Floor shift concepts for Mopar column shift Transmssions

Howdy folks -

Coming from another blog topic, which strayed down a back road, came the idea of  transmissions for Mopar Cars and Trucks that were post 1940 that came with  Column shift and the normally column shift transmission was modified or the linkage was to turn it into a 3 speed floor shift transmission.

So this isn't about taking a vehicle that had column shift and putting a transmission for the 1930s or a modern floor shift transmission to make the vehicle floor shift. This is taking say a 1950s r10g1 overdrive and putting it into a 1930s car or a 1950s pickup and making it a floor shift.   It could also be taking a standard 3 speed column shift and making it into a floor shift in that same vehicle.

Its not a new concept by any stretch.  My Dad put an r10g1 overdrive from a 1952 Plymouth into a 1951 Fargo pickup truck which had been a 3 speed column shift pickup. He had taken a Fenton floor shifter kit that was a kit to move column shifts and made a bunch of changes to get it to work.  The truck is long gone but we actually recovered the shifter which had been cut off at some point by the person who got the pickup.   I will take some pictures at some point for the fun of it.  We got it moving again but it would be too expensive to try and duplicate.  George has also built a very simplified for racing which is super simple, although I am not sure would work for regular street usage, and he also has one his Uncle Harry Hein's made but duplicating it, is a project that hasn't quite made it to the top of the pile.

We also have several pictures of guys who have done them, although most are pretty heavily involved and some quite clunky looking.

All that being said, the reason I started this was -  Paul aka   

pflaming  had posted a picture of his project of making a traditional 3 speed floor shift Plymouth transmission, and turning it into a floor shift, which really was the impetus for this blog idea. 

"The shifter I fabbed from a photo, not my design. It is uncomplicated and will serve my purposes very well. The tranny and OD are not on the engine yet."

This one was made by  Ron Allworth    who made this one for a buddy's 1933 Plymouth that he was putting a 270  hemi in it 

For this one of course it would not work on an r10g1 overdrive, although that is not to say they couldn't make one for that purpose.

I just thought I would post it up as while a tad over engineered I thought it was very cool.

This one was a Fenton "universal" floor shift conversion kit, that then someone adapted it for their purposes which was in a early 50s van, similar to this one which likely will be the 1st time this is seen in public!  lol

I believe this is similar to what my Dad did in his pickup although since I never say it together on a transmission that is pure speculation.

If you have other floor shifter actually installed on Mopar 3 speed transmission that was previously a column shift, either already installed and happen to have pictures, or are working on one, or even have  ideas, feel free to post away !

These designs are way over designed and none for an R 10. I have fabricated one for my B3B, with R10 overdrive. It will be on display at Tims BBQ. Parts are at a machine shop now getting "professionalized.

The Way

This is a floor shifter George Asche made for me about 5 years ago. Up and down, forward and back. Works great! I use a piano pedal spring attached to the floor to automatically lift the shifter. I only have to push down for reverse and 1st.

Once it works for me, I will not likely make it available. I do not think I can patent it. It is quite uncomplicated, so easy to reproduce. I may be somewhat selfish, but I’m nottoointerested in giving away  what I spent weeks figuring it out.  Just saying, Will know more once I have in use on the road.

I have two floor shifters that I bought some time ago they are new in the box, one is an Ansen and the other a Drag Fast. The Drag Fast works in a strait line, push down and forward for first, then strait back for second and then strait ahead for third. My Dad used one on a 48 coup that he raced on the street in Seattle in the early 60's

Any chance you want to sell either one of them, I have another guy looking for one for me right now, I have a 1948 Dodge with the 3-speed manual fluid Drive coupler

hey there, Let me think about it, if I hang onto one them it will be the drag fast model. I bought them both from a guy that was advertising in the Inliner magazine so you may want to check there as well

If you don't want to sell them, could you please tell me what the model numbers are on them, so I have a better chance of searching for one,  I have another gentleman that says he has a few in a box somewhere in his garage , but I haven't heard back from him yet, I also tried to look up that inliner magazine but couldn't find it, thanks

If I recall. There was an Ansen, a Mr Gasket and Fox Craft that were available from independent retailers, via catalog and from Western Auto. Maybe Goodyear and

Firestone stores.

Yes there was several different companies that made them, they're very hard to find though especially if you look on eBay, no matter what you type in they come up with 10,000 different results, you can spend all day looking through all the ones they show you, that's why I would like to try and get part numbers from someone that has one

hello there, sorry for the delay I have been in the shop working on the 4dr. I drug out my two shifters and found that one of them the "Drag Fast" is for a Ford 3spd OD so that won't help you, but the Ansen is for Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth Kit # 9008. I bought this kit in 1998 from Darrell Slifka from State Center, IA. I haven't checked to see if Darrell was ever or is a member of this forum, so that may be a lead for you.

I found Inliner International on line, you may want to see what you can find there.

I will hang on to the Ansen as the other one I have is not for a Mopar but instead a Ford/Merc 3spd OD. I would like to find a coup and set it up like my Dad had his in the early 60's and that will require the Ansen.

The person who made that, made it as a 1 off and  didnt express any interest in making more. The one at the top of the thread was made by

pflaming - P15-D24.com and Pilot-house.com

 

and I cant tell you if he would have interest in helping you make the floor shift for what is normally a column shift tranny.

You can  also swap your tranny out, put in an Aluminum A833 4 speed which is floor shift and gives you overdrive .  Same blog just a different topic.
