  1. Please look at my first attempts at woodgraining some trim on my P15 business coupe. Contstructive criticism, suggestions and compliments welcome. I used Krylon Khaki as a base color and Minwax Classic Grey 271 for the grain. There is no clear on it yet, I'm just experimenting.

  2. Anyone have problems with steering play? My 51 Plymouth has new, correct bearings & race. If you are brave enough to get your steering box out of the car, you need the correct bearings. I found Rxxx Auto to have the parts, but the bearings were not fitting , the seals were ok. So i looked up in my Chilton parts manual, got the correct bearing numbers, searched eBay, found the correct bearings & race. The box takes two bearings (upper - lower) - both are the same number -> 669077. (you will need 2) The bottom race # TIMKIN 6CE, will be worn as it takes the full load weight of the shaft & steering wheel. The top race is integral with the shaft. Rock Auto has the correct seals, not correct bearing. This cross references with Ford tractor 1939 to 1964. Ford # 683571-A2 for the bearing, not for the race.

  4. I had some luck at a yard sale today. The drawers are full of taps and dies of all sizes. The boxes are new taps. Also included was an extractor set and a striping tool. I haven't inventoried them yet. The same seller had other machinists tools, I may have to re-fill the wallet and head back.

  6. Looks like the engine ran a little rich and burned some oil. Plugs don't look eroded excessively. They are no good as is IMO.

  7. Hello, everyone I just put the repaired damper on, I had mine rebuilt by the "Damper Dudes"! They did it within a week, only costing $170.00 I had put a mark where the keyway was when the 6 bolts lined up. I replaced all 6 bolts and it seems to run fine and the timing marks line up too! Well that damper should be good for another 70 yrs. Thanks to everyone for all the tips! Ernie Baily

  10. I had a couple of VW bugs in the early 70's. Don't remember the HP of the newer one only a couple of years old,but the first was a 61 convertible with 36 hp. That was when I found out I was driving uphill to get home. The car would actually run 5 mph faster going away from home than going back home. The old bugs were truly fun cars for young people to own, though. You could take off and play Boy Racer with them every time you left a parking spot in perfect safety because they wouldn't really go fast enough to hurt you. Yet you still had all the fun of winding it out and speed shifting, just like you were accomplishing something. I remember getting drunk one day and using a hammer and chisel to cut away most of the fenders, and putting the wheels and tires from a junk Pontiac on it so I could go riding on the sand dunes and the beach. It didn't last long after that. Weak transaxle.

  11. Sounds like you've got all the systems covered. Based on the photo of the dash area, I'd change around the order of things to put the wiring system either first or just after freeing the motor. It looks like there are some serious modifications that ought to be addressed with the customized wiring job.
