  1. Well, it made it home! I took our yard truck and trailer to pick it up. Loading it was a breeze, I used the knuckle boom on the truck to pull it up on the trailer. The truck definitely has its fair share of rust, but it's definitely not too far gone. I decoded the serial number and it's a 1952. It's a B3JM161. I'll post more pictures this weekend of it. I'm just happy I finally have it!

  2. Finally back at it today after two weekends away. Got the generator all pained up this morning. It's drying now. While the paint dried I set up the armature in the lathe and checked run out of the commutator. Manual says to turn it if runout is over 2 mil. This one came in at only 1 mil, but heck.... it's already in the lathe. May as well make it perfect. I checked valve to stem clearance for both intake and exhaust valve guides. New valves felt a bit loose in the guide, but the only way to tell is to do a direct measurement. I found the intakes to have a taper from 0.005" at the top of the guide to 0.003" down at the bottom. The exhaust guides came in at over 0.008", so all the guides are worn out of spec. I'll be reaming the currently installed guides and installing a silicone bronze liner in each guide today. Finally feel like I'm doing something besides cleaning, blasting and measuring parts.

  3. We owned a small amusement park and it was amazing how many kids would throw there pennies out in the parking lot. My young nephew was there one day and I pointed at a penny on the pavement and he said there is no way he would bend over to pick up a penny. Fast forward 15 years that same nephew doesn't have a pot to piss in and expects the rest of us to support him. I am 52 and still bend over for every penny I see.

  5. Thanks! You are correct, I actually took a minute and looked that gasket in comparison to the block and it does only go on one way. I did pick up the permatex coating as well and thanks for the info on torqueing increments, that'll help out.

  8. Sounds like either the coil or the points to me. Most likely the coil. "Point bounce" is more common in engines that turn a lot more RPM's than your flat 6 turns. Since it is a good idea to carry a spare coil, points, condenser, and distributor cap in the trunk anyhow, and a HELL of a lot cheaper than paying a roll-back to carry you home, why not just buy all that stuff new and try it one at a time until the problem goes away, starting with the coil? Coils crack and get burnt out from getting too hot from bad grounds, but it's the cracked ones that operate fine to start an engine and then operate at low RPM's. Once they get hot and the demand on this climbs from higher RPM the crack widens from the heat and you lose fire.
