  1. Folks, Today a bunch of us in Southern California gathered for a little area get together in Irvine, CA. Thank you to Jeff B for hosting a place for us to meet. Here are some of the photos that I took whilst I was there. If you're reading this and you were there, please post your photos to the thread. I've posted SOME of the photos I took. Here are the rest of mine: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1_-l-0Ir-A1N0pvSWlrQWxlN1E MODERATOR: I was not sure if this was the right forum. Please feel free to move it if need be. Thanks, FG.

  2. We just had the best time. Spaced on the group shot because we were like a bunch of chatty school girls. Everyone was genuinely interested in getting to know each other. We'll definitely do it again. I'm thinkin should be on the West side of town so's guys out that way don't have so far to drive. Re the request for names w/faces

  3. My 2¢: the front engine + bell housing mount setup was done so that the flatheads could be mounted in multiple applications: trucks, forklifts, welders, generators, airport tugs, tractors, combines...they all had different transmissions, and all were archaic gearboxes by today's standards. Larger engine + transmission setups required support geometry to change to accommodate the greater mass generating power. As for the trucks, the gearbox cantilever load on the bellhousing was small enough that a trans.support was not required.

  4. Well done Tim. You're making good progress. I can see that delivery van is just getting in your way though - better shove it in a container and send it over here to me

  5. Making some more progress: 1. Broke the bed free using the bent bumper as leverage 2. With the separation complete, we removed the bumper 3. Pushed the bed up and eventually over. 4,5. more of the same. 6. My progress board.....keeping the peace inside my head...lol 48D

  6. Gents,I agree with both of you, however I like the idea of a separate thread so here it is. In the future, and there will be more events....I will try and keep them, together. I would like to remember all the names, and associate them with their board names....but my memory is crap. I know that Jeff (White Dodge), Givin (Woody), Tony (White Cranbrook), Oak, Derek (38 P?, red and black), and Bill (48 P15, Blue) were there. The kind gent with the green truck, his name escapes me. He gave us Dodge tshirts and it is his birthday today. I should remember them all but I am on a deficit of sleep this weekend...apologies. I was so excited about this event, meeting new people and the reliability of my car. I am just so glad that I dont feel alone in the MoPar Socal scene anymore amongst all the GM, Chevy and Ford crowds. FG.

  7. Hello all; It's real cold here now and I am getting bored. I need a winter engineering project. I was thinking about what it would take to get a reproduction fuel tank for our 48 - 53 Dodge trucks made. That might be an interesting winter project. That said, do any of you guys have an old worthless tank that I could use as a pattern? As long as all the dimensions are there, I don't care how many holes are in it. Let me know if you have one and what you would want for it, plus shipping to Fox Lake, IL. I would also be interested in your opinion on whether a repro tank should be metal or plastic. Also, my thinking is to go with the 5 hole sending unit mount rather than the stock locking ring type mount. What do you think? Maybe is is possible to somehow make an adapter so either could be used. If you have any technical data on the dimensions on the original locking ring sending unit mount and locking ring let me know (see attached). I can get the dimensions for the 5 hole mount off of a modern sending unit. OK, just looked for the JC Whiney universal sending unit pn 1JA 128525 and it is no longer there. This look similar to the one I installed: http://www.jcwhitney.com/equus-direct-fit-fuel-sending-unit/p3040431.jcwx?skuId=6875803&filterid=d51471y1948g2u0j1 Anyway, just a thought. and I am sure I wil be overwhelmed at the cost to try to do this, but it's a long winter and there is definitely a need for a repro tank. 9. If you have not yet acquired a service manual I suggest you get one. They are available from several sources in both disc and hard copy. I personally like the hard copy as it is easier to have the open book on the workbench for quick reference.

  11. These are what I used for my truck http://www.uapac.com/antique/headlights/headlight-bulbs/7-crystal-headlight-2.html , and they're a great option for those needing turn signal lights without changing the original sockets. Very easy conversion, and they do come without the led's too

  12. It's a choke pull-off device. Once the engine warms up it pulls the choke open.

  13. Hacked one together from the photos floating about. I think it goes like this: Upper left is Oak, Derek, Bill, Rod Fedora Gent on top middle (only one I got, sorry) Bottom row: Don, Derek, Gavin, Bill, Jeff, Me (my pony tail anyway), Oak, Tony Might have my Dons and Bills wrong. Let me know and I will correct for the other's benefit.

  14. I was going to take a group photo. Even said it out loud. Then got so into the stories and conversations that it completely left me. Here is the initial set of photos I took. No detail shots here. Please comment on any name updates and I will add to the album. Mike

  15. A big thanks to all of you who made it to our gathering this morning. I really enjoyed meeting all of you and hope we can do it again. What a great group! And a special thanks to Rod for the T-shirts and Bill for the doughnuts. Glad we were able to enjoy the morning together. Jeff and Don.....see I told you I don't have a good side.

  16. that carrier looks very similar to the one on my B-4; looking at the parts book, the '53 has a different part number than the '48-'52. I picked up one of each on eBay years ago, and they are roughly the same size, with the B-4 carrier being a few pounds lighter. If your spare tire fits onto the carrier you have, and it fits onto your truck, I say use it...if somebody has a problem with that, have a discussion with them in the parking lot--bring the carrier with ya

  17. I have a big pile of them as well from an old service department. The binder is like 6 inches thick! Scanning would take me a solid month! James.

  18. Attached is the document that talks about the changes in the main case of the M6. In particular there was a change of 1st and 3rd gear. Since the gears and the like are interchangeable, within respect of the plate vs. pin syncro's, one could change the ratio of 1st and or 3rd gear. I suspect that the guy that some years ago swapped his M6 in a flathead six used one from a "converter" car and just swapped the input shaft. Just as I did when I went to the 3-speed from an M6 in my big Desoto. Best, James.

  22. Now the clock movement with spacers, Then install the clock face, tighten the nut, and install the hands. (sorry no picture at this step) Then clean the glass and bezel and reassemble with new eyelets. I found that I had it so close to the glass that I couldn't use the closed ended nut for the hands. I had to use the open nut that would normally be used with a second hand, even though I didn't use a second hand. And install in the truck, stare, smile, and get ready to field questions like, "Is that an original option for the trucks?" I didn't cover the back of the clock movement and I can easily reach up behind the dash and replace the battery or set the clock as needed. I also didn't install the light socket for back lighting because I seem to have lost it. When I come across it I'll wire it up and install it. Then I'll find out how it looks all lit up at night.
