  1. Just came in this afternoon. Serial number 003. If I can get past the cancer,I hope to put it in the dead stock 33 Dodge shown in the photos, and drive it around and enjoy the HELL out of it just like you see it in the photos. This was the type of car I used to see running around when I was a kid that you could buy and enjoy for 50 bucks because I had some hope of one day having 50 bucks. Had and still have practically zero interest in new cars, but I LOVED the hell out of stuff from the 30's and 40's. I will never win any prizes at car shows or runs with it,but you can bet there will be nobody there having more fun than me. Had a local guy ask me last year if I knew anybody interested in buying the good running 251 6 out of his 51 DeSoto for 250 bucks,so I snapped it up and it is now sitting on my garage floor next to the 33 Dodge. I also have dual carb aluminum intake and carbs for it. About the only piece I am missing that I can think of is a set of cast iron headers. so I can run duals. I prefer the sound of the cast iron over the tubular headers. Every time I think about this I want to stop what I am doing and do a little happy dance.

  2. Weather permitting, tomorrow I can adjust the valve lash and set her back in her home. Did quite a bit of trimming for port matching on the intake gaskets. I was surprised how much the Best gaskets overhung into the ports.

  6. I contacted the guy who I purchased my 1948 P15 from as he had said that he has a few odds and ends to give me for the car. Turns out that he had a few old wheel cylinders and other small items. But he surprised me when he gave me this shop manual for the Plymouth. And it is an original manual printed in 1946. I was planning to buy one to help me out with a few things that I was going to work on. And I cannot believe how detailed the thing is.

  7. Wow!!! Thanks Chrysler1941, and DonaldSmith. You’ve both cleared up that nicely. I obviously wasn’t as confused as I tho’t I was. Now, I’ll just get myself an adult beverage, relax, resume sitting in my favorite chair, and watch the show. Warmest regards to you both . . .

  8. Great video. I had a '48 Dodge very similar to yours; mine had the outside visor too. I like your ignition switch plate that is mounted beneath the original. My Dodge was the only car that I ever had that the ignition switch failed in. I'd be driving along and the engine would cut out momentarily and the come back on causing a hell of an an explosion in the exhaust system. I quickly had it replaced because I feared that I'd get pulled over for doing deliberate key bangers. Yours appears to have a rear seat fold down arm rest which mine did not. Thanks some much for posting this video. It brings back fond memories. John R

  9. My DeSoto has two tabs at the base of the steering wheel which engage the turn signal device and candel theturns. I presume that, for an aftermarket turn signal device of the time period, a sleeve with the two tabs could be pressed onto the steering wheel. Or maybe, the steering wheels came from the factory with the tabs in place, for future turn signal devices. Here's the best photo I have:

  10. Have you thought of Hydro Dipping. I do like the look of the original dash , But that's only my opinion and there pretty much like belly buttons. Here is a picture of my 37 Plymouth dash in burr walnut. It was Hydro Dipped along with the window surrounds by the previous owned.

  11. WAIT !!! I was able to bring the dry, chalky wood grain back to life on my 35 Dodges dash. You can see the difference in this photo what some #0000 steel wool and hot soapy water did for the wood grain. After cleaning the glove box door and coating it with clearcoat the wood graining came back to life.

  12. I would NOT paint that dash! what I wouldn't give to have the original wood grain. it is beautiful even tho I respect your choice.

  13. The diagram with two resistors in series does not make sense to me for an automotive circuit. Presumably, with 12 volts between the battery and ground, 6 volts would be available at the juncture between the two resistors. This is theoretically true. For items in a series, each item contributes to the voltage drop, in this case totaling the 12 volts. Equal items have equal voltage drops. Imagine two light bulbs in series. If each bulb is rated at 6 volts, and their wattages are the same, and 12 volts is applied to the series, each bulb would take 6 of the volts and shine fine. If a voltage meter is applied at the juncture between the two bulbs, it would register about 6 volts to battery, and 6 volts to ground, since the voltage meter draws negligable current. In fact, I saw such a circuit to provide about 6 volts to an electonic device which did not draw much current. But draw an unequal load, and voltage drops are not equal. Imagine two bulbs connected in parallel between ground and the juncture, and a single bulb connected to the battery. The single bulb would get more than 6 volts and the two in parallel would have to share less than 6 volts. Replace the two bulbs with a wire, and see how quickly the single bulb burns out. I've forgotten how V=I/R works with watts and ohms, but I think if a motor were connected between the juncture of the two resistors and ground, the motor would get little voltage and the single resistor to the battery would get verrry hot.

  14. Although I don't understand the need to convert to 12v, the best way is to use a step down converter . Using a resistor as a "reducer" or 2 resistors as a voltage divider is never good idea due to high amperage draw and heat. Using two 1 Ohm resistors as shown above will draw over 12 Amps. This will be converted to heat, hot enough to melt surrounding Insulation. A better way is spending $6 for a DC converter. Here is a link for a 15A converter. When connected you'll have to adjust to 6-7 volts. https://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-DC-15A-Buck-Adjustable-4-32V-12V-to-1-2-32V-5V-Converter-Step-Down-Module-DT/252586434129?epid=1684291373&hash=item3acf531e51:g:OKgAAOSwfpVZFFSw If motor turns the wrong way, swap wires on brushes.

  15. I would not put any anti freeze in it yet as you might have to clean it up off of the floor . And i would just use plain water for the start up and check for leaks . After you find no leaks , then put in the good stuff . Also you are correct to not let the engine idle for a good period of time , that is what the experts have told me . You have pre lubed with pressure so I don't think that you need to remove the cover of your oil pump .

  16. I ordered some fancy percys soft aluminum exhaust gaskets for between the head & headers- # 1 is ticking pretty good and I isolated it with a hose in my ear. I also found that I stripped the hose clamp to the thermostat neck. I don’t want to open the system again- I’ll probably cut the stupid chrome streetrod cover off with a dremel and replace the clamp with two new ones for insurance. The steering had a couple notchy spots so I moved the bearing support down a touch more- didn’t try it yet. And I remembered to zip tie the shifter cable off the headers too. It’s a chilly rainy morning here- hopefully tomorrow before work I’ll get a minute to wrench and shake down some more. Gotta get zinc, oil & a filter for her first oil change to get all that break in glitter out of there. Probably do plugs too unless they look great which is a possibility. I haven’t started tuning in earnest except for the timing, curb idle, and idle afr which all seem pretty happy. Also it seems to start pretty well if I spin it before squirting a little gas. When I prime it with a pump shot it seems to flood or generally be stubborn. I’m also pleased to find that I have a two finger margin before tire rub at full lock. Have to go slow turning into driveways with a bumpy enterance but totally drivable.

  17. It has been raining the last couple of days - I have lots of time to work on the truck this week so I decided to take another look at the rear fenders. I have access to a tubing roller so I decided to get a little crazy. I rolled some inch and a half square tubing to the same diameter as the fender I made. Looking for an industrial look without getting into the rat rod look. All total, there is over 15 feet of weld on this one fender. Definately strong enough to stand on.

  18. after much research I realized I couldn’t let someone else in control of driving me over 50 hours. We ended up flying to Arizona, renting a suburban and spending time with three different family members and two good friends who winter there.

  20. I checked the brakes and steering and went down to the corner and back. It is not always easy to start so I didn’t want to walk home and my kid is in the house watching cartoons after dinner. I was more than a little nervous but the rusty rotors worked ok and the steering was pretty good too- a little more effort than the over-assisted 70s muscle cars I’m used to but nice. I live on top of a small hill in the middle of my block and it’s a 2 lane street that narrows when people park on the sides so I was just concentrating on making it home without killing the motor or finding a terrible problem the hard way. It’s got a loud thrum at idle that will take some dynamat to cure but it never threatened to die. The turning radius was decent (should be for a shortened dakota) and the power brakes seem to be working ok? Not amazing. Breaking them in from their slumber will help but the actual braking happens after a good bit of free travel and requires some force on the pedal. Maybe I will eventually go to a smaller bore master but time will tell. I’m super glad I extended the floor forward under the pedal so it could have more travel without a higher starting point. I hardly looked at the gauges but on the way back up the hill I gave it half throttle and good lord she’s got some stink! BIG milestone today.

  21. Guys, thanks for the concern. I have been out of contact because I now have stage 4 lymphatic cancer, and between visiting every doctor and hospital in the western world and the confusion from the chemo and other drugs,my normal state these days is one of confusion and tired. The good news is that I have lost 30+ lbs so far,and can now bend over again without blacking out. Which would be handy if I could remember why I was bending over. Taking chemo twice a month for 6 months, and the doc says they can kill it. No guarantees, but they seem confident. No big surprise since I was medievaced from VN in Dec of 69 with pus-filled sores all over my torso, and a permanent medical profile that got me removed from Special Forces and assigned to a non-SF and non-airborne assignment. I didn't like the regular army any more than the regular army liked me,so like a fool I got out and refused the medical discharge I was offered because I figured I would get better and be able to enlist again. I was wrong. Anyhow,I now have occasional days when I feel pretty good, and that's about the best than can be said for it other than the fact everybody tells me they can cure me of it.. Looks like it's going to be a long 6 months, though. Being in my 70's probably doesn't help. One Mopar question. I am having trouble getting in email contact with the Dodge Boys in Montana about a finned aluminum Edgy head I bought for a 251 Mopar flat 6. I received the 230 head I bought the same day a couple of months ago,but not the 251 head. Due to recent medical problems I mostly forgot about it and let it slip through the cracks. Now that I am a little better,I need to find out when/if I am ever going to receive the head. Anyone else getting any responses from them?
