  1. Another 1949 Dodge B1B breathes again! Been a long road to this point and plenty still to do but this truck got a complete frame off going over. Nothing perfect and never going to be a show truck but I've learned a ton from the guys here and a little knuckle busting of my own. So together we should celebrate this milestone - Thank you! I had some health issues this year and this project is where I poured my time to keep my mind off it. I went all-in in January. Put the cab back on, put an engine from my 50 parts truck in the 49, used the tranny that came with the 49 (was hooked to a desoto that was seized). Rigged up a radiator and hooked up a gas tank from an old lawnmower. I painted the dash and put gauges and switches back, rebuilt a new wire loom, and metered out all connections - so far so good. Wiper motor was shorting, pulled it and found it full of rust too. Pulled coils and brushes out, cleaned it all up, re soldered coils and that now works. I dropped marvel mystery oil in each cyl and worked it over a bit and found the starter stuck. .....Yesterday I pulled the starter apart cleaned out a pound of rust wire brushed it, cleaned up brushes and it worked ....so - judgement day. A little fiddling with distributor and a good dose of gas down the throat she sneezed that marvel right out, ther'll be no mosquitoes in my shop for a while. Still too much snow to even get out of my shop, so I put rear end up on jack stands to run it through the gears... ha no first gear due to an "obstruction".... Had to torch and bend the shift lever because it hit the dash and couldn't get to first gear ;-), Need to finish sandblasting floor so I can POR it and get it back in - need me a gas pedal again! Sitting atop my milk crate seat at the helm of my "pilothouse" was a pretty good day! Progress my friends! Just like I'm 8 again counting the minutes til I can get back in the sandbox....Can't wait to get another day playing with my truck. Cheers, J 49 Dodge first start.mp4

  4. What a day!! Hank, Rod & I went through sheds full of MOPAR car & truck parts at a place in Cudahy today. We suggested that the parts owner come to the BBQ, but we'll catch up with her again at Spring Flling at Van Nuys on the 8/9th April if she doesn't make it th Clements. We will bring photos to the BBQ of the 4 trucks which she is selling.

  5. I have 2 of the NAPA 6 volt batteries that I would swap out and they give you what you would expect for performance. If you have the room step the group number up and get more Cold Cranking AMP (CCA). It makes a big difference Also have to say an overlooked aspect is the battery is only as good as your cables and ground so when performance is getting low I do a check and clean of the cables and posts, also do a full charge on the bench charger overnight to top the battery off. . If you really want a great battery that spins the motor over fast go for the Optima red top in 6 Volt I was surprised at how much difference it made. Now I just run the red top in my old truck

  6. No not my motivation for the foundation of this thread, but if you think it is, okay by me. Interesting on the HAMB, many many HAMBERs like and prefer drum brakes, for a myriad of reasons open fender hot rods, lighter builds etc, Ford trucks of the 50s, and whole lot more. But a real support for drum brakes over there. Now another old car friend of mine locally had this to say today. He has a 32 Chrysler with a 54 251 engine, T5 tans and 3.90 gears, all the rest stock except its a 12 volt up grade. He has driven the car coast to coast in Canada and the USA, this summer he is off to Indiana for a meet, about a 1000 miles from here. He says his brakes have been great and saf, they are very effective, and he is not driving 45 mph, I have been in this car and cruises at 70 mph with ease. He once hauled a 16 foot camper trailer back from the west coast over the rockies home to Manitoba, about 1500 miles no problems. 1 of his a other builds though, a 30 something Graham, it has a 251 Mopar engine, T5 trans, but front disc, rear self energizing drums and a dual MC with power booster, so he is not against upgrades. I hope all will share there experiences and thoughts, and Knuckle, I have no issues with whichever brakes systems people may favor over another, what I do isn't the "best" cuz I say so, so the same gos for what others say is the "best", isn't always the fact...

  8. After someone posted about the DOE SNOT I also had to laugh at my own post. It would be funny to see some DOE SNOT on mine since the Doe would have to crawl under the car because my battery is under my front seat. Hope everyone had a good laugh and I guess you figured it out it is not DOE SNOT but should be DOES NOT. Good laugh by everyone. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

  12. To keep your battery life longer we have discussed at the AACA annual meeting lecture series thaty you should have a battery tender onyour car while it it sitting idle. The main problem is that the battery discharges without one and then the plates start to corrode and build up on them and they loose their charge by keeping it fully charge these is less corrosion and the battery doe snot have to keep getting recharged after sitting along time. 13. Hey Guys, Here are the pics of the motor in the truck. Lower Rad support is definitely relieved for the pulleys and the side brackets look like they're pushed back, and like they front edge (closest to the camera) has been cut. You can see how close this thing is to the firewall too. It doesn't clear by much. M

  14. Probably because none of them actually make batteries any more. They just use their name and have them made in foreign countries with less stringent/non-existent environmental laws.

  16. Ok,but if you are going to upgrade the front brakes anyhow,WHY fool with drums when it is just as cheap to run discs? I don't get it.

  17. You only need the dually rims to make it a dually, no change to the rear end. the dually rims have offests and 'coined' lug holes that seat the rims together. Then they just bolt onto the hubs.

  20. I've done it both ways; I cut a coil off the front springs on my 51 Plymouth and had dropped spindles on my 49 Plymouth. Both worked fine and I can't say either method was noticeabley superior as far as the way the car handled.

  21. It's hard to explain the sinking feeling of helplessness you have as you watch the car in front of you approach the front end of your car while you're mashing your break pedal to the floor and knowing you're not going to stop in time. Honestly, I believe we would have stopped in time if I had discs on it at the time. The brakes were hot and faded, I had left plenty of room to come to the next planned stop. I've had several simular close calls and was so impressed with the difference that disc kits are the first thing I buy for my cars that I've since acquired and drive regularly in rush hour traffic.

  22. On my 40 Chrysler C25 the chassis number is stamped on the RHS of the frame in front of the suspension https://www.dropbox.com/s/x5e9dnwo9bf1p6y/Note_20131119_001326_1.pdf?dl=0 Rick

  23. Looks like a date stenciled on there. March 23, 1948 (3-23-48) and then the last two numbers. Could it have been something stenciled on a stack of frames that were delivered to the assembly line? I thought that the number that is stamped into the frame rail matched the engine number. I know mine does on my 53 Suburban.

  25. WOW......Merle is already in the state! Davin is on his way! And the weather keeps getting better for the BBQ! There will be rain/15mph winds in the morning Thursday....sunny with 19mph winds on Friday.....Saturday sunny 75 degs and 5 mph winds..... By the following week we'll have a week long rain storm past threw. DANG.......we just threaded the needle on that one!! Big thanks to Jim Shepard who worked with me and my son Zac ALL DAY on the shop. Blending two homes has been very tough on the ol' shop....."stuff" everywhere.....still plenty to do for the Friday crew, though might be a bit windy and damp... But who knows, they keep tweaking the weather report....lol 48D

  27. Should I bother dragging up a 1953 Chrysler Firepower that I need to part with? Or is that something no one really is into or wants? I am trying to determine which extra parts that I have to bring up with me.

  32. It will not fall apart as the 70 year old original tends to do. I used peel and seal from Lowes to do mine. Did all that the photos show plus the roof for $75. My original firewall pad was in good shape so I put it back in place on top of the p&s so that it looks original but still has more sound and heat proofing.
