  1. Glad to see you saved this car. I know they can't all be saved but everyone that is saved means someone else ( maybe many in the big picture ) can enjoy it. You were sold the car at a reasonable cost, therefore could afford to invest the time and money in it to get it going again. It's a shame people that aren't really into the actual car hobby and just in it for money drive the prices up. Good luck on the project hope it brings you lots of enjoyment.

  2. I rarely send or receive text messages. First off I primarily use my cell phone for emergencies. If I make an attempt to text my fingers are way too fat to punch the right key so I rely on Siri. So I do not know the language of text. Problem with Siri is she does not like it when I cuss. She always says "Don, your language"

  3. You may be correct, I don't really know Don any better than you....that being said I have been talking to and agreeing and disagreeing with Don for 6 years longer than you have been on this forum Mike. Yes he is very helpful and I think he means well, but as Don says say what you mean and let the chips fall where they may...lol. It was just a mild chastisement, I am capable of much worse if needed....Don will weed me out if he wants to or he may ignore me altogether, but we still respect each others opinion.

  4. Well, I finally did it. I broke down and bought me a Mopar. Vintage 1948. Flat 6, 3 on the tree. Was told it was a 230, but figure it's a 218. People selling their cars never lie, right? So what's been done as faras I can tell; Converted to 12 volt, still has a generator. Ignition is still 6v. Converted to disc brakes on the front. New wire harness. Seats recovered no headliner. Door panels covereved with cloth. No insulation anywhere..gets nice and warm in Vegas. All seams welded and filled..and everything is black. Inside..outside..underneath..everything. Front shocks relocated. Issues; Vapor locks..maybe..might be a weak fuel pump or the carb needs rebuilt. Either way added an inline electric pump and cured my woes. Electrical. Not a big fan of having some 12 volt and some 6v stuff. So the to do list includes making it 12v thruout. Second electrical issue is the master power relay clicks when using brakes or turnsignals. So I need to whip out the multimeter and test for backfeed, interference etc. It's slow..I'm a big block chevy guy. Definitely won't be getting a speeding ticket in this car. Rear end swap is imminent.. The brakes. The pedal is a bit spongy, then yesterday while picking up a hot flight attendant at the airport, the pedal decided it didn't want to come all the way back up. So I used my toe to help it..need to put my face down there and look what the issue is. (By the way, the looks you get when you pull into a big international airport in an old car, then you have a hot babe stewardess hop in..priceless. Just thought I'd throw that in.) So. If you are still awake. I've been doing my homework. Looks like the Explorer rear with disc brakes is the way to go. Not interested in adding an overdrive unit. Looking for rear axle upgrade. Discs and of course gears etc. Master cylinder swap. Rack and pinion steering. Chase my gremlins. Insulate the interior. Find some sort of headliner. Make the shiny stuff shiny again. Rims and tires. Lower it. Mexican blankets for the seat since third degree burns on my ass are highly undesirable. Add mirrors, I'm not that interested in what's behind me but, ya know, there's that law thing. So hit me with the horror stories and fairy tales of what I'm looking to do with past experiences..I'm not new to having old stuff. Oldest I've owned is 29 Chevy pickup. 35 2 door master. Kinda glad not to have to deal with wood. Now..its time to go outside and play. As an aside. The 3mb pic limit should be fixed. Just saying.

  8. I'm this close to a non-cosmetic driver. Fix that valve and restart the engine and install, fully install the doghouse, activate the installed EZ ,wiring harness, all systems have been checked out already, bleed the brakes, all new lines are in, and fab mounts to bolt in the 2010 Lincoln bucket seats, the interior is done, and rims and tires are on. So I am close. I paid $350 for this Suburban, bought it as a parts car then discovered it was a sound vehicle, so . . . here we are. The pic shows what I found once I steam cleaned it and pushed it in my new shop. Was parked following a minor fender bender, it was given to the person who sold it to me, but his wife told him to get rid of it, so he did. I don't have much money invested yet it does add up. My single largest expense is the EZ harness and my retirement time. In hindsight, I could have fixed the engine and driven it.

  9. I don't believe maximum torque value applies in this application. If you tighten the oil pan bolts to maximum torque it will flatten the gasket and insure a lot of leaks. This is one of those touchy freely applications.

  10. yes that is the overdrive lockout. It should be pulled out when parked or driving around town.

  11. My 1st project at the OEM was riddled with problems, lots of ppl pitched in to cause daily headaches...by the time that 1st unit got to the assembly line, it had gotten the nickname Lime Green Bstrd...it was then that I learned that it wasn't worth it to argue with ppl on the assembly line cuz they didn't listen, they would do whatever they wanted, curse engineering for screwing everything up, then let engineering fix the problems before deciding to listen to instructions. Because they couldn't listen to instructions, the first build had complaints that hoses were too short...when I tried to explain to them that the hoses were routed wrong, they insisted that the hoses were too short, with the crusty lead man cussin' at me to go get the hose stretcher back in the hose shop, with a few others chiming in agreement...I surveyed the situation and agreed, then headed back to the hose shop...the hose shop guys kinda looked at me funny, so I told them that lead man was pranking me, to which they laughed. I then asked to borrow some large slip joint pliers nearby and told them I'd be back in 15...I showed back up at LGB with the lead man perfectly perched up a 6 foot ladder and showed him them pliers...he tells me that those were not hose stretchers, to which I replied that they were johnson bar pullers, and that he should hold still for a minute while I motioned them big pliers like a snapping turtle...WHOA WHOA WHOA he exclaimed as he tried to scramble up that ladder, with the locals howling at the turn of events...in later years, when another new guy would show up on the shop floor for a new project, I invariably got dragged into solving these problems as I was kinda good at it and the guys on the line knew I didn't bs my way out of issues...the hose stretcher would be requested from the responsible engineer from various locations around the facility, as far away from the line as possible, with one winter it being located in a storage shed that was super dirty for the arrogant smart mouth engineer that blamed everyone else for his screwups...we had him out there for a couple of hours in subfreezing temps digging thru dusty shelves before I went to go get him, telling him that the stretcher was in Virginia being calibrated so we were going to try something else...when he eventually found out that Santa Claus wasn't real, he pouted and sulked for weeks...bless his heart

  12. Bingster Thanks for the update on the project. Some of us did not know if you were making progress. Glad to hear that you have the fan belt installed. So you are making progress and keep on going. Rich Hartung

  13. I remember hearing those Pontiacs go up the street when I was a kid. Quiet and smooth. Also slow. Just now remembering how nearly every common brand of auto could be identified by the sound of the engine. This was back in the '50s, when I could still detect sound.

  14. and if so, not with their original engine, somewhere here a friend gave ma an old car magazine from about 51/52 where the little 49 Plymouth 218 flat stomped a Pontiac straight 8 in about every aspect of the word....having driven a straight 8 Pontiac in the past in stock form......I can say this..they are ultra quiet and very smooth....a race car it was never intended to be.....guess the added cylinder was what aging does to whiskey stored in oaken barrels.

  16. http://www.championradiators.com/plymouth-coupe-radiator-1947-1949 I am ready to pull the trigger on this one for a friends 47 Ply. Bus. Cpe. in my garage. This radiator can be had on EBAY for a few $ less but if you read closely on warranty it is way less than the one posted that is a life time warranty and guaranteed to cool up to 600 HP. So unless your planning on a blown hemi in your future I'm sure this will work out. Don't like the aluminum look? Paint it with a radiator black spray paint, Not regular black paint as it will reduce the cooling ability of the radiator. DJ

  17. Some things have a torque specification and some do not. I use a speed wrench on oil pan gaskets and only tighten enough to slightly squeeze the cork gasket.

  20. If you were running straight tap water, these leaks would probably "take up" or stop within a few days. Antifreeze solutions will make their escape more readily than water and will persist. If it were mine, I would run straight water for a week or two then refill with the antifreeze solution.

  21. OK Mike, I'm confused... Your profile says you have a '49 1 ton and the wiper position on the cowl would back that up. But the hood and grill are for a B3 model and you have a '52 license plate. What's up with that?

  22. This is what I did w mine. I had one good solid whisker, and only part of a parking lamp housing. Easily reversible if I ever find the parts I'm looking for. The wipers arent' normally parksed that way. I had just cleaned the windshield.

  23. Looks like you're only missing the upper and lower 'whiskers'. A post in the classified section would be helpful.

  24. Maybe your experiences are different than mine, but unless it was a nationally-recognized chain that specializes in engine rebuilds and has a good reputation,I prefer to have it done locally for 2 reasons. 1: I like to support local businesses if possible 2: If things are not as they are supposed to be,I have found that placing my hands around the evil-doers neck helps to eliminate any confusion about a refund. When I was younger I was willing to travel hundreds of miles if necessary to discuss matters face to face, but I just don't have that much patience or time anymore. People have a tendency to tell you anything they need to tell you to get you off the telephone, but that's a lot harder for them to do when you are standing in front of them.

  25. That hemi will be a real money pit, I would imagine the cheapest way out would be to put it on a pallet and ship it down to me. Last dime you would have to spend on it.

  28. As it happens my convertible was dropped to the trimmer shop on Friday. He will be removing and installing a new haartz top for me. Part of the deal is that he allows me time to repaint the bows while the top is off. I will be able to make photos for you likely mid week.
