  1. Not posting this to your thread because it is off-topic,but could you ask the yard owner if he has a 51 Ford in there that has the 6 cylinder engine and Fordomatic transmission? I need the bellhousing for a 51 coupe I am restoring, and bellhousings for 6 cylinders are hard to find, even though it was an option. Seems like people so cheap they went for base models were too cheap to pay extra for an automatic transmission.

I will even take a Flathead V-8 FOM transmission if I have to. If I could get one of them it would be fairly easy to make an adapter.

    Thanks,

    Arthur

49-54 Chevies are pretty much unloved compared to Fords. Maybe even a little more unloved than 49-54 Mopars. This is especially true of the 49-51 Chevy 4dr fastbacks, which *I* think have the smoothest flowing lines going.  They were beautiful when they rolled off the showroom floor. Their only real weak point was the old splash-oiling underpowered 216 inline six. The good news is 60's to 80's inline 6's are also dirt cheap with the exception of the Chevy 292's and the GMC 302's.  Racers LOVE them because they put out stupid torque, and are pretty much bulletproof. The good news is they were used in a BUNCH of industrial equipment, and if you go nosing around you can buy them dirt cheap at surplus sales, farm yards, etc, etc, etc. My neighbors even have a John Deere combine that came from the factory with a Chevy 292 6 in it.

Putting one with a turbo 350 or turbo 400 behind it in a 49-54 Chevy is only a little tougher than replacing the 216 with another 216,but once you do you will have NO trouble keeping up with traffic, running a AC,etc, etc, etc.

The only downside to the inline GM's is that even though hi-po parts are plentiful and easy to find, they are usually a little pricey.

I worked part time at a gas station in Fayetteville right before I got out of the army, and the owner had a Anglia 2dr with a 292 in it with a head made from cutting two 327 FI Chevy heads and welding them back together to create a hi-po inline 6 Chevy head,FI,a radical cam, etc, etc, etc. Purely drag race. He didn't even have ramps for his trailer. He would pull up to it,hit the hammer, and the damn thing would just hop up on the trailer. I was in awe of how he did this.

He was running a 4 speed tranny with a Pontiac rear end and gears in the high 4's (4:88?),but never got a full run in while I worked for him because he had drag slicks on the back of the car and a drag suspension that allowed him to really hook up,and he kept twisting the Pontiac axles.

I love the inlines for the sounds they make,as well as the torque they put out. I purposely sought out a stock factory 51 Ford business coupe with the original inline 6 in it to semi-restore because of this. V-8's were pretty easy to find, but it took me years to find one that was completely mechanically, had a clear title, and worth fixing. I already have a 3 carb intake for it,and am looking for a finned aluminum high compression head and cast iron headers to go with the 3/4 cam I will be putting in it. Ahhh, but the sounds that thing will make!

Same reason I am keeping a flat 6 Mopar engine in my 42 Dodge coupe.

In the spirit of full-disclosure,I have to admit that I  have a 6 carb 330 DeSoto hemi and push-button 727 to go in my 33 Plymouth coupe, though.

I have always been a big fan of the 49-51 Chev's,but I like the fastback 4drs best of all. It's falling off a log simple to put a 60's-70's 250 or 292 inline 6 in them, too. With the 292 you have the power of a V-8. Best of all, there is not much demand for them, and it's possible to pick up a nice original one fairly cheap.

      I really like the 53-54's,too. Don't much care for Chevy's after that,though.

  4. Are you by chance related to an old friend of mine named Bill Edge from Texas? Bill was an original member of the Army Golden Knights Sky Diving Team,a retired Special Forces SGM,and one hell of a nice guy. Never heard a bad word spoken of him by ANYBODY that knew him. He died of cancer a few years ago.

I didn't think you would be. The odds are too great. I just miss talking with him. We were friends in the army all the back to the mid-60's.

  5. Day 19. Getting along fine but have had to learn how to manage pain with ice.

"hot and icy". I will be brief! I noted to my surgeon and three PT's a very, very painful band around the sides and underside just above the incision. Doc and two PT's stated that, damage was not limited to the incision track. The 3rd PT explained that to hold the leg motionless and shut off all down arteries a giant CLA M P was put to use and that clamped area healed slowly. NO KIDDiNG. So last night at midnight I did a deep massage of that pain, then even more deeply redid that massage and added Hot and ICY for lubrication. I have completed this the second time, and will continue again at sun up!! The pain has already let up by 5 or 10 percent. Just the application of locker room 101 at work. It is horrifying to realize that my age group will take to our coffins or urns the magic of applied medicine and our grandkids will suffer under the results of Omama medical theory and under the control of pain by Lobb and Lamb! Thanks to Shak, now I'm beginning to smile also!!

Oxy is a VERY good thing at times, but let's not forget that pain is also your friend, and it provides you with an essential service. It reminds you that you are hurt or injured, and to take care to not make the injury worse.

A good rule of thumb to follow is to NEVER take any more pain killers than are absolutely necessary. We are all different people with different levels of pain tolerance,so nobody but you can tell you when it's more than you can deal with and you need some relief.

I can hear and "feel" mine "pop" sometimes while I am standing still.  I have to be careful how I move to keep from falling down.

Or did until a few days ago. Stepped on a cat sleeping in the hallway on my way to the toilet one morning with my eyes still half-closed,,and immediately jumped off to the side to try to keep from hurting the cat,and landed with my full body weight (and I now weigh 100 lbs more than I did in my prime) on both BENT knees. It hurt so bad it literally took my breath away.

There I was, stuck with my knees bent at about 45 degrees, and afraid to try to straighten up because I figured the pain would make me black out. Neither knee has bent that far in years. I have to grab ahold of something to get down on the floor to get on a creeper to get under a car,and I have to  have something to grab so I can pull myself back up on my feet again because there was no way my knees would hold my weight at that angle.

Since I had no choice,I straightened up after resting for a few moments, and damned if it wasn't painless.

Both knees bend now and I can put weight on them. There is still some "popping" going on occasionally with my left one,but they both bend far enough now that I can put my pants on normally and not have to use a pair of really long needle-nosed pliers to give me enough "reach" to get my foot started in the pants. Haven't been able to dress normally for at least 10 years.

Both knees hurt so badly last night I had a hard time sleeping, but I spent a few hours yesterday crouching, bending my knees to squat down, and sitting on my knees while working on and reassembling a tow behind mower out in the yard. They are/were just sore from so much use.  A week or so ago the only way I could have done the work I did yesterday was to work on it laying down,or use my tractor to pick it up and sit it on something at waist level.

I have no idea what actually happened unless I somehow "broke" the arthritis "crust" that was causing me so much pain and hindering my mobility. Since that makes no sense at all,I can't honestly say. I just know it was accidental,it hurt so much it took my breath away so I couldn't even scream, and now both of my knees have a almost normal range of movement.

I'm not kidding about the pain, though. If they start locking up on me again and I knew I could free them up again by jumping and landing with my knees bent,I don't think I could bring myself to do it. It's easier to deal with a manageable amount of pain every day than it is to deal with that much all at once.

A wise man once told me "Getting old ain't for sissies!" sure hit that one out of the ballpark.

When it comes to pain management, use whatever works and don't look back.

Try your best to avoid narcotics if at all possible, but don't hesitate to use them if nothing else seems to be working.

People who claim they are so tough they can deal with severe pain without narcotics have never had to deal with serious pain. There is a level of pain I call "I WANT MY MAMA",and you will know when you have reached that point without being told, and will take anything you can get to make it ease off no matter who you are.

The scariest and truest words you will ever hear is when a doctor tells you,"Now,this is going to hurt." They don't use those words lightly.

  9. Webster Radiator on rt 264 in Washington, NC may be able to help you.  I brought a radiator there several years ago to be repaired but they told me that the core was Swiss cheese and couldn't be soldered.  They could get a core for it, but it would have cost near $400 at the time.  I told them to forget it.  They do all kinds of Auto and truck work as well as repair radiators for Norfolk & Southern.

  11. Yes I had put on a new master cyl before.  I just brought home yesterday a 1999 Explorer 3.73 limited slip rearend and will work on getting that in when it warms up... I had been running the original one of 4.11.  We will see how the master cyl does when it has to work disc front and back both.  The car is modified so I can always put a new one on the firewall if I have too.   Dale

That's the way my 48 Ply coupe is. It has a Camaro frame clip,412 SBC,Turbo 350,and Camaro rear,so I can pretty much do anything to it I want without worry.

  12. Reg,let me know if you need a new pb booster. I have one that came with a 55 DeSoto I bought several years ago that had what I was told was a NOS PB booster and mastercylinder in the trunk. A guy I know that is a total Mopar freak tells me it was optional for DeSoto and Chrysler in 55,and very rare.

Have no idea if it is the same as the 56 or not,but if you are interested, let me know and I will sell it for considerably less than the 500 bucks that guy told me was a good buy price.

This guy is a skinny little geek that looks like a meth head down on his luck, but he has got some **** you have to see to believe, including an original 58 Chrysler convertible with the FI 392. Supposedly only 14 were made, and all of them but two were converted to dual quads after the recall.

He also has two 56 NY'er with standard shift from the factory.

Guy is dumb as a fence post about everything but 50's Mopars. Not even interested in anything else. Someone offered him a free 33 Plymouth coupe that had a 392 in it and had been sitting in a barn for 20 years, and he pulled the engine and sold the coupe to a junkard.

Ask him about a 50's Mopar part, and he can quote the parts number off the top of his head, though. Has a BUNCH of stuff, but drives a 73 half-ton Dodge 4x4 pu that is beat all to hell from running a half-mile up the unmaintained track he calls a road. He never drives any of them because he doesn't want anybody seeing and stealing them. Also,I suspect he doesn't want to pay taxes on them. He inherited a big ass farm and lets people share crop it,so he doesn't really give a damn about anything other than pleasing himself. If you are not talking about old cars, specifically 50's and early 60's Mopars,he has no interest in anything you are talking about. Guy is only in his 30's,too.

Only reason I know about him is I am friends with a 80 year old restorer and former drag racer that was friends with his father and grandfather.

His wife is pretty weird, too. Wears mens Sears work pants and shirts, and IIRC,collects and shows "show goats". I didn't even know there was such a thing. She got into the show goats because they raise and sell some sort of purebred horses, and for some reason horses love goats.

And here you were thinking all the strange people lived in Ca!

BTW,according to the guy I wrote about, there were 7 manual shift Chryslers sold in 56,and he has two of them. 3 on the tree.

Kinda makes my search for a Fordomatic bellhousing for my flathead 6 Ford seem reasonable, doesn't it?

As soon as I get the time. Other crap keeps happening, and I'm only good for about 4 hours on a good day. Had two water lines blow off under my kitchen sink last night, and ended up driving over 80 miles and through 3 counties to find the parts I needed to fix the leaks so I can shower and flush the toilet. Started out at 10:30 this morning and got the water turned back on just before dark. I'm bushed.

I am hoping nothing else goes wrong so I can get out in the shop and do a little work tomorrow. That's where the bumper and brackets are.
