  2. I soldered a diode across the points of my P-15 clock to prevent arcing. It ran well for years and was still running when I sold it. I saw the diode trick in an article in the P-15 Driver newsletter that was available years ago.

  3. I doubt it did sit flush per-say Should not make any difference since both ends of the shaft are on ball end type of a pivot. Since the picture Don posted -listed that metal plate as a spring it was most likely made of a spring steel metal that can flex as needed.. So no worries?? DJ

  4. Matching works, but knowing the numbers that are the right ID and near the length can shorten the search. Most stores stock in number sequence so he may be able to walk right to it. And, it it's not in stock, you can know what to order in.

  5. I just found PDFs of the complete 1911 edition and the complete 1920 edition online for free. Simply Google Dykes Automotive Encyclopedia. The 1911 edition is listed by Google, the 1920 edition is listd by the Dodge Bros. club. I think that the physical book would be great to thumb through, but the online version offers immediate gratification for zero cost.

  8. thanks Merle, as he pictured the angle cast iron unit with water hose port in his picture I mistakenly thought this was the unit he was looking for.....I knew these were available... this is where a v-notch and a good weld comes in very handy or secondly I would ask to walk though the preformed hose for the right diameter with the proper angle to make a quick and easy transit ion and just clamp it on, record the number for prosperity, but then I am not into points for originality...

  11. Be sure to check back and report. Either confirm or suppress my enthusiasm...I'm carrying on reading sections daily. Maybe it's just my age and I missed a ton of cool stuff about old cars and how they worked. For example I did not know that old cooling systems did not have a water pump, nor thermostat, and were non-pressurized. I would have probably grasped that pretty easily being as at some point everything had to be engineered. Go back far enough and old cars had 1 HP, and ate hay. The thermo-syphon principle is lost on most people today. Neat old stuff that we had to learn and live through to get where we are today. Did you know that old cars used to have manual control levers to open and close air fins on the front of cars? To control air flow through the rad, from within the cab? Sure, you probably did. I didn't and I'll be ogling over the next car equipped with air fins that I see at a car show. I have never owned a car with that awesome feature. Today we make winter fronts to cover our radiators up here in Canada. Today we seem to have gone backwards in some ways. How about those neat cooling system thermometers that screw into your rad, replacing your rad cap? I'd wager that less than1% of the population today have ever heard of one. Let alone how they work, how to read them, or how they react with non-water pump, and water-pump equipped cooling systems. My point is, the book takes many of these interesting topics and breaks them down for a very good depth of understanding. Using common non-engineering type language. Akin to maybe, car mechanic language. I'm not implying that grease monkeys are dumb, but I am no calculus wizard and this book suits me just fine. These are a few examples of what I took from the cooling system section. Maybe this is all useless stuff to most people today. However for a car nut, someone who enjoys shop talk at the car show, who wants to preserve and maintain old cars, this book is indeed a must have.

  12. Maybe the car senses you're going to sell her and is doing everything to remain in your family or,....is making you miserable to get even for you intended abandonment. Finally, check the tank and filter for debris. I had a similar issue and a piece of gunk would occasionally float over the gas pickup. I've also had a defective electric fuel pump that made noise (seemed to run) but had no pressure, didn't pump any fuel.

  13. PS.....on the D marking.....I normally see this on Lucas components and it is short for DYNAMO (ARMATURE) …..some Bosch will be D for armature, DF for field and of course most use BATT (B+) for power and Gnd, D-, T or Earth for grounding....

  14. most of the EZ retro circuits are set up for later style charging systems using alternators from the big three and not the generator. EZ wiring should have a support number for this question. They are easily found online...your installation instruction manual that came with the wiring kit should also include a tech number for support. The alt power should go to the batt connector of the regulator and of course the generator will wire normally field to field on regulator and armature to armature also back to the regulator. You will not use the exciter wire. Do ensure your have good clean grounds on these components.

  20. Thanks DJ! I have the full exhaust installed but it’s kind of an ignorant setup- usually the strategy is to neck down as the gasses cool but mine goes from 3” at the block hugger collectors, down and back under the cab to 3.5” for a couple feet then into dual 3.5” flowmaster super 40 mufflers. After the mufflers I have slash cut turn downs so the impulses get that nice sound slapping off the ground and also aimed a little out and at the rear tire contact patch in case I want to do an australian style billowing smoky burnout. I’m definitely not the burnout king though- I’ll powerslide a turn here and there and I’ve been known to chirp a green light or an upshift but tires cost $ I don’t know what it’s going to sound like but in my experience the 2500+rpm for 30 mins flat tappet cam breakin period is loud no matter what pipes you have. The real payoff for me is when that’s over and you get to hear what the idle will sound like and check out the throttle response. I’ve gotten into the habit of doing the initial break in in three ten minute stints with cool downs inbetween but with this cool weather if I don’t have any leaks to address I might just get it overwith in one loud annoying fingers and toes crossed session.

  23. I understand that and respect that. I guess if someone came around wanting to buy it to restore. Thing is I can't really post it for profit. And most people around here would do the same thing I'm doing cause most people around here dont have these cars and on this forum. Plus I dont think I'll get as good of a car next time for what I paid. I got nos fenders with it which are shown on the car. The original fenders too. All fenders are over all good shape. Floor and frame is over all good. Same for the body, lower areas like rockets need work. I think I have most of the trim (I know I'm missing a bumper) rad looks good. Inner fenders are good. Dash is there, windows are good. The enamel badges look nice

  24. Roman (guard dog) is the alpha male for sure, but its Lilly (house dog) that's the fender eater......she'll be in the house this year. Roman and Ridge (other guard dog) will be in the cattle trailer chillin for the afternoon. Moose (house dog) and Peka (house) will be on bedroom duty for the afternoon too....... Sachi (red tailed hawk) is getting a bit old.....she won't be on display but can be visited at the hawk house. Tonto (horse) as always will be in plain site ready to chew on any sheet metal to close to his fence. Never realize how many animals til I have to park'em for the day...lol. OH, and the Missies has a cat now......Jag (stray cat found in the shop) 48D

  27. Thanks fellas. I got worried for a second I know ignitions can be sensitive to RF and not to run the purple and green back trigger wires right alongside any high tension plug/coil wires! Thanks also for the vote of confidence on the motor. I forget the name of the gameshow from the 80s but whenever I start a fresh motor to break it in I still say “no whammies no whammies no whammies” When I built my ‘72 demon pretty much through my whole 30s I started out making an old pile into a daily driver, then a ratty big motor hotrod, then a kind of low buck resto-mod with a gorgeous stock interior, paint and fancy decals, 500hp. It turns out it was the most useful in its first incarnation, the most fun in its second and the most impressive but least fun in its last. I am not into the ‘ratrod’ thing but I do like honest patina, beaters, and sleepers. Some important visual stuff definitely already happened- stance, wheelbase, upholstery, rims & tires, and some is in the works- gauges, controls, tidy but not hidden wiring & plumbing, ipe wood bed. So there will be some mix of fanciness and crustyness. I plan to get rid of the green on the door interiors and put in red upholstered panels over black paint on the floor and doors asap and finish weld the join from sectioning the bed sides but it’ll be a while before I address the body work or start thinking about spraying an actual color. I want to enjoy it for a while! Here’s pics of my demon in all 3 stages just for fun

  28. Tires just arrived from Diamondback, very quick delivery and they look very nice!! Tomorrow the new brake hoses go on along with checking to see if all the hardware is in place and adjusting the brakes. . Sunday I have a 9AM appointment to swap out the Cokers for the Diamondbacks and then do the allignment. Hoping the 49 will be going down the road straight and true and stopping without a "hard dive left" hahaha!! I think the brake hoses will take care of the main reason for the dive but that drivers side front is not looking good. Exciting to get on the road!!!! HA!! Doc.
