  1. I wonder how much of the frightening noises we think our flatheads are making is from the fan? We have gotten used to well insulated, well sealed cars with electric fans. So our old cars and trucks probably more so transmit more noise than we are used to. wind noise, tire noise, engine noise tranny noise, are all pretty much taken out of the equation on our modern cars. As far as real life rpms go, most contemporary cars are gearde to be turning just over 2000 rpm at higway cruising speed. My curent car a VW Jetta with a5pseed, is HP rated at 3750 rpms. It has a 4.25 diffy and only a .86 OD in 5th gear, at 70mph its cranking out 3400 rpm. Pretty close to the 85% deal of HP rpm. Seams Happy, gets about 35/6 mpg on trips. I know its much shorter stroke than our old 6's but our old engines should live at 3000-3200 rpm cruise for a long time.
  2. It not the guys that are doing the confusing, it was mother Crysler that laid the fluid drive name on a whole mess of differnet power transfer units from standard three speeds to Semi automatics. Kinda like George Forman's kids. If it says safety clutch then it likely is indeed a Tip Toe semi auto in a DeSoto. Gyromatic was Dodge, and Fluid Torque Drive was Chryslers. For areal good primer on the Semi automatic behind the fluid coupler go to the imperial clubs website and check the information in their tech section. They have scanned copies of thechnicians handbooks dealing with trouble shooting and rebuilding the units.
  3. Well it not yellow but it looks like an early version of the line of special builts road racers from the early 50 that were know as old yeller.
  4. Hey Rodney, I think that Pink may be your color. Didn't know Mary Kay was in business back in the early 50's. Wonder if that radiator would fit in my studie truck? Joe if you are going back take a look around for any Studebaker trucks. The stuff looks fairly rust free, I could use a drivers side door, a radiator, and a couple interior door panels.
  5. We had a sunny 40+ degree day here today (supposed to turn to crap tomorrow, the famous wintery mix) I might have taken the coupe for a spin as the roads were dry. However they are covered with salt dust from a couple of heavy applications last week. So not wanting to reintroduce my car to sodium chloride after 30 years, I decided against it.
  6. I believe a bucket is a bucket at least for 7 inch sealed beams. Head lights were one of the things that the DOT mandated and other than mounting place and height requirements I believe they are all pretty much the same. Except for perhaps the number of mounting screws. Those in you picture look a lot like the ones on my bench out of the 56 Pickup, and the ines under the bench from the 60 Bugeye, and the extra one from a P15.
  7. So the local Catholic Diocese has closed several churches due to lack of clergy to staff them. There was a story on the news about the fact that the Bishop sent one of his minions and a sheriff's deputy, to one of the closed churches in a nearby village, to evict some folks who were holding a vigil and keeping the building open. A couple folks were removed by threat of arrest, the doors were locked and NO TRESPASSING signs were affixed to the doors. We happened to go by the other day and spotted the signs. Almost unbidden the thought came into my head that I should have a sign made the says "Forgive us our Trespasses", and attach it below the signs some evening. My wife says NO! but I keep coming back around to the fact it needs doing. Whaddya think????
  8. All this enthusiasm from a Chevy guy???? Even though you have strayed from the flock, I echo your sentiments. I will add that each and every one of the participants of this forum that I have met have been fine upstanding characters, who would give you the shirt of their backs if you asked.
  9. You used to be able to get cast iron welding rod for arc welders. If anybody had that rod it is just the thing for cast manifolds.
  10. I believe Ford and Jauguar have parted ways. I do recall a visit to my wifes car dealer for service. It is a Subaru Jaguar store owned by a pontiac dealer. I was killing time in the showroom looking at an X 6 sedan. The prototypical upscale import sales guy came up and asked if I was interested in the JAg. I said not really if iwas going to spend that much money I would just buy 2 Tauruses. He got bit irritated as asked what I meant. So I pointed out the switch panels, radio, heater controls, power windows and doors buttons. He said they weren'f from a Ford. So spotting a used Taurus on the lot, I felt it was my duty to educate him. Even when confronted by the exact same pieces he coldn't accept they were from a Ford. Apparently his Jaguar certified sales associate training hadn't covered the Ford Jaguar connection. I invited him to look it up as I returned to the service area. And how about those supposidely independent thinker engineers and designers at Saturn, getting paid to change trim and badges on all those Opels?? Pehaps they developed a new mounting system or new adhesive for double sided tape. Wonder if the Saturn guys think their roadster is an improved version of the Pontiac vibe? I believe it is a detuned version of the Opel GT. Or the new Small Suv is an in house product? At least the Vue now has a GM engine, they gave up buying the Honda V6 last year. And how come those Isuzu trucks look so much like Chevys?
  11. you can also try a water spritz bottle to mist the wrinkeld area then work it with a hair dryer. Don't really soak it and don't over heat it but by wetting and warming and woking the area with your hands you should be able to get rid of most and minimize the big ones. If it't vinyl just work it with the hair dryer. Don't get the dryer to close as it will overheat and shut off till it cools.
  12. If the pieces are not completely seperated, the manifold can be welded. Grind the area well, then drill a small hole at each end of the crack. the hole will stop the crack from extending. Then grind the crack itself to form a "V" shape. Then the crack can be welded. An experience welder will be able to fill the "V" and effect a solid and reliable repair. It can then be ground smooth and flat.
  13. Yep, it's getting hard to tell which are fords, which are mazdas and which are volvos. Fusion~mazda 6 TaurusX~Volvo xc70 Focus~Volvo S40, Volvo C30, Mazda 3 Escape~Mazda Tribute
  14. Some places sell and economy grade rated at 86. While on this, I think the rest of the world uses a different rating scale than we do. Research Vs Motor octane ratings One value is the research octane number (RON), which is determined with a test engine running at a low speed of 600 rpm. The other value is the motor octane number (MON), which is determined with a test engine running at a higher speed of 900 rpm. If, for example, a gasoline has an RON of 98 and a MON of 90, then the posted octane number would be the average of the two values or 94.
  15. The seat covers come up on ebay from time ot time. I believe there is a fellow who had a bunch of them and he put them up regularly. You can go to a bodyshop and ask them to match the paint and make you up a small amount. Just be prepared autopaint these days is very expensive. 90 bucks a gallon is a low starting point.
  16. You might try taking up some of the slack with the adjustoment on the sterring box. On the top of the box you will see a lock nut a star wheel, and a bolt with a slot in it. Remove the lock screw loosen the star wheel a about 4 turns and then turn the cloted bolt clock wise about a turn or two, see if that makes any difference. If it does, screw the star down, and fasten the lock nut. Don't go too far as you don't want to put alot of stress on it Also check the mounts from the box to the frame mounts. They have rubber bolt isolators that deteriorate and get sloppy, allowing the box to twist before it imparts motion to the linkage.
  17. Do you folks get the Dodge Dakota pick up over there??? they make a good donor for front frame. Carry all the good stuff like discs, power R&P. Motor mounts for a good variety of engines. Also there is a fellow around here with the earlier Dodge truck (40 through 47 style), mounted on a Ford Ranger, Mazda B series pick up frame. He said it was a virtual bolt up deal except for some fussing with the front sheet metal mounts. Perhaps either of those would be a good clip donor also.
  18. There are several deal like Dyna mat being sold, most is cut peal and sitck. Last year, I bought some stuff to insulate my furnace ducts running through my garage. It is a cellular foil deal that installs with a pressure sensitive tape, gonna use it on the underside of the roof and rear of the cab, and maybe on the floor. I also have some of that roofing membrane that goes on the edge of the roof that is peel and stick also. I am planning it on using the inside of the firewall. And there is that spray / on roll on lizard skin stuff that has been mentioned in a positive light on a couple other boards.
  19. Say nice looking house and homestead. So you are denying having Transylvanian tyrants in your ancestory, and then you bring up dismembered heads on spikes. I for one am not convinced...... And aren't those things called haycocks in some parts of the world (GB most likely)
  20. The easiest way to do 12 V these days is to go with a GM single wire alternator. You will need to modify the lower mounting bracket but it is doable with stuff from the hardware store. this eliinate the need for the Voltage regulator. You can also retain the 6 V starter as they are built heavier than the 12V and will take the extra voltage with no problems. You can even use the stock solenoid, it may last a good lng time or you can switch out to a 12V from just about any 70 or 80's 12V Ford. You will need to change all you light bulbs and put a voltage dropper on the radio circuit if you want to run the stock radio. The wire from the alternator simply connect to the wire on the BAT terminal of the current Votlage regulator once it is disconnected fromt he regulator. You also want to change the leads ont he back of the ammeter and run your 12 V negative ground. The stock electrice are 6 V positive ground. But why change? Unless you are going to run modern 12v accessories, a well maintianed 6 V system will suti your car well. Make sure the grounds are all good and tight, and that your primary battery cables are nice thick 1 gauge or 0 gauge and it shuld be fine. As far as the trunk lid is concerned. Your model is a club coupe, there was another coupe with a different rear end and roof line that was know as the business coupe. We just did this for Plymouths and found the trunk lids are unique to each model. The though was that the trunklid for the coupes and convertibles were the same. The parts book says otherwise at least for Plymouth. Knowing Chrysler practices Dodge is likely to be the same. Good luck with you car looks like a good starting point. Does it say fluid drive onthe dashboard or rear bumper? If you are not familiar with Dodges fluid drive system you might want to check out the All Par site transmission section. Also take a look at the Imperial Club site and check out the maintenence area. But if you park you car on a incline make sure your parking brake is working or block the tires, otherwise your car might take a little trip of it own accord. There are several sources for flathead go fast goodies. Split maniflds intake and exhaust, high compresion heads are available on the web occasionally etc. You might consider using a 2bbl carburetor with an adapter on you stock manifold. and the easiest way to get a bit more umph is to mill the head. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your project. Up o the top of this page, there is a hot button in the header that says reurn to P15-D24. You might want to check out all the information available there regarding this fine group of automobiles. Lots of good stuff. technical stuff, how to's, parts lists parts sources. etc.
  21. Help has both those items. the parts store can probably get them for you. I'm going to need a spring form one of my in the truck. Try a couple other store in the area, I think Pep oyz had them on the rack last time I was there.
  22. Adams you are a funny guy!!! Sick, but funny........
  23. Is the noise audible or just through the radio??? On my wife's Subaru the alternator has started a bit of a hum at idle. No noise on the radio but under the hood you can hear it.
  24. I understand they charge an admission fee to look around. It is "cheerfully refunded" or creditied to your purchase should make one.
