  1. Actually, the fuel line fittings should seal without any sealant just by tightening them. You don't use a sealant on the rubber hose for the filter, just a clamp, and it doesn't leak.
  2. Tim, I'm with you. You've put that story up several years now. But.........it's still a good one, no matter how many times I see it.
  3. You're right. That gasket looks lifted on the one corner. That is probably why the vent lid isn't sitting straight. It's also probably why the vent leaked. Don't know how you'd fix that short of lifting the gasket and stretching it over and down tight on that corner. Do that and you'll probably fix both problems.
  4. Guess they haven't raised their prices much. As mentioned in that other thread, that's about what I paid back in 1998. Actually, when I called to order my kit back in 98 I was told they made the kits. So.......even if they didn't have them in stock, it probably wouldn't take long to get one from them.
  5. Ed, That was in 1998, got the car back running again in January 1999. Haven't had the manifolds off since. But........I have had the nut off (loose) on the first stud from the front of the engine. Had to loosen that one about 3 or 4 times going after the fuel pump since. Last time was this past summer when I replaced the fuel pump. Had to loosen it to get the heat shield off each time. At least that one has not been stuck once, and I don't need to use heat to get it loose.
  6. When I pulled my manifolds for rebuilding the engine, I had to replace at least 3 of the manifold studs. I used stainless studs to replace those three. Have had no problem with those studs. So.......don't think using stainless bolts to hold the manifolds would be a problem either.
  7. There's really not a lot of extra metal in that area to be drilling out too much.
  8. I would think you'd have about the same problem either way. The nuts would still freeze up on the bolts. Then if you have to remove the long bolts for some reason like resurfacing, the bolts would still be stuck in the intake. Maybe a better solution would be to use stainless steel bolts to hold the two together.
  9. I don't think so. My bolts just slipped through the exhaust manifold, then were threaded into the top half of the intake. When they snapped, they did so because they were stuck in the intake part, not the exhaust part. Had to re-thread one of those holes once apart.
  10. Well........I would think a headliner like that would be a good way to get the women to stay away from you.
  11. This guy must have seen the same movie I did years ago. A couple of low life's were riding around in their car. The whole inside of the car had Playboy and Penthouse posters plastered all over the headliner, dash, door panels etc. This guy must have seen the same movie and took it to heart.
  12. Robert, Actually, your heat riser is supposed to move freely. Usually they don't need replacing unless they will not move.
  13. Robert, I paid about $45 or $50 with the shipping for my riser kit from Antique Auto Cellar back in the late 90's. That price also included 4 new bolts that hold the manifolds together.
  14. Guess there are only 86 people on the forum that actually owns cars.
  15. Well.......I took the broken spreader tool back a little while ago. Showed it to the guy and he just shook his head in disbelief. Said he'd have a new spreader for me Wednesday. Didn't even need the receipt.
  16. After seeing your last post decided to take a look at the coupe price. You're right Bob, those things have jumped in price. I can remember it wasn't long ago you could get them for $25 and $30 at the local model shows. I never did buy one then either. I'm waiting for the die cast model to come out so I don't have to putz with putting it together.
  17. I don't have a convertible, but..... Wouldn't the size of the pins or bolts be listed in the 42 Parts Book? I know in the P15 parts book it shows all the attaching parts (bolts, nuts, etc.) for just about every part on the car. Maybe if someone has a parts manual for the 42, they could try looking it up.
  18. Don, do what one of my neighbors do to make some money legally while in Florida. Every year he heads for Florida right after the first of the year and stays there until about the end of March. His van is packed to top with old flea market stuff. He sells that while down there at the flea markets. He also buys more stuff while down there and hauls it back here. Then he hits the flea markets up here and sells stuff. So.........he makes his money in both places.
  19. I was laughing pretty good too when I started reading your post. Actually, a lot of retired people do that here in Wisconsin too. They usually buy a time share condo and hit Florida for a month or three every winter. Personally, I'd rather stay here and rough it out for the winter. It's not all that bad. Worse part about winter in my opinion is the daylight hours are too short. I think that's the part I dislike about winter the most. Going to a warm climate isn't going to change that.
  20. Actually, any time it gets to 5 or 10 degrees above here it's not all that bad. Just a nice winters day then. But.......as Fred said, when it's below zero it can get bad, especially when it gets that cold and windy. You see people wearing face masks when it gets that cold. However, I can't wear anything over my nose and mouth when it's that cold. The steam from your breath gets on the mask and turns it to ice almost instantly. I think those things make you colder instead of keeping you warmer.
  21. What is weather? "It's something that everyone loves to talk and complain about, but no one does anything about it." And Tim, what is a negative temperature? "It's a very cold temperature. "It really doesn't matter how many degrees it is when it's a negative temperature. It's just plain cold and time to hibernate.":D If you do go out, minus 10 feels just as cold as minus 50, so it really doesn't matter how cold it is then. Again, it's just plain cold. I've found that not thinking about how cold it is, it doesn't feel as cold.
  22. Merle, now you are sounding like my son.:D Of course I had the nut on the terminal all the way out as far as it would go, without taking it off completely. That said, my terminal was so tight you could not get the spreader all the way in at first. I had to do it several times, each time getting the terminal a little further apart to get it deeper onto the spreader. It was the final spread when all the way down that the handle broke. But.....it did spread the terminal while breaking. So.........at least I got that one done. I could still turn the nut on the terminal easily with my fingers after that final spread. So.....it wasn't due to the nut being too tight on the terminal. As for cleaning the terminals and post, I have three of those brush tools around. Keep one in the trunk, one in the garage and the third one was just given to me about 2 weeks ago. In my opinion, the brush works better for cleaning the terminal than than the spreader/cleaner does. That spreader/cleaner gets hung up inside the terminal when you try to twist to clean. Tried that out before trying to spread the terminal. Back in the 60's we use to simply use a pocket knife to clean both, the terminal and post. That worked good too. I've never had a problem with the pliers or channel locks getting the terminals off the post. But.........I always do it gently. If you grab with the pliers or channel locks and use brute force, I guess you could do damage to the post, but I take my time and do it slowly and gently.
  23. dezeldoc, Thanks for the link, but........I'm not a mechanic by trade. Not about to spend 50 bucks for those things. The KD was high enough for what they are at $24.50 for occasional usage. I've had other KD specialty tools that lasted for years. This was probably just a defective one, so will just exchange it Monday. For pulling cables I've always used a pair of pliers or channel locks without a problem.
  24. Joel's Walmart story brought back memories. Would just like to share part of those memories with everyone. It's was a real eye opener for me at the time. Years ago, my first wife worked for JC Penny's. They also had a giving tree like I mentioned at our church, and one like Joel mentioned. But........in addition, each year the employee's of JC Penny would go out in groups of four. Usually, husband and wife teams. We would take an artificial tree and gifts to about 3 homes each in area's no one would normally want to go at night. They were all in the poor slum area's of the city. You would not believe how some of these family's with their children live, until you've seen it first hand. I remember going into dumpy homes (apartments) that we wouldn't let our pets live in, much less people or children. Walk down dark dimly lit sidewalks between buildings falling apart. Then climb up the stairs that have no lights in them to see which step is next. Once you get in the kitchen, the only heat is that from the kitchen stove. It's not only cool in the apartment, but it smells of natural gas from the kitchen stove burning with the over door open and all burners going. Then in the dining room, instead of a table, chairs etc., there are just mattresses laying on the floor for the kids to sleep on. No bed, just the mattress without sheets. They maybe had one cover on the mattress to keep warm. Then of course, there is no tree until we put it up. The living room is empty with no TV in most cases. So........when you see those giving trees as Joel and I mentioned, that is usually where your gift to that person/family is going. Someplace like I described above. If it wasn't for those giving trees, etc., these people would have no Christmas presents to open. Not only that, they may be lucky to put a bowl of Campbells tomato soup on the table as Christmas dinner. Just thought I'd share my first hand experience from years ago. It's hard for people like us that are fortunate enough to have a little something to really comprehend just how hard some people have it everyday, until you've actually seen it first hand. So........every little bit one can do to help in someway, especially this time of year, means a lot to people in need.
  25. Merle, Thanks for the offer. Actually, there's a retired mechanic who lives about 6 or 8 blocks away. He offered to loan his to me last summer sometime. But.......like other tools, I like to have my own. Kept putting this little task off though until a week or so ago. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to return these for exchange at the parts store Monday. Will just have to wait a day or so for them to get another pair. They don't stock them in the store. I was just shocked I broke them by just squeezing them to open that one terminal. They were probably just defective to begin with. After all, as you know, I'm no Charley Atlas. Luckily I still have the receipt, plus the two guys that run the store near me know me anyway. They don't even make me prepay to special order anything.
