OR I may put a spring loaded switch in the door post, it's easy to do.
  20. I am aware that the OE location is to the back, but that casts a shadow on one's lap. I will put my dome light on that bracket, just a better place. IMHO.
  21. I got a correction to make: I drove some 85 miles and used 7.5 gal so my mph is around 12 mph mountain drivig. @ $4.00 that is a $30 trip. It will be interesting to see what mph I get on the BBQ trip. That is 165 +/- miles. I have an overdrive transmission and I think I will put that in after the BBQ trip. Noise level reduction, door window movement, vacuum check with a gauge, seat belts are the work order today. pic: papa and granddaughter
  22. Joe, can we collaborate on this? Mine is similar. It holds steady but seems to have three locatons that it likes: "0"; 20; 45. Using a traffic mph sign at 20 mph my true speed is 30 mph. I do not know what 40+ means. I agree, that if the problem was the cable, then things should be irratic or not work at all. So I'm thinking the speedometer is dry, needs to be lubed. So that is next. Not sure how, but there is a small adj screw on the shaft housing, so will start there. I see no need to fix the ratio until the speedo works steady. Keven suggested I loosen the cable. I did, maybe not enough.
  23. I rechecked my door seals. The passenger door seals are GONE and the Driver's door are hard and broken. I just ordered a set from Steel Rubber. That will make ahuge difference. I have a rubber based sound dadener in the cab, it was free and probably does about that muhc good. Thanks for hte tips.
