  1. i once gave my opel for a video shoot of a good friend of my girl, who's working for some weird label. they were carrying the car on hands, couldn't actually believe that they found one for free. i got a free load of gas for it and did a favour to a friend. i really hate the music though, the video is complete nonsense, but when it came to selling the car people were impressed when i told them the car was on MTV... i wouldn't give it to anyone, though, that's for sure. here, "enjoy"...
  2. unknown parts are just great! some can be used as something completely different, some can be put on the bay (rare vintage retro rad rot hot rod) and sometimes you really find out what they once were! i found a box with some signal flashers in a trash can once, and they turned out to be for a 50s mercedes 7,5ton truck, NOS! made some good money with them, years later.
  3. i am sure you're right, but i would try getting a car with less mods on it, looks like this one has gotten a front clip at some part (front axle, break, steering column) and you can't say how good this was done. it's no problem dealing with rust and age, but it's always a real pain to clean up after other people before you get to the real restoring (if that is what you want to do with this one). might be easier to set the body on a modern frame and hop it up. i don't know just how rare they really are, that might be important i admit... (just the "next fred's" 2 cents)
  4. wow, you could eat from that. nice and clean! after fighting the rust on my headers in my old opel for about a year i gave up and decided to go back to rusty oily stuff... where do i get those tiny stickers you got everywhere?
  5. that's what i thought:) i've seen the metal ones on one of the links above (thanks for them...!), they look pretty solid. expensive, sure, and you have to buy the hardware and seals extra, but i think i would not go for fiber glas. number one reason for buying this kind of car. but i guess you can better work on the metal ones if they don't fit exactly. (not me personaly but i'll find someone:o )
  6. what is that steering wheel? (..and did it come with the "excellent" flame job)
  7. the good thing about the oil bath filters is you don't have to fear backfire that much. i like them because they're so old fashioned, like all the other service stuff you have to do (maybe with a beer on a warm summer evening...hmmm.) i can't wait to clean mine:) can get pretty dirty though, i admit.
  8. it would be smoking blue like hell if there was this much oil in there, wouldn't it? a flatty's head gasket isn't so hard to change, i guess... i would try that anyway. then you can take good look into every cylinder, check for damage and everything. imagine you get in half-fixed now, get on the road for a "clean-out" and end up sitting on the side lane with a blown engine:eek:
  9. thanks, bill, i'll write you in a minute! i think its quite hard to find a good shaped skirt for a 40 fender, those 2 parallel lines in the side of the fender don't really go well with a teardrop shape, i think. on the other hand, the roof line... hm. i have been playing around in photoshop for a while, but i am still not convinced of this. plus, fiberglas will be quite hard to "patinize", and i'll have to do that because i want to keep the cars fine look. would be a crime to paint here. i'll open my own thread for that next time:o sorry for intruding...
  10. ..and they all have a factory topchop! *cars doubled in size by artist. real appearence may differ* great ads!
  11. yes, i think so, too. the smilie was just about me introducing here by using term i didn't know what it was meaning. we have these terms in germany as well, and most people don't really know what they are saying. for example we do not have a "sedan", only limousines. but that has nothing to do with the original meaning as well. or in one of the last posts, the "drophead"... 100s of things one doesn't know yet.
  12. ok, so a 2doored not-a-ford shouldn't be called tudor... i am going to edit my first post about my car... thanks!
  13. great story! this is one thing that won't happen to me with the german TÜV... dutch street law seems so much more relaxed to me. have fun with your new toy! 440... hmmm. :-)
  14. tim, this is interesting to me, i always thought "tudor" would be kind of slang for 2-door, but of course english is not native to me. what does it really mean, i'd like to know that! thanks...
  15. wow, they really have skirts for 37-40... does anyone have a photo of a 40 or 41 sedan with skirts on? i wonder what it looks like, because the rear ends of the fenders are higher than the ends on the running board side.
  16. ...do not be shy. please tell me this is a joke!
  17. this thread is just what i needed... will help me a lot on the lowering topic! so, what you said about the shocks is that a pair of gas types, like from kanters for example, wouldn't fit the standart setup? i will go scan ebay now for a pair of mounts:)
  18. thanks for all your tips! just been there again, had a look at the car. i guess it will be the best to cut a little off the front springs, like you said, and then see where it gets me. maybe a little more... step by step. i am going to order blocks in the us, i am now lower in the front than in the back, and i don't like this at all! that's more of a 60s look, doesn't go well with a 40 body i think. now if you all who cut your springs don't have steering problems, i am going to do that as well. i'll send my old ones to a shop to make new ones just like those, but shorter and with more stiffness (or what is that called... ). i'll send you some photos when i'm done! here's what it looks like now:
  19. good to know, i want to keep the drums as well. after all, it's a cruiser to me, i dont want to race it, so a well tuned drum setup is all i need. i thought about maybe getting a pair new springs produced, should be possible under 400$ and would solve more than one problem. i heard about tire "grinding" and bumpsteering though, thats why i asked about cutting the front springs up. i guess i can't get 4" without spending a little more money and work on the chassis... i lowered my 69 opel over 4" just with shortened springs, but that seems impossible here.
  20. i have read that one as well, but i was wondering if you absolutely have to do it this way. this looks like a major operation to me with the new upper shock mounts welded in and everything... pretty expensive, too, i bet. nice work there, though.
  21. i have it running on 6.00"x16" and i already bought new WWs, so i want to keep it that way. besides i like those when they sit deep inside the wheel housing. what about your steering, does everything work correctly although you cut the front springs? i heard about problems with the geometrics here. i want to go as low as possible without frame mods.
  22. couldn't this be done for earlier models, too? and if so, can i order it somewhere?
  23. i have now looked at the drawings of my front end and the rest of the chassis for quite some time, and i have been googling around and measuring the tires and reading a lot about other car's chassis... but i still haven't figured out the best way to get my car as close to the ground as possible at a resonable price. what do you think, how do i do this? what do i need? blocks, dropped spindles, short spirals, what about the shocks.... help! since i am doing an axle rebuild anyway i don't want to buy everything twice...
  24. ...doesn't really belong here, but are there any skirts for '40 ply sedans? must have...
