  1. Thanks you guys. The headlight dimmer Switch was gonna be my first stop!
  2. Well, every one was correct. Battery cables!!!! Generator changes, most of the lights work, no headlights, but fan works, windshield wipers.....i was impressed!!!!!! Still gotta figure out the headlights and radio..... But who cares, generator and regulator both work.... And just to think..... the guy we bought it from sold it to us with the idea that the motor was frozen solid!!

    Noises?

Obviously other than tearing the front of the motor apart.
  4. 49wind

    Noises?

Is there anyway to test to verify?

    Noises?

To be honest out sounds centrally located. But more so from the passenger front of the engine.... at least that's what my ear hears

    Noises?

Thanks! But where or what would produce such a noise?

    Noises?

So, Does a 1949 Chrysler windsor spitfire engine timing chain make noise? I have no idea....i can only explain it as a noise that sounds like a chain on a chain saw.
  8. 60% of the time.... it works every time. Ha ha
  9. Got the crusty broken lower shock mounts out. Bought the dorman 31001 universal shock mount studs. But the stud part of it was way to short Could only get 3 or 4 threads to bite. So...... thank goodness for an angle grinder!!!
  10. Uncle-Pekka, The ammeter clicks all the the time. (Ir shows in the discharge side) Unless I rev it up... then it stops ( and the ammeter shows zero)
  11. Does anyone know the length of the cables off hand? And what length of ground straps?
  12. Could the generator need to be polarized after sitting for so long?
  13. Would it be a good idea to clean up all the posts of the generator....and take.the regulator off and clean up the firewall behind? I've read that can be a grounding point.
  14. I've got it hooked up positive ground currently.
  15. Greetings all! So here is my issue. My wife and I bought a 1949 Chrysler windsor sedan....ensign blue. After cleaning the carb and putting new gaskets in it....i was able to get it to start. But it turns over so slow....a 6 volt battery just doesn't seem to cut it. Even bought a brand new 6 volt battery...it just goes....uh.......uh...................uh. if you get my drift. That's one issue. Ive read running a ground strap from block to firewall helps. Does it help that much?! Second issue.... none of the lights work. I'm worried that someone prior to us had the same uh.......uh.................uh issue and put a 12 volt battery in it to get it to turn over faster.....at this point would it be more cost effective to chase down every light or just swap to 12v system? Which leads me to my last issue. When I was able to get the car started after many uh.........uh......ughs.......the altimeter or charging guage or whatever you wanted to call it....was halfway into the negative...and it was clicking....when I revved the motor it would move closer to zero.....which makes me wonder if the generator is bad or the regulator is bad or both..... I'm just lost. Trying to get the car finish for a car show in June. And so my wife can drive it to work every now and then. Any help is very much appreciated!
  16. UPDATE- I lucked out. Got brave tonight and attempted to loosen the top shock mount bolts. And they loosened right up. One side the nut had to cut through the rust. But it came off pretty decently. The bottom shock mount on the passenger side. The nut striped on the bolt. So I had to cut it off too. Now I'm stuck again. Gonna have to drill it out.

  18. Well sure! Now all that is stopping me us about 1/2 inch of steel. Oh and some old under coating. Haha that might be the other reason why I haven't tackled the tops yet....i don't know if I'm reason to light the car aflame just yet!
  19. Ebruns1...... you make me nervous. I snapped off my lower mount on my 49 chrysler....and haven't attempted the top mount yet. What did you do? Out of curiosity... just in case?
  20. UPDATE: Well after a couple heat cycles, I couldn't get a wrench on the nut to try to break it loose. So I cut off the length up to the nut. Then I was able to get a 7/8ths impact socket and a breaker bar on the nut. Gave it a heat cycle again. And put a little pressure on the breaker bar. And I felt it move! Heck yea! Put some more pressure on the breaker bar....SNAP! twisted off right behind the nut. Well I didn't get it out...now I'm just gonna have to drill it out. Oh well at least I tried. And the heat cycles worked great on the front shocks! No problems!!! Took 15 minutes to swap both sides. I haven't tried to do the rear passenger side. I suppose I'm a little gun any now. But the 49 windsor needed new shocks for sure. I was able to compress the fronts and the one rear easily... And it's been 4 hours and they haven't rebounded back. I'll post again if the job gets completed this weekend. It's cold up here in north dakota. Almost the middle of April and they are talking more snow. BOO!!!!
  21. I hope you are right! I hope to attack it over the next few days! Thanks for your help plymouthy adams! Much appreciated!
  22. I watched a you tube video of a guy with a jeep. He used these https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-15530-31001.aspx Same thing! If I cut the nut off, will the rest unbolt?
  23. Yea that's what I was leaning towards. But does the whole stud unscrew from where it is? Behind the nut I mean?
  24. Fair enough Plymouthy Adams! I ran outside and snapped a photo.
