  2. "The thing about Bicyclists is that they are either Gearheads or they despise all motor vehicles. I fall into that first category." Yes, Sir! And when you're on a tight schedule, it's best to combine the two when possible.

  3. Seems daily every product that is purchased is marked by a warning not to consume digest handle the contents or the bag it is packaged in. With all products world wide so marked....we all will have to be inside a plastic bubble...GIVEN the bubble is not also manufactured from materials harmful to our health....somewhere in the past few years seem humankind has lost the common sense gene entirely.

  4. Just brought home my Dad's 1948 Desoto S-11 Custom Coupe that he has owned since 1978. He and Mom hauled my oldest daughter all over the upper Midwest, chasing down parts for the restore. Dad says that he'd put her on the roof an old car(she was 4 or 5) and she'd be able to spot the 46-48 DeSotos. It's a beautiful car that has a few mechanical issues, mostly with the Fluid Drive. Being a railroad equipment mechanic, though, there shouldn't be any system on the car that's beyond me. I hope. That's my Dad rooting through the tool box and my shadow. That little girl that hung with my Dad is pushing 40.

  7. John, post a photo and dimensions of the nut you're looking for. I would think that Ace has one, I'm surprised at the things they have when you start digging around!

  8. I've been asked a lot of things by a lot of different people in my life. Giving advice, lending a hand, being politely asked to leave..., they are all generally of a similar class of requests such that not many are ever a surprise anymore. That was true most of my life until as of late. Now I'm getting surprised all the time. Here's some examples. Looking for any and every excuse to drive my truck, I took my kids to a birthday/costume party. In a few minutes parents were asking for kids to pose in and on the truck. Why not? A couple weeks later, again looking for an excuse to drive it, we used it to go to the local Chili Cook-off. It was pretty easy to just put the old slow cooker in the back and drive over. I stopped to drop off my entry and then went and parked. Within 30 minutes the organizers were looking for the owner of "that old black truck". They wanted to park it in the middle of the event for ambiance. Well, ambiance and picture poising. So many people wanted to crawl in and out of it, my view was obscured more than once. The wife bought a new mattress and box spring from Sears but refused to pay the $80 delivery charge. She was going to bring it home on the top of the Ford Escape. I mentioned that I had a truck which she had not considered. Not sure why she didn't - too "special?". We laughed. So we drove down to the outlet, tied the new items up and headed home. Near home I was trying to make a lane change but was blocked by some lady in a car. She kept matching my speed! I finally just decided to turn right. She ducked in behind us and followed. I remarked to the wife that if she pulled along side that the truck was $17,5k firm. We laughed and turned left. The lady followed. A couple of stop signs later, the car behind us pulled up and waved for my wife's attention. Seems she was getting married Saturday and wanted to be taken to the church and reception in my truck. My dirty, old, smells like gas, farm truck. If you would have seen her smile, heard her excitement, you wouldn't have said no either. What to charge her got me thinking about one of 48Dodger's blog posts. The question was about being able to put a proper the price on our parts or services. I was struggling with that and it took me a while to come up with a clear answer for myself. In the end I didn't charge her a penny. Couldn't really. There was no price on a blushing bride, clearly happy about going to her wedding in an old farm truck. There was no payment large enough for the looks on people's faces, the thumbs up, as we passed them on the way to the church. You certainly could never have found enough of any payment of any kind for the entire church gathering's collective look as we drove off with the newlyweds in the front cab. I got paid with this story. With smiles. Good feelings all around. I'm lucky enough to be in a position to make some people happy. Whether you know it or not Tim, you do the same thing for a lot of people here. Did for me.

  10. Seems there are way to many threads on this same issue. Perhaps a moderator can combine them so all the responses can be found in one thread. http://p15-d24.com/profile/10522-alsfarms/content/

  11. Sorry to rain on your parade, but the 228 is 3 3/8 by 4 1/4 and is a block with a 25 inch head. This is the engine which powered the 37 Desoto and was later used in the larger Dodge in Canada and was last found under the hood of the Canadian 55 Plymouth The 230 had many applications but had a 3 1/4 bore and the cylinder head measured 23 inches. Bellhousings will interchange but be careful with ring gear and starter as mentioned in earlier posts.

  14. Since you know the Vacum Advance unit number then do a serach on the Ebay for that unit or have it sent out for repair. Also now that you know the number when going to swap meets then keep you eye out for your specific model. Keep a small booklet with you with the number and then you will have it ready when searching. This is why i have collected the various catalogs to support the owning of my 1939 desoto. Knowledge is so powerful. Checked my Autolite catalog the Vac Adv would be VC-3147 used on : Chry 1949-51 Desoto 49-51 Dodge car 49-51 Dodge truck 1948-50 fargo 1948-49 Plymouth 1949-50 Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

  18. Promised myself on this project I'd do the firewall pad before putting a bunch of wires and control cables through the firewall that would be in the way. So started on the firewall pad. Starting on the drivers 1/3. This was originally all 1 piece but I'm making it in 1/3s. Finished except for insulation and mounting holes. Old on the left new one the right. and a trial fit
