    In a previous thread I showed how I made a brake adjustment tool using a length of steel tubing, some all-thread and a piece of angle. The tool worked fairly well but had some inherent imprecision due to the tubing not being a real tight fit on the axle threads. This was really obvious on the rear axles due to the threads being worn. I've modified the tool and it now works very nicely and accurately. Instead of the all-thread being welded to steel tube, it is welded to a 3/4"-16 nut. This removes any significant play in the indicator. Before removing the wheel drum, one minor cam adjuster is tightened enough to create noticeable drag on the drum. The drum is then removed and the brake tool is threaded onto the axle. The pointer is located over the portion of the shoe that contacted the drum which indicates the ID of the drum and adjusted for a snug fit on the shoe. If you want to get really fancy a 0.006" feeler gauge can be inserted between the pointer and shoe. I tried chalking the shoe to assist with indicating the high point during the initial adjustment but didn't find it to be of any advantage. Notice how these brand new shoes have not yet worn enough to have full contact with the drum. I'll readjust the brakes after some miles have accumulated on the shoes. Once the pointer is adjusted to match the high point of the shoe that was adjusted against the drum, the tool is swept over each shoe so the major and minor cam adjustments can be set so each shoe is concentric with the drum. Hopefully this will remove some of the mystery of adjusting the brakes and provide visual confirmation of proper adjustment.

    1955 C1B Build Thread

    I remember....it was 2006.....I was at a historical drag strip, Kingdon Drags, running in the nostalgic weekend event. I was lined up against a 1940's coupe..stock rims and tires or sorts...looked real vintage...a rat rod of sorts. I was in my 1972 Charger Stock car which has an aggressive look and feel...500hp 408 stroker with medium open headers. Sounded mean. His flat six was chirping away, sweating bullets and shaking like a fearful contender. Secretly I liked his ride and hoped he'd put up a decent fight. Then I noticed my timing....it was jumping. It turned out later that my distributor shaft was bent. As we pulled off the line, the light brilliantly green, the engine began to sigh, and go flat, running, but lacking in effort. It was as if his L6 had made a deal with my V8....."let me win this straight line, and I'll tow your stuff to the oval track for a week" He won, and I was concerned about my engine. Later a friend of mine said that the crowd went nuts "The old car is gonna WIN!!!!!! My friend new something was a foul, but it was too much fun cheering for the old iron....he had cheered against me. lol I told him "I didn't let him win...he showed up and raced...he deserved the win" I never told anyone of circumstance that my engine had failed.....it wasn't the flat 6's fault my engine was toast....he showed up to race. And I bet you to this day, he still talks about beating a 500hp 408 stroker in a raced prepped 72 Charger with his very special L6 Flattie. Cheers brother. 48D

    "Ol Blue" Build

    Hello Guys - I've been busy, got a few updates: first thing was the gas tank leak. I chose to take the inexpensive route first, I bought a tank refurb kit from Amazon made by POR (ive had great luck with their chassis paint) so I thought I'd give it a shot. Followed the directions to the letter and put tank back in truck last week. no leaks so far. Truck started up and drove great. I still need to replace the rear end as Merle suggested in this link, I've got to go find a set of 373s. The engine over heat appears to be good to go following the clean up, machining of head, and new head gasket. I also replaced my running boards, I had a set that were 4 inches too short and had installed a spacer. found a set that were about the same too long but bought them anyway, bent them back to shape, chased all threads, cut them down and welded them to size. installed and they look good. Also my truck did not have a rear bumper, I was going to make one out of box steel but decided to cut down and cut the curved ends off my parts truck front bumper, so I shortened it welded it up built a bracket and popped that on today. whatdya think?

    G'day. I found your site just now so I thought I would slip in while no one is looking. I have this 1955 D49 Aussie built Kingsway in pretty good nic, not the hemi only a flat six. Im not going to mod it to much just tyres and rims and set her low. so any suggestions on wheel and tyre widths would be appreciated. Cheers

    New Car Day! 1938 P6 Plymouth Deluxe

    Did the deal on this one today. 1938 P6. Great known history. Solid car. Original interior. D24 engine installed but comes with original P6 engine needing rebuild. Lots of spare parts! Good runner. Test drove it. Looking forward to getting into this car. No plans other than make it reliable, road worthy and safe. Picked up in Victoria BC Canada. I will trailer it home next Saturday.

    We and the Windsor 2018

    Out for an evening cruise tonite. I hung out in the back seat with my Mother-in-Law. Let my son drive. His girlfriend in the centre. My Mrs. on the right. The back seat is so comfortable! Lots of leg room, shoulder space and headroom. I will welcome more time in the back. The centre fold down arm rest, so regal. A round of ice creme for all.

    A new one on me!

    Thought I knew a bit about cars. Found out I have a few gaps in my knowledge. My 24 dodge brothers clutch was dragging and chattering when I take off. Thought resurfacing it was in order. Being a multiple disk clutch, similar to a motorcycle, I knew it was going to be a bit different. Come to find out the factory method to try first to solve this is - really - to plug the drain hole in the clutch housing, fill it with gasoline and run it a bit. Once someone showed me an actual copy of the manual I figured, what the heck, it’s worth a try. Plugged the drain hole, pulled the floorboards and the inspection cover. Then I poured in about half a gallon of kerosene. No way in hell am I pouring gasoline in it to be flung all over! Kerosene ran out numerous places and I fired it up. It was kind of like a pump gone berserk - spraying everywhere. Poured in more, ran it through the gears for a bit (rear was on stands) then shut it off. Pulled the plug, more kerosene ran out. I took it for a drive. I can now shift from neutral to any gear with no grinding. Very little chatter as I take off. Slips just a bit where it didn’t before, but that was less after a 3 mile drive. I suspect with gasoline it would leave the plates not so slippery, if you didn’t blow yourself up, but I think the kero will evaporate in a little time and be fine. What the heck will I learn next???

    Thought I'd start a thread documenting fixes, improvements, adventures and maintaining the 48. First I'd like to thank all members for the everyday answers to people's questions about these old cars. Before joining the forum, I found answers to many of my questions as I got use to maintaining the 48. So, thank you all! My wife and I wanted to buy a classic car to enjoy while I restored my 58 plymouth since I wasn't going to have the 58 done in time for crusin the coast (2017). The plan was to buy a car, use it until the 58 is done then sale it. So, we located this 48 about 6 hours away and drug it home!

    When the '48 Special Deluxe sedan followed me home one of the first mods that came to mind was changing the standard master cylinder to a dual-chamber cylinder. Since the time in my very distant youth when my 1963 VW Beetle rolled into an intersection when a brake line let go I have been very wary of single-chamber master cylinders. I first checked with ECI to see if their master cylinder retro-kit was suitable for drum/drum brakes and was informed it was only for disks/drums. My hours spent researching the forum archives uncovered a photo of a retro-fit that formed the inspiration for this conversion. I don't recall who posted the photo....but Thank You. I'm including some in-process photos and will update as the conversion is completed. If anyone sees any gotchas feel free to wave a red flag. Here is the retro-fit as it stands this evening: The new cylinder mounts behind the body of the old cylinder and is activated by a pushrod running from the brake pedal through the gutted old cylinder to the new cylinder. The pushrod was fabricated with a combination of 5/8" steel tube and the ends of the old pushrod: It seems the original pushrod components are not easily replaced so this will allow them to be put back in service if a standard cylinder is used at a later time. A 7/16-20 nut was welded to one end of the tube and a 7/16-20 bolt to the other. This allows the pushrod length to be adjusted for proper pedal free-play. Below is the new master cylinder bracket, it is 0.090" steel and through-bolted to the frame rail:

    We and the Windsor 2018

    I never thought this would happen... As fate would would have it, at a car show yesterday I met the two successive owners of my 1953 Windsor Deluxe! We all chatted about the car. We shared what we'd each done to help it along to its current state. It was fun learning about the car's history. The stars all aligned that day. No two had spoken to each other about attending the show. Yet we were all there. I asked the guys for a quick photo to remember the occasion. Left to right: 2 owners before me. He bought the car in Oliver BC. Brought it to Pritchard BC. Owned it for about 5 years. Middle: Owner previous to me. He bought the car from fellow on far left. This fellow owned it for about 2 years. He brought the car to Chase BC. Then far right, me. I bought the car 2 years ago from the guy in the middle. I brought the car to Kamloops BC. Everything I have done I pretty much documented it on this forum somewhere, or created YT videos to share with other Mopar owners. Far left fellow says he misses the Windsor. He shared a little regret in letting it go. Both were happy to see it in good hands, being well cared for. It was a pretty cool day with my Windsor.

    Well I took her out today maiden voyage all is well I still to rebuild the king pins. But with the newer Dana 70 with the steeper gears I can get up to 70mph it's a hand full thought.

    Finally got the majority of projects at the house wrapped up, so we pulled the truck of my in-laws property yesterday. Got it weighed 3320#, dropped it at the house and headed to the DMV, was an out of state purchase that required multiple different items to get a clear CO title. With that being said and done, the banging of knuckles began.

    Coupe won't start.

    I'd state that differently: Never use starting fluid in an engine with glow plugs or intake heater, Danger Will Robinson!! Otherwise, let your engine drink responsibly. Small shots, crank till it clears before repeating. I hear warnings like this all the time, but it really hasn't proven to be an issue with me. However, I've only used for 60+ years, since I was 16-17, so tomorrow might be the day!! But it bears repeating: NEVER with electric heat in the engine. I have seen small diesels with severe damage from that.

    It lives!! It’s a totally different animal with the EFI and I only went around the block a couple times. The fan comes on when it’s supposed to and it runs 180°-190°. The base fuel maps still have a lot of learning to do but the idle is much smoother with a bunch more initial timing at idle, it fires immediately with no gas pedal input, and throttle response is amazing. I need to get an alignment! Reverse seems to work like it’s supposed to and it backs up nice and smooth. I think I hit 3rd once but it’s hard to say with the high stall converter. I air checked the front clutches before buttoning up the trans so at least I know the previous problems are fixed. The power brakes will get a little better when the rotors are smoothed out again from sitting. I have like 13” of vacuum at idle so they work better at speed but they’re not rock hard or anything. You’re supposed to do a bunch of cruising at different speeds and loads to let the fuel maps learn but it constantly adjusts pretty well so far and did everything my foot asked. I even got a scary fishtail with a 1/2 throttle blip while turning a corner. The new fuel cutoff switch (formerly battery neg cutoff) has a gremlin/ground loop ghost that makes the Idle Air Control valve hunt and tick with the ignition off. It still works for safety or if the motor won’t cut off for any reason in the future but I’ll have to throw a secret killswitch into the cab if I want more theft protection. A funny story- my neighbors are very patient and tolerant of my driveway activities. Technically you are only allowed to have a car up on stands if you’re under it- no junk laying around. But it doesn’t matter unless somebody complains- then you get a huge fix-it ticket and 10 days. Well nobody complained about me but the new renters across the street have a huge boat, RV, jeep, trailer, and a fleet of cars spilling out of the driveway, plus they pissed off some folks by playing basketball late at night and keeping people awake. My friend is kind of the mayor of the block and he warned me that when the township came to serve this guy he got loud with them and started pointing at my house “what about that guy!?” Perfect timing, jerk. I had just finished plumbing and wiring everything and only had one day of work left under the car. As long as it is not up on stands or visibly taken apart it’s legal but as of now it’s running driving insured registered and inspection exempt. I won’t be sad when they move out and I hope it’s soon! Anyway, I’m driving my car that has AC to work but I’m feeling pretty good!

    Dodges are ready for summer

    I got the Dodges ready for the Minnesota summer season. The B3B started right up and was ready to go. The brakes were a bit sticky after setting all winter but after warming them up they are OK. The 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger is all original, except for the rims, and also started right up. It has a 318 engine. This was my aunt's car who lived in CA and therefor it has no rust.

    Thank goodness I've gotten through to somebody. Been telling my wife the same things for 17 years now... she's just starting to understand. I don't live in desperation thinking of my dying moment at all times. But I'll be damned if I'm going to waste the time God has given me, especially since I've been here half a century already. Drive, have fun, love your family and your neighbor, cherish the little things, get that ice cream at Dairy Queen, don't fret when your car gets a scratch in it. Live.     A few years back I want down state to visit with the late Bob Drown and attend their local car show. Since it was early fall and I wanted to minimize the amount of night driving I would do, I plotted a return trip as close as possible to as the crow flies. I don't remember without a map what roads I traveled, but being it was a nice road and a nice day, I pulled over to set up my camera to record a portion. This road was climbing up the foothills of the southwestern corner of the Catskill Mountains. As I was pulled over a Toyota pick up went by going a bit above the 55 mph state speed limit. By t he time I got the camera situated and recording the pick up had. 30 to 40 second lead. So I made it my mission to see if I could catch him before he got to the top of the hill. Roll down the window, put your elbow on the door frame and enjoy Catch that Pickup.

    I bought this at auction Sunday. It's a 51 B-3-D. I started bid at $100 and a guy behind me went to $500. I let him buy it. As I turned to talk to him, he was saying to his wife that now he has to get rid of the tractor part. We split the cost, I drove it a mile home, disconnected the Bale Handler and loaded it on his flatbed with my forklift. And my 47 WD-21 in the background.

    A small update - spent a few evenings over the last few weeks repairing the steering wheel. Unfortunately it was in rough shape as the sun had got to the plastic and it was brittle and cracked. In some places the metal was showing. Whilst I loved the look and originality, it wasn’t safe and wouldn’t have been deemed legal and roadworthy over here. I found a NOS green wheel, but it was too pricey for me ($500) and I toyed with the idea of casting a new one in resin, however it would’ve been an expensive experiment with no guarantee of colour match. In the end, I opened up all the cracks and used an epoxy putty to repair it. There was a lot of sanding but it was complete and solid. In an attempt to get the translucent look of the original, I got a paint match and added some pearl clear to the finish. In the sun, it’s hard to tell the difference and I’m really happy with the way it turned out. It’s not perfect, but neither is the car! Some pics for you....

    Don't sweat too much the money spent on your car. I spent twice as much to purchase my car than what it was worth and I stuck a whole mess of money into it. I could have bought a really nice car for what I have into it. but the experience thus far has been priceless with its original paint and interior and all of the people I have talked to just because of the car. Just drive it and have fun. We don't know when our last day on Earth will be, but it could be here sooner than you think, so live it up!

    Been driving the car everywhere I can trying to burn the fuel out of it. Once I took the fuel sending unit out and got a look at the condition of the tank, along with the fine rust getting past 2 inline filters, I've ordered a new tank. Started another thread about what tank to buy but I got one on the way. I keep it close to full because the gauge never was right so I've got some fuel to burn. All that to say this. I didn't want to buy a new tank, I've spent a lot of money on this car and wanted to limit the money I spent on it. This week I lost a class mate from high school. 50 years old. That will make you realize we're only here for a short time. Enjoy the time you have! The car makes me and the wife happy, my bills are paid and I can afford a tank.....why not spend money on what you get enjoyment out of.....My son rode with me to go get steaks to throw on the grill for mothers day, he likes the car to. Wants to drive it to work from time to time. I didn't take any pictures.....but I'm very pleased with the 3.55 gears.

    Spring start up

    Battery charger on over night, couple shots of ether, vroom vroom, ride around the block 170 degree temp, 5amp charge rate at cruise, 30 psi oil pressure warm at idle, brake and signals work, two tires needed a couple pounds of air. Don't know where we went for the last drive in the fall, but we sure killed a bunch of bugs. Ready to kill some more. Cruise nights start next week. Vroom vroom!

    Fixed running boards, fixed overheat, and been driving daily, built a back bumper, hauled some rough cut mahogany home this week to make a bed for ol blue. Also took my first night run in the rain the other night. Lights worked and so did the wipers....

    brake adjustment tool

    This tool has been improved and updated and can be found in this thread. Like many newbies to the P15, I'm finding the brakes to be the most frustrating aspect of an otherwise simple vehicle. The absence of a factory adjustment tool certainly adds to the uncertainty of setting up the brakes in addition to not having prior experience with the Lockheed brakes. I filed flats on the ends of the anchor bolts so they can be adjusted with the drums in place but I just wasn't confident the shoes were concentric with the drums. The tool below is one I fabricated from scrap material in the shop and it provided visual confirmation that the shoe adjustment was close to what it needed to be. This is not an original idea and many of you may already have something similar, just want to toss this out for those who are struggling with brake adjustment. The tool is just a length of .875"x.059" steel tube with some 1/4" all-thread welded to it. A short length of aluminum angle forms a pointer than can be adjusted via the nuts on the all-thread. The tube is a close fit on the 3/4" spindle. With the drum in place one minor adjustment cam was set so the toe of the shoe barely dragged. The drum was removed and the pointer on the tool adjusted so it barely touched the toe of that shoe which is a close approximation of the ID of the drum. It is then just a matter of sweeping the tool over the shoes to adjust them so they are concentric to the drum. It turns out the method I had used to adjust the anchors and cams with the drums in place was pretty close but this added visual confirmation. I don't have the rear brakes opened at the moment so can't recall if the same steel tube will work on the axle. The tool could also be built by welding the all-thread to a spare axle nut.

    I never thought about comparing the flathead six to a "lawn mower engine". I can't think of one thing they would have in common other than gasoline and four strokes. Regardless, the old hemi in this C-series is totally cool. A Briggs & Stratton V-twin in a Pilot House pedal truck would be the cat's a**!

    I won some coupe NOS seat covers in green plaid. I haven't been real happy with my ivory colored upholstery due to how easy it can get stained. I paid $35 for this set. Only need the front seat but I think it will save my upholstery and I won't have to worry about it every time I get in.

    Thanks! The car photographs with my phone and lot better then it looks in person. There's areas where the paint has chipped and surface rust, the chrome is showing a good bit of age.....the roof has a dent....but I'm going to drive, maintain and enjoy it the way it is. Reading others post like Worden 18 has got me inspired to drive it more often then I do. Here's a b&w in front of some homes built in the late 20's or at least the brick one.

    P15 metric engine threads???

    But metric is so much easier, I just count my fingers. With imperial, I have to break one of my fingers in half, quarter, etc, it bloody hurts.

    The D.C. P15 Update

    on heat soak....with modern fuels the alcohol has a lower expansion temperature and well the engine is going to run x degrees.....the cure at times is lesser fuel in the bowl by adjusting the floats. The very odds that you are going to outrun the fuel in those twin carb bowls against filling with an electric fuel pump is SLIM SLIM SLIM. Another easy overlooked item is the heat of the very coil itself...these cause hard start more than most fuel probs. Next occurrence...verify that your spark voltage is not weaker when hot. I cold pack about the coil for testing will be a quick and easy test.
