  1. Yes i agree with gregg good info on that site, i know you have used 3 different condensers, i have little faith in new condensers i always buy NOS at swap meets to keep on hand.
  2. I did that so it was easier to compare base timing through advance timing with a timing light. I disconnect the vacuum advance and plugged it, going through different rpms compared the mechanical advance to the manual. Flyweights could be seized. Then at idle using a vacuum pump checked the vacuum advance for timing against manual and it gave me an idea if the dizzy is working close to what it should. You should start with static timing and the adjust with a vacuum gauge to get idle correct then work towards the advancing after.
  3. Manifold vacuum, highest steady vacuum means the timing is good, on my car i marked 6 degrees in red 10 degrees 15 degrees with blue. Once i set rhe idle vacuum which came out around 6 with the gauge then i accelerate under hood and watch the vacuum advance and compared it the the book compared to the rpm and that may tell you how the mechanical advance and vacuum advance is working.
  4. I agree see how it steers when jacked up. Another easy check is first take the tie rod on the drivers side off and check it with the steering wheel then take the drag link off the drivers spindle and check it again and then jack it up and turn each wheel by hand. That way you separate each side and the gear box and you should be able to tell what is binding.

I agree with sniper on the title, just a thought but i think this is been several post named HDC and if anyone is trying the search function using title as a parameter then none of you post would show up. Just a thought.
  6. I figured so, i like using star washers on grounds like that. It looks a little rusty maybe something to clean it and protect it. Glad you found it.
  7. I see the title performance vs reliability, with that said the easy performance upgrades are dual exhaust manifolds, shave the head .05-.07 and the rebuild. New pistons may be needed. Thats reliable now you can add dual carbs and reground cam but i think that can get expensive quickly. The best upgrade is brakes and rear end as mentioned. With the taller rear gears(i used a jeep rearend, easy change and lots of info here) a fresh engine is the best way to utilize the speed increase.
  8. Just to eliminate that type of a problem i would just give the starter solenoid a permanent ground and see if there is a difference
  9. I also remember that my 49 starter solenoid was grounded through the generator to prevent it cranking while the car qas already running. This was advanced thinking by the Chrysler corporation. You now have an alternator so how has that been rewired. May be related may not.
  10. Thats why you only had 6.4 during charge. A charger would normally put out 6.7-7.0 volts depending on the charger and the state of the battery.
  11. Yes, and I have the jack and the two tire spoons and the tool for the split rim. Oh and the crank.
  12. The firing order is always the same, just because the rotor is pointed somewhere else doesn't change the position or order of your pistons. You just start the firing order wherever your rotor is as long as you are tdc on one that's where your rotor points. Technically it can be anywhere. The factory spot is 7.
  13. I also am in search of the correct tool kits for my 29 mainly for show and not for use.?
  14. I learned 3+9 at the tender age of 5 by my oie man. He was backwoods, and dangerous mostly. But that he taught me and I'm sure there was a story behind it.
  15. Well I can tell you my 29 DeSoto has one, (but if course it is a flathead screwdriver pipe screw which makes it fun to remove) so I would think they had the hole since the beginning of close to it.
  16. That is the firing order on 95+% of all straight 6 engines including diesels
  17. I'm hoping to visit the show next year. It's a 4.5 hour drive from here with a normal vehicle so it would be without my car. 45 mph is a comfortable speed with the ol 29.
  18. I hate napa, their prices are high and electrical sucks. Just my opinion, but around here they have smarter people behind the counter. I like all pro. They do me right. But as said before rock auto will surprise you and the shipping has been quick lately.
  19. Yes quite the history session. My headliner is a map of route 66
  20. I agree with rich mark the dizzy to where the rotor is pointed. Life happens, parts don't and memories fail. Piece of tape would work well. It won't wipe off with oily fingers
  21. Running, what for. The 29 gets me where I got to go. My little man loves the car. He would rather ride in that than mommy's new car in the background. The cutlass. Smart boy.
  22. Brought the 29 DeSoto to the lake for sunset tonight. Started right up. Still has a stumble on acceleration but it was fun to get out with it.?
  23. I want rural area. But I also want to have a small garage business of repairing old cars. We are only 50, the wife's pension is a nice sized one that she can collect at 55. So we are looking to get easy minimal jobs and collect the pension. Just start winding down you know. We were just in Tennessee checking it out, and liked the pigeon forge area. But wasn't to impressed with the Bristol Kingsport Johnston area. But on our drive back to New York we stopped in wytheville Virginia and loved it.
